Door bolt comparison 2026

The best door bolts, compared.

Top pick: QWORK rotate bolt latch Best value: JelKen 75 mm slide bolt, silver – Best value at about £3.79: score 90, 4.5 from 1,887 reviews, a short 304 slide. No padlock hole and no outside release. Updated October 2026.

A door bolt is a single-point shoot you slide or turn by hand into a keep, from the side it is fixed on. On amazon.co.uk the usual job is bathroom, bedroom or cupboard privacy, or a simple shed or gate fastening, not a front-door lock. Quality in the set is a solid stainless shoot with usable screws, against a light alloy body whose screws shear. None of the twelve prints a BS EN 12051 code, so a heavy-duty title is not a grade. An entrance door still wants BS 3621 or BS 8621. The rotate latch ties that top score and stays off the award, because its size and metal lines conflict. How the types differ is in the [door bolt buying guide](/hub/door-and-window-security/door-bolt/sub/door-bolt-buying-guide). They do not buy one as a front-door lock. It classifies use, durability, fire, safety, corrosion and security.

The best door bolts in detail

QWORK rotate bolt latch

Rank 1

QWORK rotate bolt latch

Our view

The QWORK WD4347 is a small rotate latch at £5.95, rated 4.6 from 1,833 reviews, and reviewers use the turn as a bathroom snib after a slide bolt stuck. It is not a long shoot: the bullet gives 2¼ by 1½ inch while another line prints 5.5 × 39.5 mm, and those sizes cannot both be right. The bullet says zinc alloy and an attribute says stainless steel, while a further attribute says keyed even though the reviews describe a turn with no key and no outside release. One reviewer says a kick would open the cupboard, and there is no vacant/engaged window. The listed weight is 118 g. Choose it when a sticking slide is the problem on a bathroom or cupboard door.

Pros

  • Turn action that reviewers use when a slide has stuck
  • 4.6 from 1,833 reviews at £5.95
  • Screws included
  • Small enough for a bathroom or cupboard door

Cons

  • Two printed sizes that cannot both be right
  • Bullet says zinc alloy; an attribute says stainless steel
  • No outside release and no vacant/engaged sign
  • A reviewer says a kick would open the cupboard

Best for: A bathroom or cupboard door where you want a turn instead of a slide, and privacy is the job.

Less suitable: A gate, a rebated door that needs a 75 mm necked barrel, or any door that needs an outside release.

Common questions

Is this a slide bolt?

No. The model name is a rotate bolt latch, and reviews describe a turn rather than a slide.

What material is printed?

The bullet says zinc alloy. The attribute table says stainless steel. Both are in the saved listing.

Does it include a key?

An attribute says keyed. The bullets and the reviews describe a turn latch, not a key or an outside release.

SAYAYO padlock-hole slide bolt

Rank 2

SAYAYO padlock-hole slide bolt

Our view

The SAYAYO EMS8000-B is the only listing in this set with a stated 16 mm bar, 150 mm long, and an 8 mm padlock hole, at £8.49 and 4.6 from 1,675 reviews. The material line is 304 stainless, the finish is matte black, and the listed weight is 368 g. The padlock is not in the box, so the hole is only a latch until you add one, and the title says 160 mm while the bar is given as 150 mm. The listing allows left or right and vertical or horizontal fitting. No BS EN 12051 code is printed, and it locks from the side it is fixed on unless you can reach over the gate. It is the gate bolt to open first here, and the wrong product for a bathroom snib or a front-door lock.

Pros

  • 16 mm bar, 150 mm, with an 8 mm padlock hole
  • 4.6 from 1,675 reviews at £8.49
  • 304 stainless claim, matte black, 368 g
  • Listing allows left or right, and vertical or horizontal

Cons

  • Padlock is not included
  • Title length 160 mm does not match the 150 mm bar
  • No printed BS EN 12051 code
  • Works from the fitted side unless you can reach over

Best for: A timber gate or shed door that needs a thick slide and a separate padlock, with fixings you cannot undo from outside.

