USB plug adapter vs USB wall socket

Updated: October 2026

The bedside socket is full, or you want USB in the wall, and you are choosing between a plug you can remove and a faceplate someone has to fit. A USB plug adapter in our [USB plug adapter comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/usb-plug-adapter) is a plug-in. A USB wall socket is wiring. None of the twelve rows is a fixed socket, so this page will not put a faceplate in the basket. The Products Compared editorial team wrote it on 16 October 2026 from those amazon.co.uk listings and from public UK guidance. There is no wiring guide and no lab test. Three ways to get USB at the wall

A charger plug replaces the outlet with USB until you remove it. The Aioneus 40 W at £9.99 is that shape: Type G, four ports, up to 40 W total, and no 13 A hole left behind. A plug-through keeps mains outlets and adds USB, so a lamp can stay. A fixed USB faceplate replaces the socket itself. Shop videos show that swap as a short job. They are describing a change to the installation. The sorting question is whether the wall may be changed. In a rented room the answer is usually no, and a plug-in leaves with you. If you own the place and want USB in the wall for years, a faceplate can keep both 13 A outlets after someone competent fits it. Plug-in shapes stay on the USB plug adapter buying guide.

When the plug-in is the right object

Keep the plug-in when you must take it away, when the tenancy forbids alterations, or when you are only testing whether USB at that bedside is useful. If the 13 A outlets have to stay, the LENCENT at £11.89 is the plug-through whose attribute line says Type G. It keeps two AC outlets stated at 13 A and adds USB at 3.4 A total. The 3,250 W figure is the mains side. There is no IP rating and no surge figure. The toomke at £13.29 claims one AC socket, and the attribute says Type B. The UK sample includes heat and one report of sparking, a pop and a blown fuse. That row is not the rental recommendation. Living with shared watts is on how to use a USB plug adapter.

When a faceplate is a different job

A USB faceplate is not in this folder. Buying one means changing the socket on the circuit. Electrical Safety First explains Part P and notes that the April 2013 update reduced the range of notifiable work. That sentence is not permission to copy an installation video, and this page will not give terminal colours or back-box depths. If the room is a bathroom, the circuit is new, or you are unsure the wiring can take the faceplate, use a competent person. Stop before any plug-in as well if the socket is already cracked, warm or sparking, or the consumer unit will not reset. Renters who cannot alter the wall stay with a plug-in they can remove.

What neither choice proves

A faceplate does not give every port 40 W, and a plug-in does not become safe because it has thousands of stars. On the Aioneus 40 W the 40 W claim is a total, printed at 5 V and 3.1 A. On the LENCENT the USB budget is 3.4 A total, separate from the 3,250 W AC side. No row states an IP rating. The Office for Product Safety and Standards has rejected plug-in USB chargers for a missing fuse and for pins under 9.5 mm from the edge. Those reports are not a test of a named faceplate, and they are not a failure rate for these brands. A CE bullet is a claim, and none of the twelve files prints BS 1363. Use a plug-in when you must take it away. Treat a USB faceplate as wiring.

Common questions

Is a USB wall socket the same as a USB plug adapter?
A USB plug adapter in this set pushes into an existing socket and comes out again. A USB wall socket is a faceplate fitted in its place. The twelve amazon.co.uk rows here are plug-ins, including the LENCENT plug-through at £11.89. A faceplate is a different product and a different kind of work.
Can I fit one if I rent?
If the tenancy does not allow you to alter the installation, stay with a plug-in you can remove. A charger plug or a Type G plug-through such as the LENCENT leaves with you. Fitting a faceplate changes the socket. That is a conversation with the landlord and, where you are unsure, with a competent person.
Will a USB faceplate leave the 13 A outlets free?
A combined faceplate is meant to keep mains outlets and add USB in the wall, which a charger plug cannot do because it occupies the socket. This folder does not sell that faceplate and does not state a wattage for one. If you only need the holes for a few months, the LENCENT is the reversible version in this set.
Do I need an electrician?
Use a competent person for a bathroom, a new circuit, a socket that is already warm or damaged, or a consumer unit that will not reset. Part P narrowed notifiable work in April 2013, and that fact is not a guide to swapping a faceplate yourself. This page does not describe how to wire a socket.
Is a bathroom socket a plug-in job?
Not with these products. No row states an IP rating. A toomke bullet that mentions a bathroom does not create one. Bathroom electrical work is a competent person’s job, whether you were considering a plug-in or a faceplate.
