Disc padlock comparison 2026

The best disc padlocks, compared.

Top pick: Burg-Wächter Circle 21 70 SB – Joint highest score at about £7.45: 4.6 from 909 reviews. The Yale Y130B matches the stars from 33 reviews, at more than three times the price, with conflicting spec lines. Best value: QWORK disc lock, 1 pack – Score 86 at about £5.99 for a basic gate lock. The two-pack is the same score at about £9.45 and shares the 1,800-review count, so it does not take the value badge. Updated October 2026.

For a shed, a gate or a storage latch, UK police advice usually asks for a closed shackle. It meets BS EN 12320 or Sold Secure only if that mark is on the product. A thick chain often will not pass a discus throat. Size, shackle and grade evidence are in the [disc padlock buying guide](/hub/door-and-window-security/disc-padlock/sub/disc-padlock-buying-guide). Scores use the stored listings and review notes. A disc padlock is a keyed padlock with a round, flat body. The shackle is short and sits in the rim, which is why the shape is also called a discus or a closed-shackle lock. That is the reason to choose it over an open shackle on a shed hasp, a garden-gate staple or a storage-unit latch. It is not a defence against an angle grinder, and it does not replace a lock on a home’s final exit door.

For a shed, a gate or a storage latch, UK police advice usually asks for a closed shackle. It meets BS EN 12320 or Sold Secure only if that mark is on the product. A thick chain often will not pass a discus throat.

The best disc padlocks in detail

Burg-Wächter Circle 21 70 SB

Rank 1

Burg-Wächter Circle 21 70 SB

Our view

The Burg-Wächter Circle 21 70 SB is a 70 mm stainless discus at £7.45, about 220 g, with the shackle mostly hidden in the rim. The amazon.co.uk listing sits at 4.6 from 909 reviews, the joint highest star figure in this set, though the saved listing holds only one United Kingdom review and that is the text used here. That reviewer left it outside through a winter and still called it worth buying. The same review found it tight and fiddly on a motorcycle chain, which is what a short discus throat does. One bullet says a 9 mm shackle and another says 10 mm, and the key count is not stated. There is no CEN grade in the file, so the low price buys the shape and the listing score, not a printed grade.

Pros

  • 70 mm stainless discus at £7.45
  • 4.6 from 909 reviews, the joint highest star figure here
  • Shackle mostly hidden in the rim
  • One UK review left it outside through a winter

Cons

  • Only one United Kingdom review text in the file
  • Shackle given as 9 mm in one line and 10 mm in another
  • Tight and fiddly on a motorcycle chain
  • Key count and CEN grade are not stated

Best for: A short shed or gate staple when you want a 70 mm discus near £7.50 and you can check the shackle against the metal.

Less suitable: A thick chain, or any job that needs a printed BS EN 12320 or Sold Secure mark.

Common questions

Is the Burg-Wächter Circle 21 sold for outdoor use?

The listing does not print an outdoor claim. The one United Kingdom review left it outside through a winter and still called it worth buying.

How many keys does the Circle 21 include?

The listing does not state a key count. Do not assume two or three keys are in the box.

What shackle size does the Circle 21 state?

One bullet says 9 mm and a special-features line says 10 mm. Both are on the page. There is no CEN grade in the file.

Yale Y130B/70

Rank 2

Yale Y130B/70

∼£24

Our view

The Yale Y130B/70/116/1 is listed as an extreme high-security discus at £23.86, with a stainless body around 74 mm across and 31.6 mm thick and a 9.5 mm ring. It shares the 4.6 star figure, from only 33 reviews, and the seven UK texts are short. Buyers mention a concealed shackle, a covered keyhole that stayed smoother than open keyways, use on a beach hut, and a curved arm that one reviewer with weaker hands could move. The colour attribute says open shackle while the bullets describe a closed arc and 0 mm of clearance, and the listed weight of 115 g is far too light for that body. One UK review says three keys. There is no CEN grade in the file, so the same score as the Burg-Wächter does not make this the first lock to buy at more than three times the price.

