Indoor or outdoor 50m cable reel: quote the cable code

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are choosing between a Brennenstuhl drum that prints H05VV-F and says indoor, and a bright yellow reel whose amazon.co.uk title says outdoor. An indoor or outdoor cable reel decision is about the harmonised cable code, any IP rating, and a manual sentence you can quote. Colour is not an IP rating. The nine reels in the [50m cable reel comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/50m-cable-reel) are the whole set. None prints H07RN-F or an IP code. The buying order is on the [50m cable reel buying guide](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/50m-cable-reel/sub/50m-cable-reel-buying-guide). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We did not test these reels in a lab.

H05VV-F is the indoor code on the Brennenstuhl drums

Harmonised flex marked H05VV-F is ordinary-duty PVC for dry indoor environments. Brennenstuhl’s UK cable note pairs VV plastic with indoor use and H07RN-F rubber with outdoor and site work. Four reels in this comparison print H05VV-F 3G1.5: the Brennenstuhl Standard, the older Garant, and the two newer Garant drums. The Standard and the older Garant also state indoor use in the bullets. The newer plastic and steel Garant bodies print the same code and stay silent on indoor or outdoor. Silence is not permission to leave them in the rain. A hot-dip galvanised steel frame changes durability, not the chemistry of the sheath. If the job is a dry garage, workshop, or indoor route you can keep off damp floors, these drums are the side of the argument with a code you can point at.

A yellow or green sheath is there to be seen

High-visibility yellow on the SLx, and green on Status, IONOS, Desiretech, and the Masterplug, helps you spot the lead on grass or in clutter. It does not appear in the harmonised mark. Five listings leave the cable code blank: Desiretech, Status, IONOS, SLx, and the Masterplug. A blank field means you cannot quote the sheath from the amazon card. Status and IONOS add outdoor in the title and weatherproof in a highlight, and still print no IP rating. Desiretech at least states indoor use, though it also claims no derating over 50 m. That is a marketing line, not a cable standard. The Masterplug bullets emphasise visibility and do not assert outdoor on amazon.co.uk. A trade-site row for the same model family that lists IP20 is not an outdoor rating you can merge into this listing.

Put the title next to the manual

The clearest clash in this set is the SLx 90071PI. The amazon title says outdoor. The user guide for that 30 m and 50 m family says domestic use only and do not use the reel in damp or wet conditions, and it prints 960 W fully wound and 3,120 W fully extended at 240 V. When the retail copy and the manual disagree, the manual is what you cite for damp and for load. Every listing in this comparison leaves the IP rating blank. IP20 means protection against fingers, not rain. IP44 is the usual garden conversation, and none of these nine listings prints it. An indoor-and-outdoor row on a third-party spec sheet next to IP20 is not the same as a drum marked IP44 on the box you hold.

When each side is the right buy

Choose the indoor Brennenstuhl side when the run stays in a dry building, you want H05VV-F on the label, and you accept three sockets on the Standard and most Garant models. The Standard at £69.99 is the cheaper coded drum. The older Garant adds self-closing covers at a higher price. Choose a high-visibility four-socket reel only when you can keep the sockets dry, unwind fully, stay inside the manual wattages, and you are not treating the title as an IP mark. The SLx has the largest review sample that describes a 50 m yellow reel. The Masterplug adds a switch and a manual reset. Neither gives you H07RN-F. Mower, dew, and RCD practice is on the 50m cable reel for the garden page. If you need rubber site cable or a printed IP44 reel, look outside this set, including the outdoor cable reel comparison.

Which sentence you can quote

Quote H05VV-F and the indoor line when the run stays dry, and take a Brennenstuhl drum that prints both. Quote the user guide, not the title, when you take the SLx, and keep it out of damp. If the only honest sentence is that no IP code and no H07RN-F are printed, do not leave any of these nine reels out all winter.

Common questions

Can I use an H05VV-F reel in the garden?
Only for a brief, dry job if you accept the limit on PVC flex, and not as permanent outdoor use on wet grass. Brennenstuhl treats VV cable as indoor material and H07RN-F as the outdoor and site cable. The Standard and the older Garant state indoor use, so those listings should stay indoors. A dry patio is not the same as leaving the drum out through winter.
Is a yellow or green cable outdoor rated?
No. It is there so you can see the lead. The rating comes from the cable code, an IP mark, and the manual limit. Five listings in this set leave the harmonised code blank, including the yellow SLx and the green Status, IONOS, Desiretech, and Masterplug reels. Colour does not fill that blank.
What IP rating do these 50 m reels have?
None is printed on the amazon.co.uk listings in this set. Do not infer IP44 from a yellow or green sheath, or from the word outdoor in a title. IP20, where a trade card prints it for a related model, means finger protection, not rain. It is not printed on these nine stored listings.
What is the difference between H05VV-F and H07RN-F?
H05VV-F is PVC flex for dry indoor use. H07RN-F is rubber cable for tougher outdoor and site conditions. Brennenstuhl’s UK note draws that split. This comparison has four reels that print H05VV-F 3G1.5 and none that print H07RN-F. A steel drum body does not change the sheath from PVC to rubber.
Why does the SLx title say outdoor if the guide says keep it dry?
The amazon.co.uk title says outdoor and names lawn mowers. The user guide for the 30 m and 50 m family says domestic use only and do not use the reel in damp or wet conditions, with 960 W wound and 3,120 W extended. When the title and the guide disagree, follow the guide for damp and for load.
Are the Brennenstuhl Garant drums outdoor reels because the body is steel?
No. The steel Garant still prints H05VV-F 3G1.5. The frame is more robust, and one listing calls the sheet steel rust-resistant. The sheath is still indoor PVC. The newer Garant drums also stay silent on indoor or outdoor, and silence is not an outdoor rating. No IP code is printed.
What should I buy if I need a reel that can live outside?
Not one of these nine as permanent outdoor kit. Look for a product that prints H07RN-F or IP44, or have fixed outdoor wiring installed. An indoor-and-outdoor line on a trade site next to IP20 is still IP20. None of these stored amazon.co.uk listings prints IP44.