Less suitable: A bathroom, a cupboard, a coastal site that needs grade-4 corrosion, or a shed where police advice is two hasps.

Can it be fitted either way up?

The listing says left or right, and vertical or horizontal.

JelKen 75 mm slide bolt, silver

Rank 3

JelKen 75 mm slide bolt, silver

Our view

The JelKen silver slide is a 75 mm by 35 mm body at £3.79, with a grade-304 claim, six screws and a 4 mm mount hole, and the captured listing ranked it 1 in Latches & Bolts at 4.5 from 1,887 reviews. Buyers use that short shoot on cupboards, bathrooms and light internal doors when the faces are flush. One reviewer found 75 mm too big for the gap they had, so the stile still needs measuring, and another described being shut in the bathroom because a plain slide has no outside release. The title also names sheds, gardens and fences, yet there is no padlock hole, so it does not lock a shed while you are out. The black JelKen file repeats this same review sample, so those stars are not a second test.

Pros

  • 75 × 35 mm slide at £3.79, rank 1 in Latches & Bolts on the captured listing
  • 4.5 from 1,887 reviews
  • Grade-304 claim, six screws and a 4 mm mount hole
  • Straight slide for a flush cupboard or light internal door

Cons

  • No outside release; one reviewer was shut in a bathroom
  • One reviewer found 75 mm too big for the gap
  • No padlock hole, so it does not lock a shed
  • The star line is shared with the black JelKen listing

Best for: A flush cupboard, airing cupboard or light internal door, when you can reach the bolt from the side it is fixed on.

Less suitable: A rebated frame, a gate that needs a padlock, a fire door, or a bathroom that someone outside must be able to open.

Common questions

Does this bolt include screws?

The listing includes six stainless steel screws and a 4 mm mount hole.

No padlock hole is stated. It is a hand slide bolt.

What length is the body?

The listing gives a 75 mm by 35 mm main body and calls the size 3 inch, one pack.

JelKen 75 mm slide bolt, black

Rank 4

JelKen 75 mm slide bolt, black

Our view

This black JelKen is listed at £3.99 with a 73 mm by 38 mm body, a 24 mm by 38 mm receiver, eight screws, a 4.5 mm mount hole and a 90 g weight, which differs from the silver listing. The saved listing repeats the same 4.5 from 1,887 reviews and the same best-seller rank, so the stars are shared text, not a second sample. The grade-304 claim and the shed, garden and fence wording sit on both, and a review in that shared sample describes a bathroom bolt that stuck and shut someone in. Eight screws are what this file adds. Buy the black finish when the body size matches the stile, and do not treat the star line as new evidence. It is still a short slide with no padlock hole.

Pros

  • Black 73 × 38 mm body at £3.99
  • Eight screws and a 4.5 mm mount hole stated
  • Grade-304 claim on a straight slide
  • Receiver given as 24 × 38 mm

Cons

  • Review sample and rank are shared with the silver JelKen listing
  • Shared reviews include a bolt that stuck in a bathroom
  • No padlock hole
  • Shed wording on a 75 mm slide does not make it a shed lock

Best for: A flush indoor door that needs a black short slide, when you judge it on the body size rather than on a separate review count.

Less suitable: Anyone treating the 1,887 reviews as a second test, a rebated frame, or a padlocked gate.

Common questions

How does this differ from the silver JelKen listing?

This file shows a black finish, a 73 mm by 38 mm body, a 24 mm by 38 mm receiver, eight screws and a 90 g weight. The silver listing differs on those points.

Are the reviews separate?

The saved listing repeats the same review sample, star line and best-seller rank as B095RR82JP. Treat that as shared text, not a second sample.

Does it include screws?

The bullet says eight stainless screws and a 4.5 mm mount hole.

2-pack 75 mm slide bolts

Rank 5

2-pack 75 mm slide bolts

Our view

This pack is two polished 304 slides, 7.5 cm by 3.5 cm, listed at £4.49 and rated 4.5 from 1,325 reviews. Reviewers use one to stop a child opening a cupboard or a bathroom, and they also call the same bolts flimsy against a determined push. The title names a shed, while the indoor/outdoor attribute says indoor and the bullets name bathroom, bedroom and cupboards. Screws are said to be included, but the count is not stated and reviews mention short packs, so a soft head means you fit your own. There is no padlock hole. At about £2.25 a bolt it suits two matching cupboards, and it is the wrong pack if the frame is rebated or the gate needs a 150 mm bar.

