Doorknob comparison 2026

The best doorknobs, compared.

Top pick: Brotima satin nickel dummy knob Best value: Sterling SRL8BK black rim pair – About £6.99 for a rim-lock pair with 4.2 from 284 reviews. Small knobs and a plastic-versus-metal split in the reviews keep it below the chrome pair. It is furniture for an existing rim lock, not a BS 3621 lock. Updated October 2026.

A doorknob on amazon.co.uk is the round furniture you turn to pull a latch back, or a dummy you only pull. It is not the lock that secures a UK front door. Buyers here are usually replacing knobs on an internal timber door, a rim lock, a bathroom door or a shed, and the set has to match the ironmongery already in the leaf. A useful set turns without a fight and takes the spindle the latch already uses, often 8 mm. Round knobs need more hand clearance than levers, so a short backset leaves your knuckles on the frame. A keyed ball knob is a light entry set, not evidence of BS 3621. The order of those checks is the [doorknob buying guide](/hub/door-and-window-security/doorknob/sub/doorknob-buying-guide). Approved Document Q in England points new dwelling doorsets at those lock standards, or the matching documents, for the lock.

A doorknob on amazon.co.uk is the round furniture you turn to pull a latch back, or a dummy you only pull. It is not the lock that secures a UK front door.

The best doorknobs in detail

Brotima satin nickel dummy knob

Rank 1

Brotima satin nickel dummy knob

∼£12

Our view

This satin nickel Brotima is one half-side dummy, 53.3 mm across, at about £12.31 and 150 g. The listing says it does not rotate and that it has no latch and no lock, so it is a pull for a door that already stays shut. Eight amazon.co.uk reviews give it 4.8, but only three review texts are on the listing. Two of those mention packaging and a simple fit. The critical one says the knob blocks the screwdriver, so the screw goes in at an angle and the instruction drawing does not match the fitting. A 72-hour salt-spray line is printed, with no test report linked. Eight reviews is too small a record to treat 4.8 as a settled score for the category.

Pros

  • Stated as a dummy: one side, does not turn, no latch
  • Satin nickel, 53.3 mm knob and 65 mm rose
  • 150 g, listed for indoor use
  • Mounting hardware and instructions are named

Cons

  • Only eight reviews, and three review texts on the listing
  • Knob blocks a straight screwdriver
  • Does not latch or lock the door
  • One half only, so the other face stays bare

Best for: A fixed pull on a pantry, hallway, or double door that already closes another way.

Less suitable: Any door that must latch, lock, or be turned from both sides.

Common questions

Will this latch a door?

No. The listing says there is no lock, no latch, and the knob does not rotate. It is a pull.

Is it a pair?

The title says one half side only. Number of items is 1.

Does it come with instructions?

The bullets say mounting hardware and clear instructions. One of the three reviews says the instructions do not match the fact that the knob blocks the screwdriver.

Infinity Georgian brass knobs, 50 mm

Rank 2

Infinity Georgian brass knobs, 50 mm

∼£23

Our view

The Infinity SB2119PB.03 is a heavy-sprung solid brass Georgian pair, 50 mm, at about £22.95 and 540 g. Nineteen reviews give it 4.6, and buyers describe real brass rather than a plated copy, often bought to replace plastic knobs on a Victorian door. The box is the pair, a spindle, and screws. A tubular latch is not included. One reviewer had to file an oversized spindle before it entered the knobs. The return is strong enough that a household member could not open the door, and those knobs came off again. The bullets mention interior and exterior use because of a corrosion claim, while the attribute field says indoor. Nineteen reviews is a short record for a spring this fierce.

Pros

  • Solid brass, 50 mm, listed at 540 g
  • Heavy sprung, for a latch you already have
  • 4.6 from 19 reviews on a period look
  • Spindle and fixing screws in the box

Cons

  • Spring too strong for at least one household
  • Spindle had to be filed before it fitted
  • No latch included
  • Only 19 reviews, and indoor versus exterior is split on the listing

Best for: A period internal door with a working latch, where a heavy brass knob and a strong return are what you want.