Pros

  • Stainless body around 74 mm with a 9.5 mm ring
  • 4.6 from 33 reviews, with a covered keyhole praised in short UK texts
  • Key holding in the open position is on the bullets
  • Used on a beach hut, and one review mentions weaker hands

Cons

  • £23.86 against a £7.45 lock with the same score
  • Colour field says open shackle; bullets say a closed arc
  • Listed weight of 115 g conflicts with a 70 mm class body
  • No CEN grade, and only 33 reviews

Best for: A hasp that matches this closed body, if you have checked the lock in your hand against the conflicting listing lines.

Less suitable: A first buy on price, or anyone who needs the clearance figures to be trustworthy before ordering.

Common questions

Is the Yale Y130B an open-shackle padlock?

The colour attribute says open shackle. The bullets describe a closed arc and print 0 mm of clearance. The lines conflict, so check the lock in your hand.

How many keys does the Y130B include?

The included line says keys and a padlock. One United Kingdom review says three keys. The listing does not give a single count of its own.

Does the Y130B key stay in until the lock is shut?

A bullet says key holding in the open position. That is the key-retaining behaviour on this page. No CEN grade is stated.

Master Lock M187EURD

Rank 3

Master Lock M187EURD

∼£14

Our view

The Master Lock M187EURD is the heavier discus in this pair, 358 g, with a vinyl-coated stainless body and the same stated shackle of about 1 × 1.6 × 2.1 cm, at £13.93 with four keys. At 4.5 from 453 reviews it is bought for storage units, gates, and garages, and one reviewer still called it rust-resistant after almost two years. The closed shackle is the reason to choose the shape. The body is also called thin, rust appears in the review set, and snapped keys are mentioned. One lock arrived flat in the bag with a damaged brim. The 9/10 on the title is the maker’s own scale, not a BS EN 12320 grade, and the listing says the key is retained until you shut it.

Pros

  • Vinyl-coated stainless body at £13.93, listed at 358 g
  • 4.5 from 453 reviews for gates, garages, and storage units
  • Four keys, and the listing says the key is retained
  • One review still called it rust-resistant after almost two years

Cons

  • Body described as thin, with rust still mentioned
  • Snapped keys appear in the review set
  • One unit arrived flat with a damaged brim
  • Security level 9/10 is a maker scale, not a CEN grade

Best for: A gate or storage latch that takes this short shackle, when you want the black coated body and four keys.

Less suitable: A policy that names a BS EN 12320 grade, and a staple thicker than the stated shackle.

Common questions

Is the Master Lock M187 sold for outdoor use?

The listing says outdoor and weather resistant, with a vinyl-coated stainless body. Reviews still mention rust, so the claim is not a promise against salt air.

How many keys does the M187 include?

The listing states four keys. It also says the key is retained until the lock is shut.

Is security level 9/10 a CEN grade?

No. The 9/10 on the title is Master Lock’s own scale. It is not a BS EN 12320 grade, and the listing does not state one.

ABUS Diskus 220/70

Rank 4

ABUS Diskus 220/70

∼£20

Our view

The ABUS 220/70 is a 70 mm stainless discus, 27 mm deep, with a 10 mm shackle, 17 mm of clear height, and 19.5 mm of clear width, at £19.60 with two keys. At 4.5 from 135 reviews, buyers say the hidden shackle stops bolt-cropper access and that it sits neatly on a 120 mm hasp and comes off a bolt one-handed. One beach-hut review reports no rust so far, and a repeat buyer says it does not freeze up, though others say it is too early to judge rust and that the first uses feel stiff. Only two keys are in the box, and this listing states no manufacturer guarantee. ABUS level 7 on the page is the maker’s scale, and the file does not say whether this ASIN keeps the key until the lock is shut.

