Surface mounted socket buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You may need a socket on blockwork, beside surface trunking, or on a wall you do not want to chase. A surface-mounted fitting puts the enclosure on the face of the wall, but search results mix complete sets, faceplates and outdoor sockets. This surface mounted socket buying guide puts the decisions in order: confirm the box, choose the outlet count and depth, then check material, switching and the UK standard claim. Our [surface mounted socket comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/surface-mounted-socket) shows the retained amazon.co.uk listings and captured prices. Start with the installation rather than the colour, because a finish cannot compensate for the wrong enclosure.

What counts as a surface-mounted socket

A complete surface fitting is a UK socket face and a pattress or metal-clad box fixed onto the wall. A flush faceplate may use familiar fixing centres, but it still needs a recessed box. For a no-chase installation, look for wording such as surface box, pattress, metal clad or back box supplied. Listings are not always consistent. The CED 1-gang title says a 25 mm box is included, yet its included-components field names only the socket. The SHPELEC grey metal-clad listing also names only the socket in that field, while reviews describe a box. The black EVOGES set lists the socket, steel back box and fixing screws. None of the metal-clad singles states IP66. The five-pack SHPELEC set says IP20.

Gangs, depth and the switch

Choose one gang when one plug position is enough. Choose two when two appliances share the point. The CED is the only 1-gang option here. Adding outlets does not increase the circuit’s capacity. A 25 mm pattress is a common minimum and keeps the projection modest. The screwless SHPELEC five-pack uses one, and two reviews say the face did not fit or clip to the box. Switched means a local rocker. Double pole means the switch is intended to disconnect live and neutral. Only the Knightsbridge MR9000 and EVOGES listings expressly claim double-pole switching. For the enclosure trade-off, see surface mounted socket for a garage.

Plastic pattress or steel box

White plastic pattresses suit dry domestic positions where the socket is unlikely to be struck. The SHP white double was captured at £6, the CED white single at £7.28. Reviews include a SHP box breaking around its cable entries. Flameport warns that drilling a plastic pattress can shatter it. Metal-clad sockets suit dry utility spaces where tools or stored items can knock the fitting. Steel is tougher, but the box must be earthed and it does not add circuit protection. A plastic double can be the low-cost choice in a dry cupboard. Steel earns its weight on garage blockwork. If the wall is damp or exposed to rain, neither is the answer. Whether any projecting box is appropriate is covered in surface socket or flush socket.

What to read on the listing

For a UK 13 A socket, an explicit BS 1363 claim is stronger evidence than a vague reference to BSEN, CE or RoHS. The SHPELEC screwless five-pack, the SHPELEC grey metal clad, the EVOGES black metal clad and the Knightsbridge MR9000 state BS 1363. The CED listing mentions several marks but does not print BS 1363 in the captured data. The NANDEYIBI title describes a 13 A double with pattress, but an attribute says Type B and NEMA 5-15. Its £5.98 price and 3,811 reviews do not resolve that. Price comes last. Singles in the captured set ran from £5.98 to £11.99, and multi-packs cost £28.99 for two and £54.99 for five. Compare the cost per complete position only after the box, the screws and the switching are confirmed.

Common questions

Does a surface socket always include the back box?
No. Some listings sell a complete set, while others describe a surface accessory but leave the components unclear. Check both the title and the included-components field, and ask the seller when they disagree. A product image is not reliable proof that the pattress and screws are in the carton.
Is 25 mm deep enough for a double socket?
It is a common minimum for a plain 13 A socket, but the mechanism, cable size and number of conductors determine how comfortable the fit will be. A deeper box gives more termination room. Screwless, USB or crowded connections can make 25 mm inconvenient even when the face nominally fits.
Is metal clad waterproof?
No. Metal clad describes the enclosure material, not weather protection. The MR9000 manufacturer sheet states IP20, and the other metal products here do not state a weatherproof rating. Use an appropriately IP-rated outdoor accessory where water or condensation is a realistic exposure.
What does double pole mean?
A double-pole socket switch disconnects both live and neutral when operated. That is different from simply having a rocker switch. Only rely on it where the exact product description or datasheet states DP or double pole. Do not infer it from appearance.
Is IP20 suitable outdoors?
No. IP20 does not provide water protection. It is evidence for a dry indoor boundary, not for an exposed wall, a damp outbuilding, or a location where splashing and condensation may occur.
Should I choose one gang or two?
Choose one gang for a single appliance and a narrow position, and two for everyday flexibility. The circuit and the installation still govern the permitted load. Two outlets do not mean that the circuit can safely supply twice the current.