Less suitable: A weak grip, a child, or a door that has no latch in the edge.

Common questions

What diameter are the knobs?

The title says 50 mm. Projection on the listing is 6.3 cm and the weight is 540 g.

Is the latch included?

The box is a pair, a spindle, and fixing screws. The bullets say the knobs can be used with a tubular latch, a mortice sashlock, or a bathroom mortice lock. Those are not listed as included.

Are they sprung?

Yes. The listing says heavy sprung. A review says the return was strong enough that a household member could not open the door.

Amig black zamak knob, 75 mm

Rank 3

Amig black zamak knob, 75 mm

Our view

The Amig model 16 is one matte black zamak knob, 75 mm in diameter and 80 mm of projection on the bullets, at about £8.28 and 296 g. It is a single pull with a rear fixing nut. The listing does not describe a second knob, a spindle, or a latch. Across 378 reviews it is 4.5, though most of the 50 texts in the sample are not marked United Kingdom. UK comments that do appear call the price and the size reasonable for a front-door pull. One UK buyer returned it because a hole has to go through the door, which is easy to miss if you expected three surface screws. The dimensions field says 80 × 75 cm, which conflicts with the millimetre bullets. Handing is printed as right, without an explanation of what that means on a pull.

Pros

  • Single 75 mm rustic pull at about £8.28
  • 4.5 from 378 reviews
  • Rear fixing nut named on the listing
  • Listed for outdoor rustic doors

Cons

  • One knob, with no latch and no second side
  • Through-door hole surprised a UK buyer
  • Centimetre dimensions conflict with the 75 mm bullets
  • Most sampled reviews are not marked United Kingdom

Best for: A rustic pull on a door that already locks another way, once you have accepted a hole through the leaf.

Less suitable: A two-sided mortice pair, or a surface-screw rose with no through hole.

Common questions

Is this a pair?

Number of items is 1. The bullets describe one knob, a rose, and a rear fixing nut. They do not describe a spindle or a second knob.

Does it come with a lock?

No. The listing does not describe a latch or a key.

Which size should you trust?

The bullets say 75 mm diameter and 80 mm projection. The dimensions field says 80 × 75 cm. Those centimetre figures conflict with the bullets.

Infinity Victorian brass knobs, 52 mm

Rank 4

Infinity Victorian brass knobs, 52 mm

∼£17

Our view

The Infinity SB2114PB.01 is a Victorian pair in solid brass: a 52 mm knob, a 60 mm rose, and a spindle printed as 125 × 8 mm, at about £16.95 and 420 g. Forty reviews sit at 4.5. Reviewers call the brass solid and right on a period door, including one worn front door. The return is the complaint that repeats: it is stiff before and after fitting, and on a bathroom door people were stuck until the door was dealt with. One buyer pulled the springs out with circlip pliers because the latch was already sprung. Flat-head screws sit under a rose that hides the heads. There is no latch in the box, so this is sprung furniture for an 8 mm follower.

Pros

  • Solid brass Victorian pair at about £16.95
  • Spindle stated as 125 × 8 mm
  • 52 mm knob, 4.5 from 40 reviews
  • Heavy sprung and ambidextrous

Cons

  • Spring too strong, including on a bathroom door
  • Rose hides the flat-head screws
  • No latch in the box
  • Uncomfortable with osteoarthritis in one review

Best for: A period internal door with an 8 mm latch, if everyone who uses it can turn a heavy spring.

Less suitable: A bathroom where someone might be stuck, a weak grip, or a door with no latch.

Common questions

What spindle is printed?

The bullets say 125 × 8 mm. Knob diameter is 52 mm, rose 60 mm, projection 60 mm.

Does it include a lock?

No. The contents are a pair, a spindle, and screws. The bullets say to use it with a tubular latch, mortice sashlock, or bathroom mortice lock.

Why do reviews mention stiffness?

Several reviews say the knobs are solid brass and the return spring is very strong, including on a bathroom door where people were stuck.