Pros

  • 70 mm stainless body with a stated 10 mm shackle
  • Clear height 17 mm and clear width 19.5 mm, so you can measure the staple
  • 4.5 from 135 reviews; fits a 120 mm hasp in one account
  • No rust so far on one beach hut, and no freeze-up for a repeat buyer

Cons

  • £19.60 with only two keys
  • Stiff in early use for some buyers
  • No manufacturer guarantee on the listing
  • Level 7 is a maker scale, not a CEN grade

Best for: A shed hasp that accepts about 17 mm of clear height and a 10 mm shackle, when you do not need a printed grade.

Less suitable: A thick chain, a staple taller than that clearance, or a contract that names a CEN or Sold Secure mark.

Common questions

Is the ABUS 220/70 sold for outdoor use?

The bullets say rustproof and corrosion-resistant. One beach-hut review reports no rust so far, and other buyers say it is too early to judge. Level 7 is not a CEN grade.

How many keys does the 220/70 include?

The listing states two keys. It also states no manufacturer guarantee. The page does not say whether the key is retained.

What clearance does the 220/70 state?

Clear height 17 mm and clear width 19.5 mm, with a 10 mm shackle, on a 70 mm body that is 27 mm deep. A bullet also says 258 g beside a 230 g item line.

Master Lock M40EURD

Rank 5

Master Lock M40EURD

∼£14

Our view

The Master Lock M40EURD is a stainless discus with a covered keyway and four keys, listed at £13.95, and the shrouded shackle is given as about 1 × 1.6 × 2.1 cm. Across 1,051 amazon.co.uk reviews at 4.4, buyers put it on storage units, shed bolts, and a garage T-bar, and several treat the key-retaining action as a check that the lock is actually shut. The small opening stopped one shed bolt from being slipped past a wider padlock, and the body is often called solid. Keys are described as thin, and the shackle needs a jiggle before it lines up. A picking-hobby review says the 4-pin cylinder is easy to rake and disputes the maker’s 8/10, which is not a BS EN 12320 grade. On a beach hut it rusted solid within about a year and the key bent; other outdoor notes mention rust after about six months.

Pros

  • Stainless discus at £13.95 with a covered keyway and four keys
  • 4.4 from 1,051 amazon.co.uk reviews, used on sheds and storage units
  • Key stays in until the lock is shut, which some buyers use as a reminder
  • Short opening that stopped a shed bolt sliding past a wider lock

Cons

  • Keys called thin, and the shackle needs aligning
  • Rusted solid on a beach hut within about a year
  • Maker security level 8/10 is not a CEN grade
  • A review says the 4-pin cylinder is easy to rake

Best for: A shed bolt or a storage-unit latch that accepts this short shackle, if you want four keys and you are not leaving it in salt air.

Less suitable: A beach hut or other harsh coastal exposure, and any staple the stated shackle will not enter.

Common questions

Is the Master Lock M40 sold for outdoor use?

The listing says indoor and outdoor, and weather resistant, with a covered keyway. A beach-hut review says it rusted solid within about a year, so salt air is a real limit.

How many keys does the M40 include?

The listing states four keys. It also says the key stays in until the lock is shut.

Is security level 8/10 a CEN grade?

No. The 8/10 is Master Lock’s own scale. A review also says the 4-pin cylinder is easy to rake. The page does not state a BS EN 12320 grade.

QWORK disc lock, 1 pack

Rank 6

QWORK disc lock, 1 pack

Our view

The QWORK one-pack is a round keyed disc lock at £5.99, listed at 184 g, with two keys and a stainless shackle whose diameter is not stated. The listing shows 4.3 from 1,800 reviews, the same count as the two-pack, so that figure may be a shared pool rather than 1,800 buyers of this exact pack. Short reviews call it cheap and acceptable on gates, and one reviewer says it is not worth the money. The body is described as very lightweight folded metal with a simple key, and oiling comes up. A shape attribute says rectangular while the title says round, and the body size is missing from this file. It is a basic gate lock you can return if the throat does not fit, and it is not a stand-in for a graded closed-shackle fitting.

