Fire door closer regulations UK

Updated: October 2026

You have seen the words fire door on a mini closer at about £10, and you want to know whether fire door closer regulations in the UK let you fit it. They do not work like a bullet. The door has to shut fully from any open angle, and the paperwork has to belong to that door. A title is not a certificate. Prices stay on the [mini door closer comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/mini-door-closer). Peter F. read the legal detail below for England, from GOV.UK and the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022, against listings dated 19 October 2026. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own rules. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Which doors this applies to

In a block of flats, the flat entrance and the doors onto the common stairs have to close themselves so smoke does not travel the escape route. A bedroom inside a single house is different. Approved Document B’s FAQ says self-closers are no longer required on internal doors within a dwellinghouse. An HMO can still need them. A flat entrance is not that exemption. Westminster’s note for residents points to an overhead or concealed closer on a flat entrance, with an exception that can apply to some balcony doors. That is a council explanation, not a licence for the cheapest chain on amazon.co.uk. If you rent, the responsible person changes that closer. A house bedroom that was never a fire door can take a domestic spring, and the mini door closer buying guide is that choice. A door with a fire sign, strips or a label stays on this page.

The shut test

GOV.UK’s fire-door guidance asks you to let the door go from fully open, and again from about 15 degrees. Both times it has to shut and latch. The same guidance treats a gap of about 4 mm around the door as the industry check people use. A door that kisses the frame and sits ajar has not passed. If the door binds or fouls a hinge, that is not a closer fault you fix by winding the spring to its limit. The GAI checklist wants the closer to shut the door from any angle, and it tells you not to wedge the leaf. Try the two releases only as a check of a closer that is already there. Do not remove it on a flat entrance to see what happens. If it fails, tell the responsible person. Steps for an ordinary domestic closer are on the how to fit a mini door closer page, and that page sends you back here if the door is a fire door.

What the standard numbers mean

BS EN 1154:1997 is the standard for controlled door closing devices. A proper mark is six digits: opening angle, durability, power size, fire behaviour, safety and corrosion. Durability grade 8 is 500,000 cycles. Fire behaviour of 1 does not, by itself, cover your door. The doorset still needs EN 1634-1 evidence, which is the line in the DHF and GAI code of practice. UKCA or CE on a product is a mark on the closer, not a certificate that names your flat. Power size is the part shoppers confuse with a kilogram in a title. On Firesafe’s explanation, size 3 is a 60 kg test door and about 950 mm wide. Sizes 1 and 2 are not treated as fire-door closers. If width and mass fall in different sizes, take the larger. A line that says up to 50 kg is not a size 3 mark. Spring hinges that do not check the close are outside BS EN 1154, and the code of practice does not recommend them on fire and escape doors. None of the ten listings here prints the six-digit code.

What these listings do and do not show

The Napoleon N-1000, at about £49.90, is the top pick and the only listing that names BS EN 1154. It also names BS EN 1634-1 and CE, calls itself size 3, and states 20–60 kg. It is 4.5 from 503 reviews. One reviewer says it did not close an 835 mm fire door at the fastest settings and bounced before the latch. That is one door, not a lab pass or fail. It is enough to show that the words on the page did not guarantee the latch. ZAVIA’s specification field says BS EN 1634-1, with no six-digit EN 1154 code. It is a concealed chain stated up to 50 kg, and the listing is 3.0 from two reviews. The PCKOBEVER is the best value for a light timber door that is not a fire door. Its bullet lists fire doors and states 20–30 kg, with no BS EN number. GINTON’s title says home fire door closer and prints no code. HBL' names ADA and UL, United States marks, on a closer that is 5.0 from three reviews. Those letters are not a UK fire-door specification. Who each listing is for when the door is not a fire door is the best mini door closer page. On a fire door, skip the set.

Wedges, checks and who should take over

Do not wedge a fire door. GOV.UK tells residents not to tamper with closers, and the GAI checklist treats a wedge as something that defeats the closer. If you need the door held while you pass, that is a conversation with the responsible person, not a doorstop from the kitchen. In England, regulation 10 of the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 requires residents to be given information about fire doors. In buildings above 11 metres it also requires checks of communal fire doors at least every three months, and best-endeavour checks of flat entrance doors at least every twelve months, including the self-closer. If the closer on your flat door has been removed, tell the responsible person. Do not replace it with the best value spring at about £8.59 because a listing used the words fire door. A fire-door fitter changes hardware on a rated door, with evidence for that doorset. If the door is only a house bedroom and it was never a fire door, you are outside this duty.

Common questions

Does every internal fire door in a house need a closer?
Not under the Approved Document B FAQ for a single dwellinghouse, which says self-closers are no longer required on internal doors in that kind of home. An HMO can still need them. A door that already has strips or a label is not an invitation to remove the closer. Flat entrances are outside the house exemption.
Does a flat entrance door need a self-closer?
The entrance to the flat has to shut itself to protect the common escape route. Westminster’s resident note points to an overhead or concealed closer, with a balcony exception in some cases. A mini listing that says fire door does not establish that the closer suits your door.
What is the shut test?
Let the door go from fully open, then from about 15 degrees. Both times it should shut and latch. GOV.UK’s guidance is the source of that check, and it points people at an industry gap of about 4 mm around the leaf. If the door binds, ease the door before you wind the closer harder.
Can you wedge a fire door?
A wedge holds the door open and defeats the closer. GOV.UK tells residents not to tamper with fire-door closers, and the GAI checklist says the same about wedges. If you need the door held, that is a matter for the responsible person.
Is BS EN 1634-1 on a listing the same as a certificate?
EN 1634-1 is a fire-resistance test method for a doorset. ZAVIA’s specification field names it and does not show a six-digit EN 1154 code or a report for your door. The DHF and GAI code wants the BS EN 1154 mark and EN 1634 evidence together, for the door in question. A field on an amazon.co.uk page is not that file.
Is a spring closer allowed on a fire door?
A plain spring, and spring hinges that do not check the close, sit outside BS EN 1154. PCKOBEVER names fire doors in a bullet and prints no BS EN number. It is the best value only for a light door that is not a fire door. A controlled closer marked to BS EN 1154, with evidence for that door, is the replacement the GAI checklist describes.
Who checks closers in a block above 11 metres?
In England, regulation 10 requires the responsible person to check communal fire doors at least every quarter and to use best endeavours to check flat entrance doors, including the closer, at least every year. Your part is to report a closer that fails the shut test or that has been taken off. Do not fit a chain from this set in its place.