CML keyed entry ball set

Rank 5

CML keyed entry ball set

Our view

The CML 6006-ET-SS is a keyed ball set at about £7.90, with three keys and an adjustable latch for doors 35–45 mm thick and backsets of 60–70 mm. Across 3,564 reviews it sits at 4.3, and buyers whose old holes already match often finish in about 20 minutes. Some boxes include every piece. Others arrive without instructions, with a missing strike, or with keys that are tight in the keyway. Reviews describe the latch sticking open, and an inside button that will not lock until the cylinder and button are aligned. The listing prints ANSI Grade 3 and a three-year finish and mechanical line. It does not print BS 3621. It is a light keyed knob for a storeroom, shed, or internal door.

Pros

  • Latch, three keys, and a stated 60–70 mm backset
  • 4.3 from 3,564 reviews
  • About £7.90 for a complete keyed set
  • Ambidextrous, stated for doors 35–45 mm thick

Cons

  • Latch sticking open, and a strike called flimsy
  • Inside button that fails until the cylinder is lined up
  • ANSI Grade 3 is a US grade, not BS 3621
  • Coastal reviews report screws rusting within months

Best for: A light keyed knob on a shed, storeroom, or internal door where a certified lock is not required.

Less suitable: A final exit, a policy that asks for BS 3621, or a door outside 35–45 mm.

Which doors does the listing name?

The title says exterior and interior. The usage line says bedroom door and entrance door. The latch is stated for doors 35–45 mm thick and backsets of 60–70 mm.

Handlestore polished chrome sprung pair

Rank 6

Handlestore polished chrome sprung pair

∼£11

Our view

Across 1,210 amazon.co.uk reviews, this polished chrome pair is sprung mortice furniture for internal wooden doors, listed at about £10.99 and ranked 1 in Doorknobs. Reviewers who can turn it describe a high-polish look and a smooth action once it is on, and one timed the fit at about five minutes when the old holes matched. The knob stays on the rose, so the screwdriver meets the screw at an angle and the chrome gets scratched. The return is often too strong for a child, an older person, or wet hands, especially when the latch is sprung as well. The box is knobs and fixings: one review says the latch was not supplied, and other boxes were short a spindle or a usable screw. It replaces chrome knobs on a door that already latches.

Pros

  • Sprung mortice pair at about £10.99, rank 1 in Doorknobs
  • 4.2 from 1,210 reviews, with the sample marked United Kingdom
  • Polished chrome that buyers compare with a dearer shop pair
  • Fits internal wooden doors when a latch is already fitted

Cons

  • Knob blocks the screws and marks the chrome
  • Spring too strong for a child or a weak grip
  • Latch not named in the box; some boxes missing the spindle
  • Listing limits it to indoor use

Best for: Replacing sprung chrome knobs on an internal timber door that already has a working latch, if everyone who uses it can turn a strong spring.

Less suitable: A child, arthritis, or wet hands, and any door whose latch has already failed.

Common questions

Does this pair include a latch?

The included-components line names installation hardware. It does not name a latch. A review says the latch was not supplied, so the door would not stay shut without the old latch.

Is it sprung?

The title and the listing say sprung, with a spring-loaded latch attachment. Reviews describe a strong return, sometimes too strong for a child or a weak grip.

Can it be used on an outside door?

The indoor/outdoor field says indoor, and the bullets describe internal wooden doors. No weatherproof claim is answered as a yes.

Coolty black round set

Rank 7

Coolty black round set

∼£14

Our view

The Coolty BM105 is a black round set at about £14.49, rated 4.2 from 455 reviews and ranked 8 in Doorknobs. The title says keyless passage, while the lock-type field says key lock, the included parts name a lock body with a cap, and reviews describe keys, including one set that arrived with none. The bullets say doors of 35–45 mm and a latch adjustable to 60 mm or 70 mm. The indoor field says indoor, while the bullets also say internal or external. Reviewers report play in the knob, a stiff lock, finish that chips, and knobs that came off the mechanism during fitting. Until the box is open, the listing does not settle whether this pack locks. ANSI Grade 3 is printed, and that grade is not BS 3621.