Pros

  • Two 7.5 cm 304 slides for £4.49
  • 4.5 from 1,325 reviews
  • Used by reviewers on cupboards and bathroom doors
  • Screws stated as provided

Cons

  • Reviewers call it flimsy against a determined push
  • Screw count is not stated, and reviews mention short packs
  • Title says shed while the attribute says indoor
  • No padlock hole

Best for: Two flush cupboards or light internal doors that want the same short stainless slide.

Less suitable: A rebated frame, a padlocked gate, or any door where a kick must not open it.

SISI UK necked barrel bolt, 75 mm

Rank 6

SISI UK necked barrel bolt, 75 mm

Our view

The SISI UK 75MMCHNECK is a chrome necked barrel, 75 mm by 25 mm, at £4.59, with the bolt, a matching keep and matching screws, listed at 60 g. The rating is 4.5 from 20 reviews, and the saved listing has eight texts, so the stars are a small sample beside the 941-review necked listing at £4.99. Necked means the shoot is cranked for a door that sits inside the frame. The listing says light domestic use and also names gates, yet chrome plate in this set is the indoor finish, and a reviewer of the related SISI flat bolt called that one brass under the plate. No BS EN 12051 code is printed. Choose it for a rebated internal door when you can accept 20 ratings, and leave it for a flush face or a coastal shed.

Pros

  • Necked 75 × 25 mm barrel with keep and screws
  • £4.59 for a light domestic bolt
  • 4.5 from 20 reviews
  • Cranked shoot for a rebated frame

Cons

  • Only 20 ratings, with eight review texts in the saved listing
  • Chrome plate, and the sister listing was called brass under the chrome
  • Gate wording on a 60 g indoor-pattern bolt
  • No printed BS EN 12051 code

Best for: A rebated internal door when you want a cheap necked bolt and can accept a 20-review sample.

Less suitable: A flush face, a coastal shed, or a buyer who needs a large review sample.

Necked barrel bolt 75 mm, chrome

Rank 7

Necked barrel bolt 75 mm, chrome

Our view

This chrome-plated necked barrel is 75 mm by 25 mm, listed at £4.99 and rated 4.4 from 941 reviews. The neck is the reason to buy it: the shoot is cranked so it can meet a keep when the door sits inside the frame. The bullets describe internal doors, bathrooms and cupboards, not a weatherproof outdoor bolt, and chrome here is a plate rather than a stainless grade. There is no padlock and no separate key, and an attribute block prints a 1 inch-16 UNC thread and “Grade 8”, which do not belong to this bolt. Reviews treat it as an internal door bolt. Fit it on a rebated internal door, and leave it if the faces are already flush.

Pros

  • Necked 75 × 25 mm barrel for a rebated frame
  • 4.4 from 941 reviews
  • Described for internal doors, bathrooms and cupboards
  • Chrome finish at £4.99

Cons

  • Chrome plate, not a stated stainless grade
  • No padlock hole and no outside release
  • Thread and “Grade 8” attributes do not describe the bolt
  • Not described as a weatherproof outdoor bolt

Best for: An internal door or cupboard whose face sits back from the frame, so a straight shoot would miss the keep.

Less suitable: Flush faces, a shed or gate, and any door that is someone’s only way out.

Common questions

When is a necked bolt the one to choose?

This listing is a necked barrel bolt, the pattern used when the door and frame faces are not flush.

Does it include a key?

The description is a slide bolt for privacy. It does not describe a separate lock or key.

Is it described as an outdoor bolt?

The bullets describe internal doors, bathrooms and cupboards, not a weatherproof outdoor bolt.

