Open cable reel vs cassette: length and the rewind

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are choosing between a 10 m case that will sit on a shelf and a 25 m open frame that looks like more work to store. An open cable reel vs cassette decision is about length and rewind, not about which shape is safer. Both formats, on a UK house plug, still stop at 13 A, and both still have to come off the drum for a heavy load. The Products Compared editorial team compared the formats in this set on 19 October 2026. What you are actually choosing

A cassette hides the cable in a closed shell. An open reel leaves the drum visible on a frame. In this set the cassettes are both 10 m. The Masterplug at about £15.01 is marked 10 A. The Pro-XT at about £16.69 is marked 13 A and adds a switch and an LED. The open reels run from 15 m out to the indoor 50 m Brennenstuhl. A cassette stores neatly, and an open reel is the practical shape for a longer cable. Choosing 10 A or 13 A is the cable reel buying guide. The VonLux case uses a 16 A camping inlet, so it is not the tidy answer for a house socket.

Rewind, tangles and storage

Storage is where the cassette looks better, and rewind is where the reviews complain. On the 10 A Masterplug the rear grip is not a proper handle, so winding is fiddly and the cable tangles if you wind too quickly. The Pro-XT has the same note: there is no bar to grasp. The open 25 m Masterplug is the reply from people who had an older cassette. They call this frame sturdier and easier to wind, because a turn that climbs off the drum is visible. A knot inside a shell stays hidden until the handle locks. On the SLx 30 m frame, cable can fall off the drum onto the tubes. Seeing the cable is not an IP rating.

When the cassette is the better reel

Choose a cassette when the lead is about 10 m and you will store it often: a flat, a van, or a garage cupboard. If the load might be a kettle, a heater, or a power tool, take the Pro-XT at about £16.69, not the £15.01 10 A cassette. It is 4.6 from 2,696 reviews, marked 13 A, with a switch and an LED. Do not buy the cheaper cassette just because the case looks the same. Saving £1.68 matters only inside 10 A. Neither cassette is a 25 m shell, and 320 g is not a credible weight for 10 m of cable. Prices against the 25 m reel are on the best cable reel page.

When the open reel is the better reel

Choose the open reel when the lead is about 25 m, or when you rewind often and want to see the turns. The Masterplug 25 m open reel is about £24.00, rated 4.7 from 4,909 reviews, marked 13 A, with a thermal cut-out, a steel frame and a BS EN 61242 claim. It takes more space than a 10 m case, at 3.42 kg, and no IP rating is stated. The SLx 30 m frame, about £44.99, is for a route longer than 25 m. Trust the 13 A UK plug in the bullets if the Amazon table says a type B plug and 36 W. For about 10 m, kept dry, take the 13 A Pro-XT. For about 25 m, take the open Masterplug and accept the bulk.

Common questions

Which is easier to rewind?
For a long lead, the open reel. Reviewers who moved from an old cassette to the Masterplug 25 m frame call it easier, because you can see the turns. The 10 m Pro-XT stores well, and the grip is the complaint: there is no bar to hold while you reel in. A 30 m open SLx can still throw cable onto the frame if you rush. Ease follows length, then how you wind.
Which is better in a van or a small garage?
The 10 m cassette, if 10 m is enough. It occupies a shelf instead of a frame. The Pro-XT at about £16.69 is the 13 A version to choose. The open 25 m Masterplug is 3.42 kg on a steel frame, which is the wrong shape when the van is full and the job is short. Do not keep a 25 m drum just in case if the spare will stay coiled.
Can a cassette hold 25 m without trouble?
Not in this set. The two Masterplug cassettes are 10 m. A long lead in a small shell is the tangle those reviews already describe when the rewind is rushed. The 25 m and 30 m listings here are open frames for that reason. If you need 25 m, buy the open reel.
Is an open reel safer because you can see the cable?
You can see a tangle, which helps the rewind. You cannot see a weather rating that was never printed. The open Masterplug and the open SLx reels do not state an IP code. Both formats need a thermal cut-out and a full unwind under a heavy load. Visible cable does not raise the 13 A ceiling, and it does not replace an RCD outdoors.
Which should I buy if I only need 10 m?
The Pro-XT cassette, at about £16.69, marked 13 A, unless every load stays inside 10 A. In that case the £15.01 cassette matches the lower limit. An open 25 m reel is surplus for a 10 m job, and the surplus left on the drum is the part that overheats. Four sockets on the cassette do not add amps.