Pros

  • 4.2 from 455 reviews, rank 8 in Doorknobs
  • Stated for 35–45 mm doors and a 60 or 70 mm backset
  • An adjustable latch is described on the bullets
  • Matte black round set at about £14.49

Cons

  • Title says passage and the spec line says a key lock
  • Play, stiff keys, and knobs that came off during fitting
  • Black coating chipping in reviews
  • ANSI Grade 3 is not a UK lock mark

Best for: A 35–45 mm door only after the box in your hand shows whether this set is passage or keyed.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs the listing alone to say whether the door locks, or a certified final exit.

What doors does it state?

The bullets say internal or external doors 35–45 mm thick, with the latch adjustable to 60 mm or 70 mm. The indoor/outdoor field says indoor.

Sterling SRL8BK black rim pair

Rank 8

Sterling SRL8BK black rim pair

Our view

At about £6.99, the Sterling SRL8BK is a 45 mm black powder-coated pair for rim locks and rim sashlocks, rated 4.2 from 284 reviews. Buyers use it to replace a broken shed, garage, or internal rim knob when the old holes line up, and one review says the spindle fitted a 7 mm sash rim lock. The knobs and roses are smaller than many people expect. Two reviewers say the set is plastic and one returned it, while others call it metal. Screws are described as tiny, loose, or silver rather than black, and one pack had a single backing plate. The listing is furniture for an existing rim lock. It does not print BS 3621.

Pros

  • About £6.99 rim pair with a spindle and fixing screws named
  • 45 mm knobs that match some old shed fittings
  • Ten-year materials warranty printed on the listing
  • 4.2 from 284 reviews for a cheap rim replacement

Cons

  • Knobs and roses called small
  • Two reviews say plastic rather than steel
  • Tiny screws and, in one pack, only one backing plate
  • Made for a rim lock, so it will not sit on a mortice latch

Best for: Replacing knobs on a rim lock or rim sashlock on an internal door, shed, or garage when the holes already match.

Less suitable: A mortice latch, or a large metal knob expected to live outside for years.

The bullets say a pair with a spindle and fixing screws. The included-components line names knobs. Reviews mention tiny screws and, in one case, only one backing plate.

The listing does not print 7 mm or 8 mm. One review says this set fitted a 7 mm spindle sash rim lock.

XFORT mushroom knobs, matt antique brass

Rank 9

XFORT mushroom knobs, matt antique brass

∼£20

Our view

The XFORT mushroom pair is matt antique brass mortice furniture at about £19.99, supplied with a spindle and face screws and with no latch in the box. Across 30 reviews it is 4.2, and several of those texts describe other finishes of the same mushroom shape. Buyers who get it on praise the weight and the Victorian look on an internal wooden door. The square bar is repeatedly a fraction too thick, so people file it or buy a 7 mm spindle. One set arrived with rusty screws and a rusty centre rod, and the screws were too soft for solid hardwood. The mushroom covers the screw heads, so they go in at an angle. The listing does not say the pair is sprung, though one review of the design mentions spring action.

Pros

  • Mushroom shape in matt antique brass
  • Spindle and surface screws named in the box
  • Ambidextrous, for interior wooden doors
  • Solid feel once the spindle actually fits

Cons

  • Spindle often too thick and has to be filed
  • Rusty or soft screws in reviews
  • Mushroom covers the screw heads
  • No latch in the box

Best for: A Victorian internal door that already has a latch and will accept a slightly thick spindle.

Less suitable: Hardwood that needs tough screws, an exterior door, or a door with no latch.

Common questions

Do these knobs include a lock?

No. The included parts are a spindle and surface-mounted screws. The bullets describe interior door knobs, not a lock.

Can they go on an exterior door?

The indoor/outdoor field says indoor, and the bullets say interior wooden doors.

What do the reviews say about the spindle?

Reviews say the square bar was slightly too thick for the knobs, and that screws and the centre rod arrived rusty on one set.

