Euro cylinder lock: which profile and which split

Updated: October 2026

You are replacing a barrel and the title in front of you only quotes an overall length. A euro cylinder lock fits when the profile matches the lock and the split matches both sides of the fixing screw. The price comes after that. This page is the order of those decisions. It does not rank the ten amazon.co.uk listings. The [lock cylinder comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/lock-cylinder) holds the prices, the stars and the stated sizes. Peter F. used those listings and public UK guidance in October 2026. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Euro, thumbturn, half or rim

A euro profile is the barrel most UK uPVC and composite multipoint locks use. Key both sides is a double cylinder. A thumbturn is a key outside and a turn inside, and the T in a size such as 35/35T is that turn. A half cylinder works from one side only. None of these ten listings is a half. A rim cylinder sits in a surface night latch, and the size is door thickness, not a 35/35 split. The Yale 1109, at about £9.12, states doors of 38–57 mm. The Sterling 5-pin rim, at about £7.99, states no thickness, and the saved listing links to one address while printing another ASIN. Neither will slide into a uPVC gearbox. Handing sits on the thumbturn euro cylinder page. The T side is the inside.

Read the split, not the overall length

Lock and Key measure from the centre of the fixing-screw hole to each end. Overall length hides that split. 35/35 is 70 mm overall. 50/50 is 100 mm. 30/35 is 65 mm, the Wavanta title at about £9.49, and it is not a symmetric 35/35 door. DIDA, at about £12.99, writes both 40/40 and 35:10:35 for the same 80 mm cylinder. The middle 10 mm is the cam written out, not an extra centimetre of barrel. Federal writes 35T/35, and one reviewer measured 72 mm against an expected 70 mm. The screw and the 3 mm limit are on the how to change a euro cylinder page.

The mark, after the size

A correct split still leaves the street door. West Yorkshire Police point to a TS007 solution that totals three stars, or to Sold Secure SS312 Diamond, and they do not want the outside proud by more than 3 mm. The Master Locksmiths Association’s January 2025 guideline looks for BS EN 1303:2015 key-security grade 5 and attack grade 2, plus TS007 or SS312 where snapping is the risk. Only the greenteQ Orion, the comparison’s top pick, states a TS007 3-star Kitemark in a bullet. Only the Federal Gabriel states TS007:2024 with Sold Secure Diamond. The XFORT 50/50 is the best value, at about £13.99, and its anti-pick line is not that mark. What the stars mean is on the anti-snap euro cylinder page. Approved Document Q applies to new dwellings.

Keys in the box

Five keys means five keys for that one cylinder, not a keyed-alike back door. Wavanta and both Valorada cylinders state five keys. Each XFORT states three. greenteQ’s components line lists lock and screws only, while reviewers say five keys arrived. If someone is locked in, call a locksmith.

Common questions

What does 35/45 mean on a euro cylinder?
35/45 is the split, in millimetres, from the centre of the fixing screw to each end. One side is 35 mm and the other is 45 mm, so the overall length is 80 mm. That is the same overall length as a 40/40 and it is not the same door. None of these ten listings is titled 35/45. Ordering 40/40 because the total matches puts the cam in the wrong place.
Is 70 mm always 35/35?
No. 35/35 adds up to 70 mm, and so does 30/40. Valorada and greenteQ state 35/35 for a 70 mm euro cylinder. Federal states 35T/35, and one reviewer measured 72 mm. If an old packet only gives an overall length, measure both sides before you treat 70 mm as 35/35.
Will a euro cylinder fit a Yale night latch?
No. A night latch takes a rim cylinder. Yale’s 1109 and the Sterling 5-pin are the rim rows here, sized by door thickness. Every 35/35 and 50/50 in the set is a euro barrel for a multipoint lock. A similar price does not make the shapes interchangeable.
Does BS EN 1303 mean a 3-star cylinder?
No. BS EN 1303 is the European cylinder standard. The Master Locksmiths Association’s guideline looks for the 2015 edition with key-security grade 5 and attack grade 2, written as a classification. TS007 stars and Sold Secure Diamond are separate UK marks. DIDA prints BS EN 1303:2005 without those grades. That line is not a 3-star Kitemark.
Can the five keys open the back door as well?
Only if a locksmith keyed the cylinders alike, which these packs do not do. Three or five keys are spares for the cylinder in the box. One Valorada thumbturn reviewer could not get further keys cut. Re-pinning a Kitemarked cylinder outside a registered locksmith can void the Kitemark.
Which side is the T on a thumbturn?
The T is the thumbturn, and it goes on the inside. A size written 35/35T or 50/50T is key outside and turn inside when it is fitted that way. Federal writes 35T/35, so read which end the listing calls the turn before you fit it the other way round. The outside does not become a turn because you wanted an easier exit.
