Empty cable reel buying guide: which drum or wheel

Updated: 23 October 2026

Amazon has returned a four-socket drum and a flat wheel in the same row. They share a shape and not a job. A socket drum is something you fit flex to. A tidy reel only stores a lead you already own, and it should be unplugged before you wind it. This empty cable reel buying guide decides the job, then the amp rating if you need sockets, then the cable you already have. Prices from £10.52 to £18.88 sit on the [empty cable reel comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/cable-reel-empty). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It is not a lab test.

Socket drum or tidy reel

Start with what you will plug in. A lawnmower, a work light, or a kettle needs sockets and a place to terminate flex. In this set that is the Pro Elec PEL00901 or the EnergyPro DL616B-BS, both around £18 to £19 before cable. A finished hook-up, lights, or a hose needs a wheel with no sockets. Buying the cheaper wheel, then finding nowhere to connect a plug, is the mistake this search produces. A tidy reel has no wound rating because it should not carry current while coiled. Hook-up storage is the caravan cable tidy reel page. Brennenstuhl 1130710 at £16.52 has a frame, and this amazon.co.uk page does not mention sockets.

Amps, sockets, and the cut-out

One BS 1363 socket is 13 A. Four sockets still share one flex and one fuse. UK mains are nominally 230 V. The plug you fit is a BS 1363 plug with a BS 1362 fuse. BS EN 61242 covers household cable reels, and that claim belongs on a live drum, not a tidy wheel. The EnergyPro prints a limit: 2,300 W unwound, which is 10 A at 230 V, and 1,150 W or 1,000 W coiled. Do not round 2,300 W up to 3,120 W. The Pro Elec amazon bullets do not print watts. A B&Q page for PEL00901 states 13 A and a safety cut-out. That is another shop. If the drum has no marked current, do not guess 13 A because it has four sockets. The plug fuse does not protect cable that is still wound. Electrical Safety First puts a typical wound figure at about 3 A or 4 A.

Length and conductor size

A 50 m title is a capacity claim for some thickness of cable. BEAMA’s checklist expects at least 1.25 mm² or 1.5 mm² once the lead is longer than 2 m. The EnergyPro bullets say H05VV-F 3G1.25 mm² up to 20 m, or 3G1.5 mm² up to 30 m. The Pro Elec title says 50 m. One UK review fitted 25 m of reused cable and would not trust 50 m of that cable. Another says the drum took 50 metres. Amazon Basics “up to 45 m” meets a review that doubts much more than 20 m of 12.5 mm hose. The Gatuida spool is 20 cm, with a 1 kg capacity and no metre figure.

When not to buy empty

An empty drum at £18 is not a finished lead. A rule of thumb from other UK shops, not a price in this capture, is that trade empty drums often sit around £17 to £25, while a loaded reel costs more because the cable is included. If you do not already have sound flex, or you cannot identify earth, buy the reel that arrives finished. That choice is the empty cable reel vs extension reel page. None of these listings prints an IP rating. An outdoor lead should come from a socket with RCD protection, and a taped or scorched sheath is not a donor. The sequence is on the how to wire an empty cable reel page.

Common questions

Do I need sockets or only a wheel?
You need sockets if you are building an extension from flex you will fit yourself. You need only a wheel if the lead already has its plugs and you are packing it away. A tidy reel cannot be turned into a 13 A extension.
Does 50 m mean 50 m of 2.5 mm²?
Not on the evidence in this set. The EnergyPro states 20 m of 1.25 mm² or 30 m of 1.5 mm². The Pro Elec title says 50 m without a conductor size, and one reviewer stopped at 25 m of the cable they owned.
What does a thermal cut-out change if the cable stays wound?
It may open before the insulation cooks. It does not raise the wound rating to the unwound rating. Electrical Safety First puts a typical wound figure at about 3 A or 4 A. Unwind to use the higher mark, and let the drum cool before you reset. The plug fuse does not protect cable that is still on the reel.
Is a 10 A empty reel enough for a lawnmower?
Often yes, if the mower’s plate is under 2,300 W and you unwind the drum. The EnergyPro’s unwound figure is 2,300 W. It is not a 13 A reel because it has four sockets. Read the plate on the tool before you match it to 10 A.
When is a ready-made reel the simpler buy?
When you do not already own sound flex, when the empty drum’s amazon page omits the watt rating, or when you are not confident terminating a plug. The shelf price of an empty drum is not the price of a finished lead. Compare that full cost on the versus page before you order cable.