Yale brass bathroom knob set

Rank 10

Yale brass bathroom knob set

∼£15

Our view

The Yale YKS-BAT-B is a polished brass bathroom knob set at about £14.89 for interior doors 35–45 mm thick, with a stated backset of 60–70 mm and a 51 mm rose. Twenty reviews give it 4.0. The reviews describe a like-for-like bathroom swap in about 20 minutes, including one that matched the screw pattern of a 35-year-old fitting. The finish is duller than the photographs, and the projection and stem do not match 20-year-old knobs of a similar diameter. The action is a little clunkier than the original those buyers removed. The listing names a deadlock latch bolt and a fixings pack. It does not describe an outside emergency release, so a coin slot is not something you can assume is in the box.

Pros

  • Bathroom set with a deadlock latch bolt named
  • Stated 60–70 mm backset and 35–45 mm doors
  • Like-for-like fit in about 20 minutes in reviews
  • Ambidextrous, rose 51 mm

Cons

  • Finish duller than the photographs
  • Stem and projection differ from older knobs
  • Only 20 reviews, at 4.0
  • Outside emergency release is not described

Best for: Replacing a brass bathroom knob on a 35–45 mm internal door after you have checked how the door opens from the landing.

Less suitable: A household that needs a confirmed outside release, or a match to a shiny 20-year-old knob.

Does the listing describe an outside emergency release?

No. It names a deadlock latch bolt and a fixings pack. It does not describe a coin release.

What backset does it state?

Adjustable backset 60–70 mm, rose diameter 51 mm, and it says the set suits left- and right-handed doors.

Unbranded resin flower knob

Rank 11

Unbranded resin flower knob

Our view

The unbranded resin knob is listed at about £5.12, about 4.8 cm across, and 87 g. The amazon.co.uk listing has no star rating and no review text, so there is no buyer record of it turning a latch. The title calls it a smooth-turning door knob for bedrooms and similar rooms, and a bullet also says it blends with cabinets. Included components say refer to the description: no spindle, screws, or latch is named. The listing says indoor and not weight bearing, with a rank of 490 in Doorknobs. At this price it is a decorative resin pull. Nothing on the listing shows that it operates a UK door latch.

Pros

  • Listed at about £5.12, about 4.8 cm
  • Resin, and the indoor field says indoor
  • Light, at 87 g
  • Ranked in Doorknobs, at 490

Cons

  • No star rating and no reviews on the listing
  • No spindle, screws, or latch named
  • Bullets also mention cabinets
  • Described as not weight bearing

Best for: A light indoor decorative knob where you do not need a latch and you can check the fixing on the door.

Less suitable: Any door that must latch, or a cupboard if you wanted a cabinet knob with a stated screw.

How we compared

Scores use the eleven amazon.co.uk listings on this page and the UK review notes already captured for them. There was no lab test. Stars and review counts are the UK figures on those listings. The weights below sum to 100. The highest score is the top pick. The best value is the Sterling rim pair: about £6.99, 4.2 from 284 reviews, for a clear rim-lock job, kept off the top by small knobs and a plastic-versus-metal split. A knob with a key is not scored as a BS 3621 front-door lock. ANSI Grade 3 on a listing is not treated as a British Kitemark or a fire rating.

1

Review record

25%

The amazon.co.uk star rating, then a deduction when few UK reviews sit behind it. Eight reviews at 4.8 do not outrank 1,210 reviews at 4.2. No star rating is a deduction.

2

Job match

25%

Whether the set matches one job: a mortice pair, a rim pair, a keyed latch set, a bathroom set, a dummy, or a single pull. A knob sold for cabinets as well as doors is marked down.

3

Box contents

20%

Whether the box names the parts that job needs. A mortice pair without a latch is expected. A keyed set whose latch sticks, or a box that omits the spindle, is not.

4

Turning and fit

20%

Deductions for a stiff spring that stops a child or a weak grip, a spindle buyers have to file, screws the knob hides, or a plastic-versus-metal split in the reviews.