Pros

  • £5.99 for a keyed round lock and two keys
  • 4.3 shown from 1,800 reviews, used on gates
  • Short reviews call it acceptable for a basic outdoor lock
  • Light enough, at a listed 184 g, to carry as a spare

Cons

  • Body described as lightweight folded metal
  • Needs oil, and one reviewer says it is not worth the money
  • Shackle diameter and body size are not in this file
  • The 1,800-review count matches the two-pack listing

Best for: A garden-gate staple where a cheap round lock is enough and you can return it if it does not close.

Less suitable: A shed full of tools, a coastal site, or any rule that names a grade or a 10 mm shackle.

Common questions

Is the QWORK one-pack sold for outdoor use?

The listing makes a waterproof claim, and short reviews mention gates. That claim is not evidence the lock will resist salt air, and reviewers mention oiling.

How many keys are in the QWORK one-pack?

The listing states two keys with the one lock. It does not say the key is retained until the lock is shut.

Why is the 1,800-review figure treated with care?

The one-pack and the two-pack both print 4.3 from 1,800 reviews. Do not add those counts, and do not read 1,800 as buyers of this pack alone.

QWORK disc lock, 2 pack

Rank 7

QWORK disc lock, 2 pack

Our view

The QWORK two-pack is the same round disc shape at £9.45 for two locks, 368 g together, with a stated shackle diameter of 3/8 inch and a lock height of 3/4 inch, and two keys on each lock. It prints the same 4.3 from 1,800 reviews as the one-pack, so those counts should not be added together. Reviews praise a low price on gates and describe a basic lock that wants oil. The included-components line says one lock while the title says two, and the listing carries a sold-from-abroad warning. The plate is described as lightweight folded metal. There is no grade and no key-retaining claim, and this file does not say the two locks share a key.

Pros

  • Two round locks at £9.45, with two keys each
  • Stated shackle diameter of 3/8 inch
  • Same 4.3 review figure as the one-pack, used on gates
  • A low price if you actually receive two locks

Cons

  • Included-components line says one lock; the title says two
  • Lightweight folded plate, and oiling is expected
  • Review count is shared with the one-pack, so do not double it
  • Sold-from-abroad warning, and no grade

Best for: Two gate staples of the same size, if you check that both locks are in the parcel and you do not need them keyed alike.

Less suitable: One high-value shed, or a landlord who needs a single key that the listing never promises.

Common questions

Is the QWORK two-pack sold for outdoor use?

The listing makes a waterproof claim, and reviews mention gates. The plate is described as lightweight folded metal that wants oil. There is no security grade.

How many locks and keys are in the two-pack?

The title says two locks with two keys each. The included-components line says one lock. Check the parcel. The page does not say the two locks share a key.

What shackle size does the two-pack state?

The listing states a shackle diameter of 3/8 inch, about 9.5 mm, and a lock height of 3/4 inch. The review count matches the one-pack, so do not add the two 1,800s.

XiangJunly 70 mm, 2 pack

Rank 8

XiangJunly 70 mm, 2 pack

Our view

The XiangJunly pack is two 70 mm disc locks at £8.49, listed at 390 g together, with a 201 stainless body claimed and a hardened steel shackle that is not given a diameter. At 4.2 from 33 reviews, some buyers call them sturdy for the price and one notes brass innards and a welded rim. The two locks do not share a key, which a UK review states, and the bullets do not claim they are keyed alike. Others call them light, sticky, and cheaply made, with a throat seam that is not sealed, and one buyer was returning them as light rubbish. The key count is not stated. There is no grade, so a pair at this price only suits two staples you have already measured, each with its own key.

