Smart extension lead for home office: keep the PC off

Updated: 23 October 2026

The wall socket is behind the desk, the TV unit leaves no room for your hands, and you want schedules for lamps without crawling every evening. A smart extension lead for a home office is that unreachable strip: monitors, speakers, and chargers you can stand to lose for a minute, not a PC you would rather shut down cleanly. This page stays on one room. The table is the [smart extension lead comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/smart-extension-lead). What you are trying to reach

Measure the cable route before you trust a blank length cell. Along the skirting and up the desk leg is often more than a short 1.5 m sounds. Only Meross MSS425F and HBN state 1.8 m on the kept amazon row. TP-Link’s UK page states 1.5 m for the Tapo P304M, but the amazon cell is blank, so that length is not an Amazon table fact. If the plug will not reach, daisy-chaining is the wrong fix. Electrical Safety First advises against chaining extensions. A longer single lead, or a new socket from a registered electrician, is the safe path. Tapo prints IP00.

What a schedule may turn off

Schedules suit a lamp, a soundbar, and chargers you can lose for a minute. A desktop PC should not sit on that schedule. A power cut on a strip is not a shutdown. Meross HomeKit six-socket reviews describe random power cycles that restart PCs and TVs. Put the tower on a wall socket you do not schedule. Meross and Tapo print 13 A / 3,250 W. HBN prints 3,120 W. A fan heater under the desk is the load that uses that budget. Full arithmetic is on the smart extension lead buying guide.

Buttons, USB, and the router

Meross reviewers often find one master button that kills every socket and the USB bank together. That is awkward when you meant to kill only a lamp. Tapo’s P304M material describes a button per socket. USB, where listed, still switches as one group, and HBN’s table does not list USB. Do not put the router on a switched socket of the same strip. If the strip drops, you lose the Wi-Fi the app needs. HBN’s 600 J is the only joule figure in this set.

Which kept listing fits this room

Stated 1.8 m and Apple Home on four sockets: Meross MSS425F at £34.99. Six sockets: HomeKit MSS426 B08MJP8ZQF, or B09CH3WCDX if the bullet says HomeKit is not supported. Laptop USB-C: MSP843 at £49.99, and check the Type B plug cell. Per-socket buttons and watts in the Tapo app: P304M at £29.99. Smart Life with a stated 1.8 m and 600 J: HBN at £28.99, on 24 reviews. Common questions

Can I put my PC on a smart extension lead?
You can physically plug it in. For a desktop you care about, use a wall socket you do not schedule. A power cut on a strip is not a shutdown. Meross HomeKit six-socket reviews describe random power cycles that restart PCs, TVs, and soundbars. Keep the strip for lamps, monitors, speakers, and chargers you can lose for a minute.
How long a cable do I need under a desk?
Only MSS425F and HBN state 1.8 m on the kept amazon rows. Measure the real route around furniture, from the wall socket along the skirting and up the desk leg. Do not daisy-chain to invent length. Electrical Safety First advises against chaining extensions.
Which strip has USB-C for a laptop?
Only the Meross MSP843 claims 65 W across two USB-C and one USB-A as one group, at £49.99 with 4.0 from 90 reviews. The three USB ports still switch together. The other USB rows are USB-A at about 20 W total. HBN’s table does not list USB.
Should the router sit on a switched socket?
No. If the strip cuts power, you can lose the Wi-Fi the strip itself needs, and the app path that would turn it back on goes with it. Keep the router on a live wall outlet, not on a scheduled socket of the same lead.
What if the lead smells hot under the desk?
Unplug it. Check whether a heater or another high load shared the 13 A feed. Meross and Tapo print 13 A / 3,250 W for the strip, and HBN prints 3,120 W. Scorch marks or a hot-plastic smell are stop conditions, not an app setting.
Is the Tapo long enough for a TV unit?
The amazon length cell is blank. The maker page states 1.5 m, which is not an amazon table fact. Measure before you assume it reaches. For six crowded sockets, look at the MSS426 twins instead, and read the HomeKit sentence on the bullet before you buy.
Do I need Matter for a home office?
Only if you already want Matter. A HomeKit Meross or a Smart Life HBN can serve a desk equally well once the PC stays off the switched sockets. Choose the control system for the household you already have, not because the room is an office.