5

Listing consistency

10%

A listing that contradicts itself is marked down. ANSI Grade 3 is not scored as BS 3621 or as a fire rating. A keyed knob is not scored as a certified front-door lock.

Doorknob buying guide

Buy the set that matches the ironmongery already in the door, then check the spindle, the spring and who has to turn it. Finish comes after that. A high star rating on eight reviews does not outrank a large UK sample, and a key in the knob does not make it a BS 3621 lock. The eleven listings here run from a resin pull at about £5.12 to a Georgian brass pair at about £22.95.

What is a doorknob?

A doorknob is the round furniture you turn to pull a latch back, or a dummy you only pull. On a UK internal door it is usually a pair of roses and a spindle through a latch or sashlock that is already in the edge. It is not the lock an insurer means when a schedule names BS 3621, BS 8621 or BS 10621, and it is not a Secured by Design doorset. Approved Document Q in England points new dwelling doorsets at those lock standards, or the matching PAS documents, for the lock.

Best for

  • Replacing knobs on an internal timber door that already has a latch
  • A rim lock on a shed, garage or internal door when the holes match
  • A period door where solid brass is the point, and the grip can turn a heavy spring

Not ideal for

  • A final exit or a policy that asks for BS 3621
  • A child, a weak grip, or a route where BS 8300 applies
  • A door whose latch has failed, if the box has no latch

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Fitting a mortice pair and finding no latch

The Handlestore, both Infinity pairs and the XFORT mushroom knobs are mortice furniture. The latch is not in those boxes. If the old latch is dead, the door will not stay shut until you buy one.

  2. 2

Using a short latch with a round knob

Backset is the door edge to the spindle centre. Ironmongers often treat a 3 inch latch, about 57 mm, as a practical minimum for a round knob. A 2½ inch latch leaves knuckles on the architrave.

  3. 3

Treating a keyed knob as BS 3621

The CML set includes a key and a latch, and it prints ANSI Grade 3. That grade is not BS 3621, BS 8621, or a Secured by Design doorset. A knob with a key is not evidence those marks are met.

What to weigh up

Set type and what is in the box

High

Buy the set that matches the ironmongery already in the door, then check the box. A mortice pair is roses both sides and a spindle through a latch or sashlock. The Handlestore, both Infinity brass pairs and the XFORT mushroom knobs are mortice furniture, and the latch is not in those boxes. If the old latch is dead, you still need one. A rim pair, the Sterling SRL8BK, sits on a rim lock or rim sashlock and will not sit on a mortice latch.

Spindle, spring and who can turn it

High

UK door furniture is commonly made for an 8 mm square spindle. The Victorian Infinity pair prints 125 × 8 mm. The Sterling listing does not print 7 mm or 8 mm, and one review says that set fitted a 7 mm sash rim lock. The Georgian Infinity and the XFORT mushroom both drew reviews that the spindle was too thick and had to be filed. Backset is the door edge to the spindle centre.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Internal door, latch already fitted

You are replacing chrome knobs on an internal timber door and the latch still works. The Handlestore polished chrome pair is the top pick at about £10.99, with 4.2 from 1,210 reviews. It is sprung. Reviews say the spring is stiff and the knob hides the screws. The latch is not named in the box.

Rim lock on a shed or internal door

You are replacing knobs on a rim lock or rim sashlock, and the holes already line up. The Sterling SRL8BK is the best value at about £6.99, with 4.2 from 284 reviews. The knobs are 45 mm. Two reviews say plastic rather than steel. It will not sit on a mortice latch, and it does not print BS 3621.

Period door, solid brass

You want sprung brass on a period internal door that already has an 8 mm latch. The Infinity Victorian pair states a 125 × 8 mm spindle, a 52 mm knob, and about £16.95, with 4.5 from 40 reviews. The return is heavy, including on a bathroom door in the reviews, and there is no latch in the box.

