What door lock do I need for the door in front of you

Updated: October 2026

What door lock you need depends on the door in front of you and the hole already there, not on which listing has the most stars. A timber door, a uPVC door and a gate do not take the same hardware. The [door lock comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/door-lock) keeps four amazon.co.uk products, from about £11.64 to about £309. None is a five-lever mortice, and none of those listings states BS 3621 or TS007. The Yale 77 is the top pick, and it is also the lowest price, so there is no separate best-value badge. Peter F. checked the listings and UK guidance in October 2026, with no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the door, not the brand

A timber door, a uPVC door and a shed do not take the same hardware. Timber takes a nightlatch on the face and a mortice in the edge. uPVC locks with a multipoint strip, and the part people change is often the euro cylinder. Allianz lists a BS 3621 mortice, a multipoint, a rim nightlatch and patio hardware as different locks. ProtectUK says an embedded mortice offers more security than a rim lock. A Yale 77 nightlatch does not throw uPVC hooks.

Timber doors

On a wooden front door the security lock is usually a mortice in the edge, often a five-lever bolt to BS 3621. The nightlatch is the second lock. The Yale 77, at about £11.64, copies a 60 mm hole. The listing says standard security, not BS 3621. Yale's BS1, from £76.99 and marked BS 3621:2007, is not in this set. The QWORK at about £11.99 is a gold rim latch with no stated backset, and an App field the keys contradict. The nightlatch or mortice page takes that timber choice further.

uPVC and composite doors

A uPVC or composite door locks when you lift the handle, throw the hooks and take the key out. police.uk calls that lift, lock, remove, and points to a TS007 3-star cylinder when you change the barrel. A rim hole through the plastic face leaves the multipoint unused. The Nuki at about £309 is the only listing here for a euro-profile door, and the box includes a cylinder. The amazon.co.uk capture does not state TS007. A rated cylinder on its own is a different shelf.

Gates, sheds and cupboards

A gate, store or cupboard often needs a code, not a final-exit standard. The ANNFUZ at about £50 is a mechanical keypad with no battery, for 35–60 mm doors, a fixed 60 mm backset and no glass. One UK reviewer found the set buttons open it in any order. The listing says press C, then four to seven characters. If the hole is not 60 mm, this lock does not adjust.

What this comparison cannot sell you

This shortlist has no mortice and no TS007 cylinder on its own. If the schedule names BS 3621, leave these four, or keep the mortice and add a nightlatch only as the second device. Yale's BS1, with Kitemark KM 21358, is not an ASIN here. The door lock insurance page is why a fitted lock that is not used can still fail a claim. For a new mortice, a dropped uPVC door or unknown keys, use a locksmith via locksmiths.co.uk.

Common questions

What lock does a wooden front door need?
On a timber final exit, public guidance treats a mortice in the door edge as the security lock, often a five-lever bolt to BS 3621, with a nightlatch as the extra. The Yale 77 at about £11.64 replaces a matching 60 mm nightlatch and is listed as standard security, not BS 3621. If you have no mortice, the 77 does not fill that gap.
Can I put a nightlatch on a uPVC door?
A surface nightlatch is the wrong family for a uPVC multipoint door. The door locks by the strip in the edge and the euro cylinder, and police.uk describes the habit as lift, lock, remove. Drilling the face for a 32 mm rim hole does not recreate that. The Nuki Ultra is the only product here built for a euro-profile door, and its amazon.co.uk listing still does not state TS007.
Is a euro cylinder the same as a door lock?
No. A euro cylinder is the barrel a key turns, often inside a multipoint lock or a mortice. A door lock in this comparison means a complete device: the Yale and QWORK rim latches, the ANNFUZ keypad, or the Nuki motor plus the cylinder in its box. Replacing a snapped cylinder is a different purchase from any of the nightlatches.
Do I need BS 3621 or TS007?
They apply to different parts. BS 3621 is the usual Kitemark cited for a mortice or a rated nightlatch on a final exit. TS007, at 3-star or an equivalent the listing actually states, is the rating police.uk points to when you change a euro cylinder. None of the four amazon.co.uk listings states either mark. Your schedule can ask for one, both, or a multipoint instead.
What if I only want a code on a shed or gate?
The ANNFUZ, at about £50, is the battery-free keypad, for 35–60 mm doors, not glass, with a fixed 60 mm backset. Seven reviews is a small sample, and one UK reviewer found the code works in any button order. That can be enough for a shed. It is a weak choice if the gate is the only barrier to the house, or if you need the buttons pressed in a set sequence.
When should I stop and call a locksmith?
Stop when the work is a mortice cut, a uPVC door that has dropped, a rotten frame, glass, or a lock whose old keys may still be out after a move. Measuring a 60 mm backset and screwing a like-for-like nightlatch to sound timber is the DIY job in this set. The Master Locksmiths Association lists members at locksmiths.co.uk for the rest.