YUOIP 3 inch sheet slide latch

Rank 8

YUOIP 3 inch sheet slide latch

Our view

The YUOIP latch is stamped stainless sheet, 8.4 cm by 4.6 cm and 58 g, listed at £3.99 with six M4 × 16 mm screws and a 4 mm mount hole. Across 3,257 amazon.co.uk reviews it sits at 4.3, the largest sample in this set. Reviewers fit it on bathrooms, cabinets and a bin store, and they also call the folded edges sharp and the body flimsy enough that one person fitted two. The bullet says one latch while a unit-count attribute says 7, and the shape is symmetrical so you choose the direction when you screw it on. A small bolt of this sort can stop a child opening a cupboard. A determined push is what the flimsy reviews describe.

Pros

  • Stamped stainless sheet at £3.99
  • 4.3 from 3,257 reviews, the largest sample here
  • Six M4 × 16 mm screws and a 4 mm mount hole
  • Symmetrical, so the direction is chosen at fitting

Cons

  • Folded sheet with sharp edges in a review
  • Reviewers call the body flimsy; one person fitted two
  • Unit-count attribute says 7 while the bullet says one latch
  • No padlock hole and no long shoot

Best for: A bathroom, cabinet or bin-store door where a light sheet latch is enough and you will mind the edges.

Less suitable: A gate, a security point, or a door you expect to resist a kick.

The bullet says one latch. A unit-count attribute says 7, which conflicts with that bullet.

SHIZHENFU black slide bolts, 2-pack

Rank 9

SHIZHENFU black slide bolts, 2-pack

Our view

The SHIZHENFU pack is two black 4 inch slides at £6.98, rated 4.2 from 415 reviews, with a nickel-plated aluminium bullet and a listed weight of 71 g. The title says padbolt and names gates, but this is not the 16 mm stainless bar on the SAYAYO listing. Reviews describe tiny screws, a pin that broke, and a bolt that was too small for a side gate. The bullet says 12 screws while an attribute says included components are none, and a dimension line prints 2 × 2 × 2 cm against the 4 inch title. It can serve as a pair of light indoor slides if you replace the screws. It is not the gate bolt in this set.

Pros

  • Two black 4 inch slides at £6.98
  • 4.2 from 415 reviews
  • Bullet claims 12 screws with the pair
  • Listing allows internal and external wording, including gates

Cons

  • Nickel-plated aluminium, with reviews of a broken pin and tiny screws
  • A reviewer found it too small for a side gate
  • Screw count and the 2 × 2 × 2 cm line contradict the rest of the listing
  • No stated padlock-hole diameter

Best for: A light indoor door or cupboard where a black 4 inch slide is long enough and you will fit your own screws.

Less suitable: A side gate, a shed you leave locked, or any job that needs a thick stainless bar.

SISI UK chrome flat bolt, 4 inch

Rank 10

SISI UK chrome flat bolt, 4 inch

Our view

The SISI UK FDB-SC4-P1 is a polished chrome flat slide at £7.99, rated 4.2 from 248 reviews, with a body about 95 mm by 23 mm excluding the catch, a keep and colour-matched screws. The title says 4 inch; the 95 mm bullet is the length to measure, and the listed weight is 150 g. A reviewer identified the metal as chrome-plated brass, not stainless, and the bullets limit it to light-duty indoor doors, cupboards and storage. Another reviewer says a push on a bathroom door snapped the cast body, and sheared screws also appear on chrome bolts in this set. It is a chrome look for a flush internal door if you accept a light casting. It is not a necked bolt and not a shed bolt.

Pros

  • Flat chrome slide with keep and colour-matched screws
  • Body about 95 mm by 23 mm excluding the catch
  • 4.2 from 248 reviews at £7.99
  • Described for light-duty indoor doors and cupboards

Cons

  • A reviewer calls it chrome-plated brass, not stainless
  • A push on a bathroom door snapped the cast body in one review
  • Sheared screws show up on chrome bolts in this set
  • Not a necked bolt and not described for outdoor use

Best for: A flush internal door or cupboard where you want a polished chrome flat bolt and a light indoor job.

Less suitable: A rebated frame, a shed, or a door that takes a hard push.