Pros

  • Two 70 mm locks at £8.49
  • 4.2 from 33 reviews, with some calling them sturdy for the price
  • 201 stainless body and a hardened shackle are claimed
  • Not sold as keyed alike, which matches a UK review

Cons

  • Light and cheaply made in several reviews
  • Sticky action, and a throat seam that is not sealed
  • Shackle diameter and key count are not stated
  • One buyer returned them as light rubbish

Best for: Two separate staples where each lock can have its own key and the parcel can go back if it feels too light.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs one key for both locks, or a shackle diameter you can check before buying.

The listing claims a hardened steel shackle and does not give a diameter. The body is stated as 70 mm. There is no security grade.

ASelected 70 mm disc lock

Rank 9

ASelected 70 mm disc lock

Our view

The ASelected 70 mm lock is a stainless discus at £6.61, about 200 g and 25 mm deep, with a stated 10 mm shackle that is 27 mm long and 10 mm wide, and two keys. At 4.1 from 170 reviews, some buyers say it replaced a rusted lock, stayed easy to unlock, and has not rusted so far. Others call it fiddly, stubborn, and cheap-looking for a lock that photographs as heavy duty. Two locks opened by hand because the mechanism did not latch, which is the failure that matters on a shed door. The lock-type field says combination lock even though keys are supplied. The bullet says the key cannot be removed after unlocking and that you take it out once the lock is shut. There is no security grade in the file.

Pros

  • 70 mm stainless body at £6.61 with two keys
  • Stated 10 mm shackle, 27 mm long
  • 4.1 from 170 reviews, with some reports of no rust so far
  • Key-retaining behaviour is written on the listing

Cons

  • Two locks opened by hand because they did not latch
  • Fiddly and cheap-feeling in other reviews
  • Lock-type field says combination lock on a keyed product
  • No security grade in the file

Best for: A low-cost 70 mm body you can test on the staple inside the returns window, and return if it does not latch.

Less suitable: A shed you cannot check for a week, or any lock you need to trust without a trial close.

HORAN HOQI 70 mm disc lock

Rank 10

HORAN HOQI 70 mm disc lock

Our view

The HORAN HOQI listing uses a 70 mm stainless discus title at £4.69, the lowest price in this scrape, with 4.0 from two reviews. The single UK review says it arrived on time and the keys worked, and that all the keys fitted both locks the buyer had ordered, which they did not treat as proper unique keying. The listing’s 10 g weight and 10 mm cube conflict with a 70 mm lock and are not the real size. The included-components field is the number 11, not a parts list, and the key count is not stated. Hardened steel, waterproof, and rustproof appear as claims only. Two reviews are not enough to treat the 4.0 as a settled rating for a shed.

Pros

  • Lowest price in this set at £4.69
  • Title describes a 70 mm stainless discus
  • The one UK review says the keys worked on arrival

Cons

  • Only two reviews, and one UK text
  • 10 g and a 10 mm cube conflict with the 70 mm title
  • Included-components field is the number 11
  • Keys fitted both locks in that review, with no unique keying

Best for: Almost nothing you would leave on a shed until a later listing states a real weight, a key count, and more than two reviews.

Less suitable: Any outdoor door, gate, or storage latch you cannot afford to find open.

Yale Y112/40

Rank 11

Yale Y112/40

Our view

The Yale Y112/40/124/1 is a 40 mm nickel-plated iron disc at £7.44, with a 7 mm shackle and more room than the 70 mm locks: 24.8 mm of vertical clearance and 20 mm of horizontal clearance. At 3.6 from 77 reviews it is the weak star rating among the named brands in this set. Some buyers call it strong and easy on an outside gate, and one liked the unusual key. A plumber’s review says the keys failed after about a month on tube racks and took many tries to turn, and other buyers call the keys thin. The key will not come out while the lock is open. The bullets say it was tested to EN 12320:2012 and do not state the grade reached, and the item dimensions disagree with the 40 × 33 × 21 mm body in the bullets.

