Mini door closer buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are about to buy a small closer for a bedroom door, a gate or a screen, and the first number on the page is a star rating. A mini door closer buying guide reverses that. Name the door, then the mechanism, then the stated mass, and only then the reviews. A 5.0 from two amazon.co.uk reviews is not a size. On 19 October 2026 this set ran from about £7.59 to about £49.90. Each listing is on the [mini door closer comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/mini-door-closer). Peter F. used those listings and public UK notes. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. If the leaf is a fire door or a flat entrance, stop and use the [mini door closer fire door](/hub/door-and-window-security/mini-door-closer/sub/mini-door-closer-fire-door) page.

Start with the door, not the stars

A light internal door, a garden gate, a screen and a fire door do not share a closer. A bedroom door in a single house is usually timber you can screw into. A gate is often heavier and outside. A screen wants something that meters the last part of the swing. Approved Document B’s FAQ says closers are no longer required inside a single dwellinghouse, though an HMO can still need them. A flat entrance is not that exemption. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own rules. Stars come last. Kaaeiccr is 5.0 from two reviews at about £7.59 and states no door mass. HBL' is 5.0 from three reviews at about £23.99. Neither tells you whether a 25 kg bedroom door will latch. DODUOS is 3.7 from 521 reviews, and that large sample is mostly pads that peel. Named listings in that order are on the best mini door closer page.

Five mechanisms, and what each can and cannot do

A surface spring stores energy and lets it go. The best value, PCKOBEVER at about £8.59, states 20–30 kg and is 4.4 from 225 reviews. It failed a corrugated door at maximum, and one cylinder was too big for the frame. Vurlexat at about £12.99 states 20–50 kg and shows up on gates. One spring came loose on a 50 kg door at the top hole, so that ceiling is not spare capacity. A spring that does not check the close sits outside BS EN 1154. A concealed chain sits in the door edge. ZAVIA at about £9.99 states up to 50 kg and a 22 mm hole, and says the job is not DIY friendly. There are two reviews, one a short shipment. An adhesive cable is a no-drill trial. DODUOS at about £7.99 states 1000 g tensile strength, which is not the weight of the leaf, and there is no force valve. A pneumatic tube meters air. YUOIP at about £9.80 still bangs at the latch. CASONNIK at about £13.99 is 4.1 from 383 reviews and also draws early weld failures. A compact hydraulic body uses oil. The top pick, Napoleon N-1000 at about £49.90, is stated as size 3 for 20–60 kg and is the only listing here that names BS EN 1154. That line is not a certificate. The price gap against the spring is the two valves, the template and the named standard. If the only question is slam versus latch, use the spring versus pneumatic mini door closer page.

Mass, width and the BS EN 1154 size table

A marketing kilogram is not a power size. Firesafe’s explanation of BS EN 1154 treats size 3 as a 60 kg test door and a recommended width of 950 mm. Sizes 1 and 2 are not treated as fire-door closers. If width and mass fall in different sizes, take the larger. We did not run that test. No listing here prints the six-digit code. Kaaeiccr states no door mass, and the title says spring while the included line says hydraulic. DODUOS’s 1000 g claim is tensile strength. PCKOBEVER’s 20–30 kg can suit a light timber door and will not suit a leaf that belongs in size 3. Napoleon states 20–60 kg and calls itself size 3. HBL' states up to 65 kg and names ADA and UL, which are United States marks, not BS EN 1154 or UKCA. An 835 mm leaf can sit inside a size 3 width and still fail to latch, which one Napoleon reviewer reported.

Fixings, handing and opening force

A screw-in spring needs solid timber. Two of four screw heads snapped on one PCKOBEVER install, and paint in the thread stopped the adjuster seating. CASONNIK’s screws are described as JIS, so a Phillips bit can cam out. Vurlexat says a 180 degree turn covers left and right. YUOIP says a one-way opening. Napoleon says left or right without modification. If the page is silent, you discover the hand at the frame. DODUOS reviews describe a pull that is too much for a fly-screen or someone with a walking stick, and there is no valve. Napoleon reviewers say younger children struggle to push the door. Set the lightest tension that still latches. If the door has strips, a fire sign or a flat-entrance label, do not start drilling.

Common questions

What should you check before you buy a mini door closer?
Check whether the door is a fire door or a flat entrance, then the mechanism, then the stated mass and width. Stars come after that. In this set a 5.0 from two or three reviews is not a reason to buy, and a fire door phrase in a title is not a BS EN 1154 code. If you cannot name the leaf, you are not ready to compare prices.
Is a spring closer the same as a controlled closer?
A controlled closer checks the speed of the close. The GAI guide to BS EN 1154 puts spring hinges that do not check outside that standard. A surface spring in this set can return a light door. It does not become a controlled fire-door closer because the listing says automatic.
What does a stated 50 kg actually mean?
It is the seller’s mass line, not a BS EN 1154 power size. Size 3 in the Firesafe summary is a 60 kg test door and a recommended width of 950 mm. Vurlexat states 20–50 kg, and one reviewer had the spring come loose at 50 kg. Treat the top of a marketing band as the place the reviews already failed.
When is a concealed chain the right shape?
When you want the closer in the edge of a wooden door that is not a fire door, and you can drill the hole the listing specifies. ZAVIA states up to 50 kg and a 22 mm hole, and it says the job is not DIY friendly. A certified concealed closer from a UK ironmonger is a different product and a different budget.
When is an adhesive cable enough?
Only for a short trial on a light door, if you accept that the pads are the part reviewers lose. DODUOS states 1000 g tensile strength, which is not the weight of the door, and the pull is not adjustable. Screwing the body down is what reviewers do when the pad peels. It is not a gate closer.
Do ADA or UL marks matter in the UK?
They are United States marks. HBL' names ADA and UL, and CASONNIK names ADA. Neither is BS EN 1154, and neither is UKCA. Do not read them as approval for a British fire door or a flat entrance. A named line on a listing is still not a certificate for your leaf.