XFORT chrome slide bolts, 2 x 100 mm

Rank 11

XFORT chrome slide bolts, 2 x 100 mm

∼£15

Our view

The XFORT pair, model HEAVYBOLTPC100MM, is two 100 mm polished chrome surface bolts in solid steel at £14.99, made for XFORT by Maher London Ltd and rated 4.1 from 1,514 reviews. The listed weight is 240 g, and the description covers internal doors, cupboards, attics and cellars as an extra surface fastening, with keeps and screws. Reviewers also report knobs snapping and loose castings, so the highest price here is not a test certificate. An attribute says Wi-Fi, while the product text is a mechanical knob on a steel shoot. A 150 mm size is a different option, not this ASIN. Use the pair when two internal doors want the same 100 mm chrome bolt.

Pros

  • Two 100 mm solid-steel bolts with keeps and screws
  • Polished chrome, made for XFORT by Maher London Ltd
  • 4.1 from 1,514 reviews
  • Described for internal doors, cupboards, attics and cellars

Cons

  • £14.99 is the top price in this set, and knobs snap in reviews
  • Loose castings are also reported
  • Wi-Fi attribute does not match a mechanical shoot
  • No padlock hole and no printed bolt grade

Best for: Two flush internal doors that want a matching 100 mm chrome surface bolt as an extra fastening.

Less suitable: A smart-lock search, a gate, a fire door, or a final exit that needs a BS 3621 lock.

YIXINHE black slide bolts, 2-pack

Rank 12

YIXINHE black slide bolts, 2-pack

Our view

The YIXINHE pack is two black 4 inch nickel-plated aluminium slides at £4.99, with a stated size of 10 cm by 2.5 cm by 1.5 cm and a listed weight of 70 g. The listing is 3.9 from 19 ratings, and the saved listing has six review texts, which is too thin to treat a heavy-duty title as a result. One review says the bolt broke apart in under two months, and sheared screw heads sit with the other alloy listings in this set. The bullet says 12 screws while the included-components attribute says no. No padlock-hole diameter is stated. It is a spare pair only if you can return a body that splits.

Pros

  • Two black 4 inch slides at £4.99
  • Stated size 10 × 2.5 × 1.5 cm
  • Bullet claims 12 screws
  • Light listed weight of 70 g

Cons

  • 3.9 from only 19 ratings
  • One review says the bolt broke apart in under two months
  • Sheared screws, and the components line says none are included
  • Nickel-plated aluminium with no stated padlock hole

Best for: A low-stakes indoor trial where a return is easy if the body splits.

Less suitable: A gate, a shed, or any job where the screws and the metal have to last.

Common questions

How many reviews are on the listing?

The listing line is 3.9 out of 5 from 19 ratings. The saved listing has six review texts.

What is the stated material?

Aluminium alloy with a nickel-plated surface, black, two bolts.

Are screws listed?

The bullet says 12 screws. The included-components attribute says no.

How we compared

Scores use the twelve amazon.co.uk listings and the review notes already on the product cards. There is no lab test. Amazon stars are read with the number of reviews behind them, so 4.5 from 20 reviews does not outrank 4.5 from 1,887. A listing has to match one job: a short privacy slide, a necked barrel, a chrome flat bolt, a rotate snib, or a padlock-hole gate bolt. Stated metal and fixings count. Shared review text, a size or material line that contradicts itself, a Wi-Fi or thread attribute that does not describe the bolt, a snapped casting, and a heavy-duty title on a thin sample are deductions. No BS EN 12051 code is printed, so heavy duty is not scored as a security grade, and a padlock hole is not scored as a lock. The highest score that matches the gate-bolt job is the top pick. The lowest solid price for a short 304 slide is the best value. The weights below sum to 100.

1

Amazon stars and sample

35%

The amazon.co.uk star line, then a deduction when few reviews sit behind it. Twenty reviews at 4.5 do not outrank 1,887 reviews at 4.5. A shared review sample is not counted as a second test.