Pros

  • 40 mm body at £7.44 with three keys
  • More clearance than the 70 mm locks: 24.8 mm by 20 mm
  • Bought for an outside gate by some reviewers
  • Bullets name an EN 12320:2012 test, though no grade

Cons

  • 3.6 from 77 reviews
  • 7 mm shackle, under the 10 mm rule of thumb
  • Keys failed after about a month in one trade review
  • Key cannot be removed while the padlock is open

Best for: A small staple that a 70 mm discus will not close on, if a 7 mm shackle is acceptable and you do not need a named grade.

Less suitable: A shed policy that points at Grade 3, or daily use where a sticky key would lock you out.

Common questions

Is the Yale Y112 sold for outdoor use?

The listing uses outdoor and corrosion wording, and some buyers used it on an outside gate. A trade review says the keys failed after about a month. The 7 mm shackle is under a 10 mm rule of thumb.

How many keys does the Y112 include?

The listing states three keys. A United Kingdom review says the key cannot be removed while the padlock is open.

Does the Y112 have an EN 12320 grade?

The bullets say it was tested to EN 12320:2012. They do not state the grade reached. That sentence is not a pass at Grade 3 or any other grade.

OGMBI discus locks, 6 pack

Rank 12

OGMBI discus locks, 6 pack

∼£23

Our view

The OGMBI pack is six round discus locks and 12 keys at £22.99, listed at 1.18 kg, sold with a keyed-alike claim. At 2.8 from 13 reviews it is the lowest score in this set. One buyer says one key opens all six and calls the price reasonable when that is true. Several UK reviewers say the locks are not keyed alike and call the claim false information. The body and shackle are described as light, with play in the shackle, and a review says there is no notch in the shackle toe. A waterproof claim is answered in a review as water resistance at best. You would only keep the pack after trying every lock with one key inside the returns window.

Pros

  • Six locks and 12 keys in one parcel at £22.99
  • One buyer reports that a single key opened all six
  • Price called reasonable when the keys do match
  • Round discus shape, if the bodies feel solid in the hand

Cons

  • 2.8 from 13 reviews
  • Several UK reviewers say the locks are not keyed alike
  • Light body and shackle play, with no notch in the toe
  • Waterproof claim read by a reviewer as water resistance at best

Best for: A trial only if you can test all six locks with one key before you rely on them.

Less suitable: A landlord or a row of sheds that needs one key to be true on the day they arrive.

Common questions

Is the OGMBI six-pack sold for outdoor use?

The listing makes a waterproof claim. A review reads that as water resistance at best. The body and shackle are described as light, with play in the shackle.

Are the six OGMBI locks keyed alike?

The title says they are, with 12 keys. Several United Kingdom reviewers say they are not. One buyer says one key opened all six. Test every lock before you rely on the claim.

What shackle does the OGMBI pack state?

The listing does not state a shackle diameter. A review says there is no notch in the shackle toe. The pack is listed at 1.18 kg for six locks and 12 keys.

How we compared

Twelve amazon.co.uk disc-padlock listings were scored from the pages stored on 19 October 2026 and from the public UK sources below. There is no laboratory test. The card score starts from the star rating, then comes down when few reviews sit behind it, or when the only United Kingdom review text is a single note under a large aggregate. A stated body size and a shackle you can measure rank above a title that conflicts with its own weight. A maker’s score out of 10, or ABUS level 7, is not treated as a BS EN 12320 grade, and a test sentence that omits the grade reached is not a pass. Points also come off for rust in harsh outdoor use, keys that snap or fail, a mechanism that does not latch, a keyed-alike claim that UK reviews deny, and a review count printed on two packs. Two listings at the same score are split by review volume and by whether the spec lines agree. The weights below sum to 100. They show that emphasis. They are not a second formula.

1

Amazon star rating

35%

The star line on the amazon.co.uk page for that ASIN. A high star line with a thin review count does not outrank a similar line with a much larger sample.

