Disc padlock for a shed and gate

Updated: October 2026

You are locking a wooden shed, a garden gate or a storage latch, and a round lock looks like the obvious buy. A disc padlock for a shed is the right shape when the staple is short and nobody has asked for a printed grade. It is the wrong shape for a thick chain. Prices from about £4.69 to about £23.86, stored on 19 October 2026, are on the [disc padlock comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/disc-padlock). Coach-bolt steps stay on [how to fit a disc padlock](/hub/door-and-window-security/disc-padlock/sub/disc-padlock-how-to-fit). Peter F. used those listings and UK police notes, not a lab. A shed door needs two hasps, not one clever lock

ProtectUK asks for two hasps on a wooden shed door, high and low, with closed-shackle padlocks and hinge screws you cannot undo from outside. Suffolk, West Lothian, Lichfield and Kelvedon say the same. Lichfield also mentions Sold Secure. None of these listings shows that mark. A 70 mm body is the common size. The ABUS 220/70 states a 10 mm shackle and only 17 mm of clear height. Master Lock’s M40 and M187 are the locks reviewers put on shed bolts. The Yale Y112, 40 mm and a 7 mm shackle, is the small-staple compromise, at 3.6 from 77 reviews. The top pick, the Burg-Wächter Circle 21, is a 70 mm body whose shackle line says both 9 mm and 10 mm.

A garden gate is a clearance problem

A garden gate with a short hasp is the shed job on a smaller piece of timber. The gate and the post have to meet without a bow that holds the hasp open. QWORK reviews talk about gates at a low price, with a light body that wants oil. That can keep a dog in, which is why the one-pack is the best value. It is a weak choice when the gate is the only thing between a lane and a shed full of tools. A UK review found the Burg-Wächter 70 mm tight on a motorcycle chain. If the gate is already chained, that is the open-shackle case on discus padlock vs open shackle. A steel gate with no staple is a fabricator’s job.

Storage units already expect a round lock

Hold Storage describes disc locks as the usual lock for a unit, because croppers cannot get around the body. A UK review on the Master Lock M40 said the site wanted a cylindrical lock. That is a pattern, not a rule that every site demands a discus. Read the unit’s note. Do not drill a rented door. The ABUS clearance of about 17 mm by 19.5 mm is a check against a domestic hasp. A storage latch can be tighter. Master Lock’s key retaining means you cannot walk off until the latch is shut. The Burg-Wächter and QWORK listings do not say whether the key is retained.

Coast, cold and a named grade

Stainless on these listings is not a marine grade. A Master Lock M40 rusted solid on a beach hut within about a year. One M187 review still called the coated body rust-resistant after almost two years. An ABUS buyer had no rust so far and said it was early. Oil the lock and replace it when the key starts to fight. Master Lock’s 8/10 and ABUS level 7 are not BS EN 12320 grades. The Master Locksmiths Association points outbuildings at Grade 3 fittings as guidance. If the site names that grade or Sold Secure, this set does not meet the line unless the mark is on the product.

Common questions

Is a disc padlock right for a wooden shed?
Yes, when you fit two closed-shackle hasps, high and low, and the staple accepts a short shackle. A 70 mm body is the usual size in this set. The lock does not replace coach bolts, hinge screws, or a separate lock on the tools inside.
Do I need two locks on a shed?
Police guidance wants two hasps on a wooden shed door, one high and one low. One discus in the middle leaves the door free to twist. Two locks also means two staples you have measured, and keys you can tell apart unless you have tested a keyed-alike claim.
Will it fit a garden-gate hasp?
It will if the staple is as short as a shed staple. It will not if the gate is held by a thick chain or a tall loop. QWORK’s light locks turn up on gates in reviews. A tool store behind that gate deserves a heavier, better documented 70 mm body.
What size do storage units want?
Many latches are made for a round disc lock, and one UK review was told to bring a cylindrical lock. Measure the latch the site fitted. Do not assume every warehouse uses the same opening, and do not drill a rented door to make a 70 mm body fit.
Can I lock a gate chain with a discus?
Usually no. The Burg-Wächter review found a motorcycle chain tight and fiddly, and the ABUS 220/70 only offers about 17 mm of clear height. A chain is the reason to leave this shape. A short hasp on the same gate can still take a discus.
What if the site or the policy names a grade?
A closed-shackle discus meets a closed-shackle sentence. It meets CEN Grade 3 or Sold Secure only when that mark is printed on the lock. None of these listings shows that mark. Maker scores out of 10 do not fill the gap.