2

Job match

25%

Whether the listing matches one job: a short privacy slide, a necked barrel, a chrome flat bolt, a rotate snib, or a padlock-hole gate bolt. A surface bolt is not scored as a BS 3621 entrance lock.

3

Metal and fixings

25%

Stated metal and screws. A 304 claim with a usable screw count scores above nickel-plated aluminium whose screws and pins fail in reviews. Chrome plate is not treated as stainless.

4

Listing faults

15%

Deductions for a size or material line that contradicts itself, a Wi-Fi or thread attribute that does not describe the bolt, a snapped casting, or a heavy-duty title on a thin sample. No printed code means heavy duty is not a security grade.

Door bolt buying guide

Choose the job before the finish. A short privacy slide, a necked barrel for a rebated frame, and a padlock-hole gate bolt are different purchases. None of them is the lock you use when you leave the house. The notes below follow the twelve amazon.co.uk listings and the UK bolt and lock guidance those listings do not replace. No laboratory test sits behind the scores.

What is a door bolt?

A door bolt is a single-point shoot you slide or turn by hand into a keep, from the side it is fixed on. On amazon.co.uk people buy one for bathroom, bedroom or cupboard privacy, or as a simple shed or gate fastening. They do not buy one as a front-door lock. In this set of twelve, quality is a solid stainless shoot with usable screws, set against a light alloy body whose screws shear. BS EN 12051:2000 is the bolt standard. It classifies use, durability, fire, safety, corrosion and security.

Best for

  • Privacy on a flush cupboard, bathroom or bedroom door you can open from the fitted side
  • A timber gate that needs a thick slide and a separate padlock

Not ideal for

  • A final exit, a fire door, or a flat entrance that needs BS 3621 or BS 8621
  • A coastal shed, or a bathroom someone outside must be able to open

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Reading chrome as stainless

Chrome plate on the necked barrels, the SISI UK flat bolt and the XFORT pair is often indoor brass. A reviewer of the SISI flat bolt identified brass under the chrome. A 304 claim is what JelKen and SAYAYO print. It is not a coastal-shed certificate.

  2. 2

A straight bolt on a rebated frame

A straight shoot needs flush faces. When the door sits inside the frame, the shoot misses the keep unless the bolt is necked. In this set the necked pattern is the 75 mm by 25 mm chrome barrel, not the JelKen slide.

  3. 3

Treating a padlock hole as a lock

The SAYAYO hole is 8 mm and the padlock is not in the box. Until you add one, it is a latch. Pack screws with no pilot hole, about 2–3 mm, are the other miss. Reviewers discard tiny screws, and a hole is not a BS EN 12051 grade.

What to weigh up

Job and geometry

High

The first check is the job. A small surface bolt can give privacy on a cupboard or bathroom. A gate you leave needs a padlock hole and a separate padlock. A door that is the way out of the home needs a lock standard, not this category. ProtectUK points a house door at BS 3621:2017 and a flat entrance at BS 8621. On an escape route the door must open without a key and without more than one mechanism. None of these twelve has an outside release. Geometry is the next split.

Material and fixings

High

Material has to be read against the reviews, not only the title. JelKen and SAYAYO claim grade 304. The 2-pack slides and the YUOIP latch also state stainless, and the YUOIP body is stamped sheet that reviewers call sharp and flimsy. Chrome plate on the necked barrels, the SISI UK flat bolt and the XFORT pair is often indoor brass, and one SISI review identified brass under the chrome.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Gate or shed you leave

You want a thick slide on a timber gate or shed door, plus a padlock you buy separately. The SAYAYO is the top pick at about £8.49: a stated 16 mm bar, 150 mm long, with an 8 mm hole, and 4.6 from 1,675 reviews. It works from the fitted side. Police shed advice is still two hasps and closed-shackle padlocks.

Flush cupboard or bathroom

You want a short bolt on a flush cupboard, airing cupboard or light internal door, and you can open it from that side. The silver JelKen is the best value at about £3.79, with 4.5 from 1,887 reviews and a grade-304 claim. It has no padlock hole and no outside release. One review describes someone shut in a bathroom.

