Common questions about door and window security

What does this hub compare?

Locks, cylinders, padlocks, bolts, chains, viewers, hinges, closers, window handles, window film, fly screens and sliding-door track kits, all from amazon.co.uk listings. There are forty comparisons. Peter F. checked the listings against public UK sources in October 2026. Products Compared did not run a lab test, and a printed security grade is used only when the listing states it.

Is a padlock on these pages a graded lock?

Not from the wording on these shelves. The ordinary padlock comparison has twelve open-shackle listings, and none states a BS EN 12320 grade or a Sold Secure mark. Keyed alike, on its own page, means one key for the locks in that pack. ABUS security level 5 on the 64TI/40 is the maker’s 1-to-10 scale, not CEN grade 5. A closed shackle for a shed, in police advice, is a different purchase.

Will a bathroom bolt let someone in from the landing?

Not the slide bolts and the QWORK rotate bolt in the room door lock comparison. They fasten from the inside and do not list a coin slot. A UK bathroom pattern is a thumbturn inside and an emergency release outside. A stick-on lever lock slows a toddler on a handle. It does not open a bolt the child has already slid, and it is not a stair gate.

Is the Yale MK3 a 2-star security handle?

The MK3 listing and Yale’s MK3 page do not say TS 007. The three handles in that comparison print no star. DHF describes two routes to three stars: a Kitemarked 3-star cylinder on its own, or a Kitemarked 1-star cylinder with Kitemarked 2-star furniture. Yale’s Platinum is the handle that states the 2-star mark, and it is not in this set. A security adjective on the title does not award the star.

Does security window film lock the window?

No. It is a film you apply to the glass. The top pick is the BDF S4MC 4 mil roll at about £66.51, and the best value is the Shackcom 4 mil roll at about £13.99. Thickness is a film choice, not a lock. A locking window handle is the separate comparison for a handle that also secures the sash.

What is a sliding door in this hub?

A track kit you hang a door on. Eight amazon.co.uk kits run from about £28.99 to about £59.99. The top pick is the WINSOON 183 cm big-wheel kit, and the best value is the WOLFBIRD 183 cm black kit. It is not a uPVC patio door, and it is not a fly screen. The fly screen page is mesh for an opening you already have.

Why do some comparisons have no best value?

A second badge is used only when the comparison awards one. The Burg-Wächter door lock and the Burg-Wächter padlock are single listings. The Yale 77 nightlatch is also the lowest price in the door lock set, so it stays the top pick only. The Hoppe Arrone code lock is both the top score and the lower price. The grating security chain page has a top pick and no best value, because none of the light sets states a security grade.

Can I fit these products on a fire door?

Only if the doorset allows it. A fire door has to close fully into the frame. A bolt, a film, a routed keep or a new mortice can sit outside that evidence. The pages say so where the listing is an ordinary bolt or a closer. If you are not sure the door is a plain internal door, leave the drill and ask a joiner or the managing agent.
