How to apply security window film

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are standing at a ground-floor window with a roll of clear film and a pane a visitor can reach from the path. The job is a wet fit on the indoor face of smooth glass: check the glass, split the liner, push the water out, and stop about 1–3 mm short of the frame. Widths and listing claims sit on the [security window film comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/security-window-film). If you still need a width, choose it before you spray. Peter F. used National Protective Security Authority notes, Glass and Glazing Federation datasheets, a UK trade application guide, and amazon.co.uk fit lines. We did not fit these rolls in a lab. Check the glass before you wet it

Security window film goes on the interior face of smooth float glass, as one piece. National Protective Security Authority guidance EBP 09/13 treats that daylight application as the method and warns that glass under about 3 mm can crack under fitting pressure. A thin cottage sash can flex under a squeegee. If the pane bows under a light indoor press, stop, because harder pressure cracks a thin sheet with the film only half on. Leave textured, frosted, hand-cast, wired, and cracked glass alone. NPSA does not recommend anti-shatter film on laminated, textured, hand-cast, or wired glass, and the film will not turn toughened glass into a security laminate. A rippled bathroom pane shows the limit: a dry fingertip feels a pattern the adhesive cannot fill. Clear safety film is on the Glass and Glazing Federation list that should not cause thermal breakage, in Datasheet 5.18.8. Dark solar film is the thermal risk, so keep a dark film off glass you cannot name. Failed putty and an overhead pane need a glazier, because film does not repair the frame. If the roll is still unchosen, use the security window film buying guide before you spray.

Wet fit, from liner to squeegee

Clean the indoor glass with the slip solution on your roll and remove grit first. Glass and Glazing Federation Datasheet 5.18.2 treats that clean as a pre-check for a trained applicator, and a home fit has little chance of a tidy second go once the film has grabbed. Split the liner with two pieces of low-tack tape on a corner, the method in the Maxam UK guide and on the AWKAQUN listing, and peel it back as you lay the sheet. Spray the adhesive, not only the glass. Dry fitting locks the film out of square. Shackcom’s bullets say peel and stick, while reviews of that listing stress water. Where they disagree, fit it wet with the slip solution named on the roll. The Shackcom roll is the best value in the comparison, and the wet method still applies. Skip a homemade washing-up mix. Moisturisers in some detergents can weaken the bond, even where another listing only says soapy water. Squeegee from the centre to the edges. Maxam says security film usually needs that pass a second time. A wide sheet, including the BDF top pick, is easier with a second person on the top edge. Small water pockets after that second pass belong to the cure, which starts once the gap is set.

Leave a gap, and do not join the pane

Stop about 1–3 mm short of the frame. NPSA sets that daylight gap so you can wipe the liquid away, and it allows up to 5 mm only if the frame is irregular. On a straight uPVC bead, about 1 mm is enough. Film pushed into the gasket traps water the next pass cannot shift, so wipe the bead once the sheet is down. Do not tuck the sheet under a sealed-unit edge or the glazing bead. Do not cover only part of the pane, and do not join two pieces on one sheet. NPSA notes that joints reduce performance and that the application is one piece. A seam down a patio door stays a weak line even when the overlap looks neat. If the roll is narrower than the glass, use which listing fits which pane rather than butting offcuts. Trim on the film side of the gap. If the blade hits the rubber, leave the short edge.

Haze is usually water

Cloudiness the next afternoon is often water leaving the adhesive. Maxam’s guide treats mist and bubbles during cure as normal. UK installers publish dry-out ranges that conflict, from about a month to several months for thick film, so do not take 24 hours, 14 days, 30 days, or 100 days as your rule. NPSA ties cure to temperature and thickness. A cold north-facing bathroom clears more slowly than a warm kitchen. Datasheet 5.18.3 defines cure as expected adhesion plus the end of that water haze, and it separates cure from performance. A correct fit can hold glass before the pane looks clear. Grit still trapped in a hard spot after the haze has gone is dirt, and peeling the sheet to chase it usually ruins the adhesive. Call a glazier for a new or replacement window under Part Q, if broken glass would expose a handle, if an insurer or a blast note wants a current certificate, if the pane is overhead or the putty has failed, or if you cannot name the glass and you want a dark film. The home case is one wet piece on smooth interior float glass.

Common questions

Do I fit security window film wet or dry?
Fit it wet. Spray the glass and the adhesive, then squeegee from the centre. A dry lay sticks out of square. If the listing says peel and stick while the reviews stress water, follow the wet method so the sheet can still slide. Leave about 1–3 mm at the frame. Skip a homemade washing-up mix if the detergent contains moisturisers that can weaken the bond.
How do I get the liner off?
Put two pieces of low-tack tape on one corner, one on the film and one on the liner, and pull them apart. Maxam and the AWKAQUN listing both describe that split. Peel the liner only as you lay the wet sheet. If a corner will not part, move the tape. Keep the blade off the glass.
How big a gap should I leave at the frame?
Leave about 1–3 mm of bare glass, or up to 5 mm where the frame is irregular. That is the NPSA daylight gap, so you can wipe the liquid away. On a straight bead, about 1 mm is enough. Keep the film out of the gasket and out from under the bead, or the trapped water will not clear.
Can I join two pieces on one pane?
Use one piece for the whole pane. NPSA notes that joints reduce performance, so a seam on a patio door stays a weaker line. If the roll is narrower than the glass, change the roll. Tucking an edge under the sealed unit breaks the same rule. Trim on the film side of the gap, and stop if the blade meets the rubber.
Why is the film cloudy the next day?
The cloud is usually water still in the adhesive. Installer ranges do not agree, from about a month to several months on thicker film, so there is no single waiting time. GGF Datasheet 5.18.3 says a sound fit can perform before the haze has gone. Grit left in a sharp bubble after that is dirt. Peeling the sheet to chase that grit usually ruins the adhesive.
Which glass should I not film?
Skip glass under about 3 mm if you would need heavy pressure. NPSA warns that thin glass can crack during fitting. Also skip laminated, textured, hand-cast, wired, frosted, and cracked panes. Film will not turn toughened glass into a security laminate. If you cannot name the pane and you wanted a dark film, ask a glazier. Dark solar film is the thermal risk. Clear safety film is on the GGF list that should not cause thermal breakage.
When should a glazier do this instead?
Call a glazier for a new or replacement window under Part Q, if a break would expose a handle, or if an insurer wants a current certificate. Overhead glass, failed putty, and a rotten bead need the same call, because film will not fix the frame. The home case is one wet piece on smooth interior float glass, with a gap of about 1–3 mm.