Rebated internal door

The door sits back in the frame, so a straight shoot would miss the keep. The chrome necked barrel at about £4.99 is 75 mm by 25 mm, with 4.4 from 941 reviews. Chrome is a plate, not a stated stainless grade. It is described for internal doors, not as a weatherproof shed bolt, and it has no outside release.

Common questions about door bolts

Which door bolt is the top pick in 2026?
The SAYAYO padlock-hole slide, model EMS8000-B, is the top pick. It ties the highest score in this set, 92, with a stated 16 mm bar, 150 mm long, and an 8 mm hole, at about £8.49 and 4.6 from 1,675 amazon.co.uk reviews. The padlock is not included, and no BS EN 12051 code is printed. The QWORK latch shares the score and does not take the award, because its size and metal lines conflict.
How much does a door bolt cost?
On these amazon.co.uk listings the short slides start at about £3.79 for the silver JelKen and about £3.99 for the YUOIP sheet latch. Mid listings run from about £5.95 for the QWORK turn latch to about £8.49 for the SAYAYO padbolt. The dearest item here is the XFORT pair of 100 mm chrome bolts at about £14.99. A Wickes 75 mm barrel near £5 and a 316 padbolt near £40.55 sit outside this set.
What should I check before I buy a door bolt?
Check the job first. A short slide can give privacy on a flush cupboard or bathroom. A gate you leave needs a padlock hole and a padlock. A door that is the way out of the home needs BS 3621 or BS 8621, not this category. Then check geometry: straight when the faces are flush, necked when the door is rebated. Read the metal against the reviews. None of these listings prints a BS EN 12051 code.
Is heavy duty a security grade on these bolts?
No. BS EN 12051:2000 is the bolt standard, with digits for use, durability, fire, safety, corrosion and security. None of these twelve listings prints the seven-digit code, so a heavy-duty title is not a grade. A padlock hole is not a lock, and a star rating is not a security test. An entrance door still wants BS 3621 or BS 8621. A surface bolt is not scored here as that kind of lock.
Should I buy a straight bolt or a necked barrel?
Buy a straight bolt when the door and the frame faces are flush. The JelKen 75 mm slides and the SISI UK flat bolt are that pattern. Buy a necked barrel when the door is rebated and a straight shoot would miss the keep. In this set that is the chrome 75 mm by 25 mm barrel at about £4.99, with 4.4 from 941 reviews, or the SISI UK necked bolt at about £4.59 from only 20 reviews.
Can I use one of these bolts on a shed or gate?
A gate you leave needs a padlock hole and a padlock. In this set that is the SAYAYO, and the padlock is extra. A 75 mm slide with shed wording and no hole does not lock the shed while you are out. Police advice is two hasps, one third up and one third down, with closed-shackle padlocks. That padlock is covered in the padlock comparison.
Does a slide bolt open from the outside?
No listing in this set has an outside release or a street key. A plain slide works from the side it is fixed on. One JelKen review describes someone shut in a bathroom because nobody outside could slide the bolt. The QWORK turn latch has the same limit, and it has no vacant or engaged sign. Do not use one as the only bathroom fastening if someone outside must open the door.
When should I call a locksmith or a joiner?
Call a locksmith or joiner when the door is the only way out, a fire door, or a flat entrance, when a mortice is needed and the thickness is uncertain, or when an insurer has named BS 3621 or PAS 24. Mortice work wants about 44 mm of timber. Do not add a marketplace bolt to a certified fire door. These twelve do not state a fire-door approval.

Our verdict

The SAYAYO padlock-hole slide is the top pick. It ties the highest score, 92, and it is the only stated 16 mm bar with an 8 mm hole, at about £8.49 and 4.6 from 1,675 reviews. The padlock is not included. The QWORK rotate latch also scores 92, with 4.6 from 1,833 reviews, and does not take the award: its size and metal lines conflict, and a review says a kick would open a cupboard. The silver JelKen 75 mm slide is the best value at about £3.79, with 4.5 from 1,887 reviews, as a short 304 slide with no padlock hole and no outside release. A surface bolt in this set is not a BS 3621 entrance lock.