2

Review sample

20%

A deduction when few reviews sit behind the stars, when only one United Kingdom text is on file under a large aggregate, or when two packs print the same review count.

3

Stated size

25%

Whether the listing states a body size and a shackle you can measure. A 70 mm discus with a stated clearance ranks above a title that conflicts with its own weight.

4

Grade and failures

20%

A maker’s 8/10 or level 7 is not a BS EN 12320 grade. Rust, snapped keys, a lock that does not latch, and a keyed-alike claim that UK reviews deny are deducted.

Disc padlock buying guide

Work down the list in order: whether the staple will take the throat, then shackle thickness, then whether a grade is actually printed. A star line does not turn 8/10 into CEN 3, and a shared 1,800-review count is not two separate samples.

What is a disc padlock?

A disc padlock is a keyed padlock with a round, flat body. The shackle is short and sits in the rim, which is why the shape is also called a discus or a closed-shackle lock. Bolt croppers have little steel to grip. That is the reason to choose it over an open shackle on a shed hasp, a garden-gate staple or a storage-unit latch. It is not a defence against an angle grinder, and it does not replace a lock on a home’s final exit door.

Best for

  • A shed, gate or storage latch where a closed shackle is the shape you need
  • A basic garden gate, if you can return a cheap lock that does not close

Not ideal for

  • A thick chain, which usually needs an open shackle instead of a discus throat
  • A contract that names a CEN grade or Sold Secure mark these listings do not print

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Reading 8/10 as a CEN grade

Master Lock 8/10 and 9/10, and ABUS level 7, are house scales. BS EN 12320 grades run from 1 to 6. The Yale Y112 mentions an EN 12320:2012 test and does not state the grade reached. A test line without the grade is not a pass.

  2. 2

    Ordering before you measure

A discus throat is short. The ABUS 220/70 states 17 mm by 19.5 mm of clearance. The Yale Y112 states 24.8 mm by 20 mm and a 7 mm shackle. A thick chain often will not pass. If the bolt is thicker than the opening, the lock will not close.

  3. 3

    Trusting a keyed-alike title

The OGMBI six-pack says one key for six locks. Several United Kingdom reviewers say that is not true. One buyer did report a match. Try every lock inside the returns window. The XiangJunly pair is not sold as keyed alike, and a UK review says the keys do not match.

What to weigh up

Fit and shackle

High

Measure the staple or the latch before you compare stars. A discus throat is short. Master Lock’s M40 and M187 state the shackle as about 1 × 1.6 × 2.1 cm. The ABUS 220/70 states 17 mm of clear height and 19.5 mm of clear width, with a 10 mm shackle. The Yale Y112 states 24.8 mm by 20 mm of clearance and a 7 mm shackle: more room, less cropping resistance. The Yale Y130B prints 0 mm of clearance and a weight of 115 g, which is not credible for a body around 74 mm.

Weather, keys and grade

High

Covered keyways and stainless bodies are what these listings advertise for outdoor use. They are claims. On the Master Lock M40, a beach-hut review says the lock rusted solid within about a year and the key bent. Waterproof on a budget title is not a promise that the cylinder will survive salt air. Key retaining, where the key stays in until the lock is shut, is stated on the Master Lock pages, on ASelected, and in a Yale Y112 review. Some buyers use it as a check that the lock is closed.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

A shed or gate staple

You can measure the staple, and a 70 mm discus with a hidden shackle is the shape you want. The Burg-Wächter Circle 21 70 SB is the top pick at about £7.45, with 4.6 from 909 reviews. Check the shackle, which the listing gives as both 9 mm and 10 mm, and do not read the price as a printed CEN grade.

A basic garden gate

The staple is ordinary, the lock can go back if the throat misses, and you are not securing a shed full of tools. The QWORK one-pack is the best value at about £5.99, score 86. Reviews describe a light folded body. The 1,800-review figure matches the two-pack, so do not treat it as 1,800 buyers of this pack alone.

