Window film on double glazing is a glass decision first

Updated: October 2026

You have a hot south-facing sealed unit and a silver roll in the basket. Dark mirror film on ordinary UK double glazing is a poor fit, and on a large sunny unit you cannot name, do not fit it. Window film on double glazing is a glass decision first. Daytime privacy is on [one-way window film privacy](/hub/door-and-window-security/window-solar-film/sub/window-solar-film-one-way-privacy). The rolls stay on the [window solar film comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/window-solar-film). This page is from the Products Compared editorial team, using Pilkington, UK supplier notes, and listings dated 15 October 2026. No thermal test was run, and no absorption percentage here is a pass mark.

Whether this pane should be filmed

Thermal stress, in Pilkington’s account, is a hot centre and a cooler edge held in the frame. Annealed glass can crack along that difference. Toughened glass is not prone to that particular crack. A dark interior mirror film absorbs more sun than clear glass, so the centre runs hotter while the edge, shaded by the bead, stays cooler. Dark film on the room side of standard non-toughened double glazing is a poor fit. Purlfrost treats that combination as unsuitable for their trade film, which is not a datasheet for these rolls. The Window Film Company does not take responsibility when the risk factors apply. Zindoo’s listing refuses long sun on double glazing, and that warning does not clear another brand. A UK review on the adhesive rabbitgoo rolls says the filmed pane gets very hot. If you cannot name the glass, leave the film in the basket.

Read the stamp, then stop if you cannot

Look in the corner for a permanent mark. BS EN 12150 is thermally toughened soda lime silicate glass. BS EN 14179 is the mark where that toughened glass was heat-soak tested. BS EN 14449 covers laminated glass. A stamp on the outer pane does not describe the inner pane, and a stamp is not a film-compatibility certificate. Older units often have no stamp. Absence does not prove annealed glass, and it does not prove toughened glass. If the FENSA paperwork does not name the pane, you still cannot name it. On a large sunny sealed unit, do not fit this dark film. A damaged edge, a tight blind, or a vent on the glass remains a crack risk even on toughened glass.

Partial cover, shade, and triple glazing

Do not cover only part of a sealed unit. A 44.5 cm strip on a wider pane, or Zindoo’s 40 cm roll used as a band, heats the filmed part and leaves the rest cooler. The Window Film Company tells buyers not to part-film a window, apart from a frosted film that is not these rolls. Check width on the window solar film buying guide only after this page says the pane is a candidate. A tree shadow, blinds hard against the glass, or a vent adds the same uneven heat. Do not film glass that is already cracked. Triple glazing, low-E, and tinted units need a named spec these rolls do not provide. Domed skylights are in the same refusal.

When a professional takes over

Ask a glazier before you buy for a roof, overhead glass, a listed front, or a lease that restricts alterations. The Window Film Company asks to be consulted above about 3 m², a side longer than 4.5 m, or untoughened glass thicker than 10 mm. If you can name toughened double glazing in good condition and cover the whole unit, fitting can start on how to apply window solar film. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Common questions

Can I put silver mirror film on the inside of ordinary UK double glazing?
Not if the unit is standard non-toughened glass, and not if you cannot name it on a large sunny pane. Dark interior film heats the centre while the edge stays cooler, which is the thermal-stress crack Pilkington describes for annealed glass. Zindoo’s listing already refuses long sun on double glazing, and that warning does not clear another brand on the same window.
How do I tell if the pane is toughened?
Look for a permanent corner mark. BS EN 12150 means thermally toughened glass, and BS EN 14179 means that glass was heat-soak tested. Laminated glass is marked under BS EN 14449. A stamp on one pane does not describe the other pane in the unit. If there is no mark and no paperwork, you have not identified the glass.
Does a BS EN 12150 stamp mean the film cannot crack the glass?
No. Toughened glass is not prone to the hot-centre crack Pilkington describes, and some trade tables recommend their own dark mirror film on toughened double glazing in good condition. A stamp is not a film certificate. Edge damage, partial shade, tight blinds, and a vent on the glass remain crack risks.
What happens if I cover only part of a sealed unit with a narrow roll?
You heat one part of the pane and leave the rest bare, which suppliers tell you to avoid, apart from some frosted films that are not these rolls. A 40 cm or 44.5 cm strip on a wider unit is that mistake. A second strip butted against it is still uneven cover. These rolls are 40–90 cm wide, not the 1.52 m width of trade film.
When should I stop and ask a glazier instead of buying a roll?
Stop for a roof window, a conservatory roof, a domed skylight, a listed front, a restrictive lease, or a warranty and a g-value you want kept. Stop if the pane is over about 3 m² or longer than about 4.5 m on a side, using the Window Film Company’s handover, or if you cannot name the glass. A missing FENSA certificate on a sunny unit is the same stop.
