How to wire an empty cable reel on a UK socket drum

Updated: 23 October 2026

You want to know how to wire an empty cable reel without inventing a rating the listing never printed. Confirm the sockets, match the flex, fit a BS 1363 plug only if you can identify earth, then unwind before the first load. The two socket drums are in our [empty cable reel comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/cable-reel-empty). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. If you cannot name earth, stop. It is not a lab procedure.

Check you have a socket drum

A tidy reel is the wrong object. The storage reels in this set have no sockets and no thermal cut-out. Winding a finished lead onto them is storage. Connecting flex into them is not a wiring job this page will describe. The two drums you can consider are the Pro Elec PEL00901, about £18.19, and the EnergyPro DL616B-BS. The Pro Elec amazon bullets do not print watts. A review mentions a safety switch. If you cannot see a cut-out, you do not yet have a rating to obey. The EnergyPro asks for H05VV-F 3G1.25 mm² up to 20 m, or 3G1.5 mm² up to 30 m, states 2,300 W unwound, and claims BS EN 61242. Trust those bullets, not the 45.4 g weight field. Why five reviews do not make it the top pick is on the best empty cable reel page.

Flex, length, and the plug

BEAMA’s checklist expects a BS 1363 plug, a BS 1362 fuse, and flex of at least 1.25 mm² or 1.5 mm² once the lead is longer than 2 m. These listings do not print an IP rating. Feed an outdoor lead from a socket with RCD protection. Which drum to buy is on the empty cable reel buying guide. On the EnergyPro, stop at 20 m of 1.25 mm² or 30 m of 1.5 mm². A longer offcut is not acceptable because the Pro Elec title says 50 m. If the sheath is nicked, taped, or pulled out of a grip, it is scrap. Brown is live, blue is neutral, and green-and-yellow is earth. The sheath must sit in the cord grip. If you cannot name earth, stop. Do not swap colours to make a foreign lead fit. If a safety-switch wire and a core will not sit cleanly, stop.

Unwind before you load it

A reel that is still wound does not get the unwound rating. Electrical Safety First says the wound figure is often only 3 A or 4 A, and that a reel with no thermal cut-out should not be used. The plug fuse does not protect the turns still on the reel. On the EnergyPro the coiled marks are 1,000 W or 1,150 W, against 2,300 W unwound. Four sockets do not multiply the limit. If a cut-out trips, unplug, leave the cable out, and let the drum cool before you reset. The Pro Elec page does not print a wound watt figure. Do not borrow 960 W or 3,120 W from a loaded reel. If you cannot see a cut-out, do not use it as an extension.

When to hand it to a competent person

Stop if you are not sure of live, neutral, and earth. Stop if the sheath is taped or scorched, if the Pro Elec terminals look too crowded for a safety-switch wire and a core, or if an outdoor lead will run from a socket with no RCD. A competent person, or a ready-made reel, is the cheaper outcome. A finished lead already has a plug and a marked wound rating. If the drum is described as indoor, do not park it on wet grass because the sockets fit a BS 1363 plug. The empty cable reel vs extension reel page is the buy-or-build choice. A tidy reel still does not get wired.

Common questions

Which core goes to earth?
Green-and-yellow goes to earth, brown to live, and blue to neutral, in a standard UK plug. That is the usual core colour code, not a reading taken from the Pro Elec or EnergyPro terminals. If you cannot see which is which, or the flex is an older colour set you do not recognise, stop and do not guess.
What flex length can I put on the EnergyPro drum?
The bullets say H05VV-F 3G1.25 mm² up to 20 m, or 3G1.5 mm² up to 30 m. Cable is not in the box. A longer piece, or a thicker piece than those two recipes, is outside what that listing states.
What do I do if the cut-out trips?
Unplug the load, leave the cable fully run out, and let the drum cool before you reset. Do not reset while the cable is still coiled, and do not add a second reel to spread the load. A trip means the reel was too warm or too heavily loaded for the way you were using it.
Is PVC flex acceptable on a patio?
H05VV-F is ordinary appliance flex. It is what the EnergyPro names for its lengths. It is not, by itself, a wet-grass lead. If the drum has no outdoor rating and the socket has no RCD, keep the setup indoors or buy a lead specified for outside.
Does a tidy reel get wired at all?
No. The storage reels in this comparison have no sockets and no thermal cut-out. You wind a lead that is already finished, and you do it after the lead is unplugged. Wiring cores into a tidy reel is the wrong job.