A storage-unit latch

The latch accepts a short shrouded shackle, and you want more than a budget plate. The Master Lock M40EURD is about £13.95, with a covered keyway, four keys, and 4.4 from 1,051 reviews. It is a poor choice in salt air: one beach-hut review says it rusted solid within about a year.

Common questions about disc padlocks

Which disc padlock is the top pick in 2026?
The top pick is the Burg-Wächter Circle 21 70 SB at about £7.45. It has the joint highest score, with 4.6 from 909 amazon.co.uk reviews. The Yale Y130B matches 4.6 from only 33 reviews at about £23.86, and its listing conflicts, so it is not the first buy. Only one United Kingdom review text is on file for the Burg-Wächter, and the shackle line says both 9 mm and 10 mm. No CEN grade is stated.
Which disc padlock is the best value?
The best value is the QWORK one-pack at about £5.99, with a score of 86 for a basic gate lock. The listing shows 4.3 from 1,800 reviews, the same count as the two-pack, so do not add those figures. Reviews describe a light folded body that wants oil, and the shackle diameter is not stated. It suits a garden-gate staple you can return if the throat does not close.
How much does a disc padlock cost on amazon.co.uk?
On 19 October 2026 the twelve shelf prices ran from about £4.69 for the HORAN HOQI title to about £23.86 for the Yale Y130B. Entry locks sit under about £10, including Burg-Wächter at about £7.45 and the QWORK one-pack at about £5.99. Master Lock’s M187 and M40 are about £13.93 and about £13.95. The ABUS 220/70 is about £19.60. The OGMBI six-pack is about £22.99. These are stored listing prices, not a market average.
Is a maker’s 8/10 the same as EN 12320?
No. BS EN 12320:2021 grades padlocks from 1 to 6. Sold Secure Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond map roughly to CEN grades 3, 4, 5 and 6. Master Lock 8/10 or 9/10, and ABUS level 7 on the 220/70, are the makers’ own scales. The Yale Y112 bullets say the lock was tested to EN 12320:2012 and do not state the grade reached. A test line without the grade is not a pass.
How thick should the shackle be?
Measure the staple, then the shackle. Collections Trust’s rule of thumb is that under 10 mm has little cropping resistance. ABUS 220/70 and ASelected state 10 mm. Master Lock states about 1 × 1.6 × 2.1 cm. Yale Y112 states 7 mm, with 24.8 mm by 20 mm of clearance. Burg-Wächter says 9 mm in one line and 10 mm in another. A thicker bolt or chain will not pass the throat.
Can you trust a keyed-alike disc padlock pack?
Do not treat the OGMBI six-pack as keyed alike. The title says six locks and 12 keys on one key, at about £22.99, but several UK reviewers say the locks are not keyed alike. The listing is 2.8 from 13 reviews. One buyer did report that a single key opened all six. Test every lock inside the returns window before you rely on the pack. The XiangJunly pair’s UK review says those two locks do not share a key either.
Does a disc padlock replace a house-door lock?
No. A discus shields a short shackle on a gate, a shed or a storage latch. It does not replace a lock on a home’s final exit. Call a locksmith or a carpenter if the timber is rotten, a steel gate needs welding, the only key has snapped in the plug, or the contract names a grade you cannot see on the box. Other padlock shapes are in the padlock comparison.

Our verdict

The top pick is the Burg-Wächter Circle 21 70 SB at about £7.45. It shares the highest score in this set, 4.6 from 909 amazon.co.uk reviews, and the shackle sits in the rim. The same score on the Yale Y130B rests on 33 reviews at about £23.86, with listing lines that disagree, so that lock is not the first buy. The best value is the QWORK one-pack at about £5.99. The method gives it the value badge because the score is 86 and the price is a basic gate lock you can return if it does not close. The two-pack prints the same 1,800-review count and does not take that badge. None of these listings is a named CEN grade or Sold Secure.