Common questions about doorknobs

Which doorknob is the top pick in 2026?
The Handlestore polished chrome sprung pair is the top pick. It scores 86, the highest of these eleven amazon.co.uk listings, at about £10.99, with 4.2 from 1,210 reviews. It is sprung mortice furniture for internal wooden doors, and the latch is not named in the box. Reviews describe a stiff spring and screws the knob hides. Those points are already in the score. It suits a door that already latches, if everyone who uses it can turn a strong spring.
How much does a doorknob cost?
Shelf prices of the eleven kept listings run from about £5.12 to about £22.95. That is this slice, not a market average. Entry is about £5 to £10, including the Sterling rim pair at about £6.99 and the CML keyed set at about £7.90. The middle is about £11 to £17, including the Handlestore at about £10.99 and the Yale bathroom set at about £14.89. The upper end of this slice is about £20 to £23.
What should you check before you buy a doorknob?
Match the set to the ironmongery already in the door, then read the box. A mortice pair often has knobs, a spindle and screws, and no latch. A rim pair will not sit on a mortice latch. UK furniture is commonly made for an 8 mm spindle. Backset is the door edge to the spindle centre, and a short latch leaves knuckles on the frame. Check the spring, because two strong springs can stop a weak grip. Many listings quote 35–45 mm doors. Finish comes after those checks.
Is a keyed doorknob a BS 3621 lock?
No. A keyed ball knob is a light entry set. It is not BS 3621, BS 8621, BS 10621, or a Secured by Design doorset. Approved Document Q in England points new dwelling doorsets at those lock standards, or the matching PAS documents, for the lock. ANSI Grade 3 on a listing is a US grade, not a British Kitemark. If the door needs that lock, use the door lock comparison.
Should you buy mortice knobs or a rim pair?
A mortice pair uses roses both sides and a spindle through a latch in the door edge. A rim pair is for a surface rim lock, and one rose is often left off because that knob sits on the lock case. Here the Handlestore and the brass pairs are mortice furniture. The Sterling SRL8BK is the rim pair, at about £6.99. Fitting a mortice pair onto a rim lock, or the other way round, is the mismatch.
Are round knobs suitable if someone has a weak grip?
Round knobs need a grip that can turn them. Where Approved Document M applies, latch furniture should work one-handed with a closed fist, and the example is a lever. BS 8300 advises against spherical knobs. The Handlestore and both Infinity brass pairs are sprung, and reviews describe a return that is too strong for a child or a weak grip. A private bedroom is a different decision from a workplace route. Do not stack a knob spring on a sprung latch if someone may be stuck.
Does a bathroom knob include an outside release?
The usual UK privacy pattern has a thumb-turn inside and an outside release. The Yale YKS-BAT-B names a deadlock latch bolt and a fixings pack. It does not describe a coin release, so you cannot assume one is in the box. It is stated for interior doors 35–45 mm thick, with a backset of 60–70 mm, at about £14.89. Twenty reviews give it 4.0, and the finish is duller than the photographs.
When should you call a locksmith?
Call a joiner or a Master Locksmiths Association locksmith for a fire door, a final exit, or a lock case with a different footprint. Fire performance belongs to the doorset test, not the knob, and a knob spring is not a door closer to BS EN 1154. A keyed knob does not show that an insurer will accept the door. If the old latch is a different size, or the spindle will not enter the follower, stop and measure before you drill new holes.

Our verdict

The Handlestore polished chrome sprung pair is the top pick. It has the highest score of these eleven amazon.co.uk listings, 86, at about £10.99, with 4.2 from 1,210 reviews, for an internal door that already has a latch. A stiff spring and hidden screws are already in that score. The Sterling SRL8BK is the best value at about £6.99, a 45 mm rim pair with 4.2 from 284 reviews. Small knobs and a plastic-versus-metal split keep it off the top. A keyed knob in this set is not BS 3621.

Sterling SRL8BK black rim pair

About £6.99 for a rim-lock pair with 4.2 from 284 reviews. Small knobs and a plastic-versus-metal split in the reviews keep it below the chrome pair. It is furniture for an existing rim lock, not a BS 3621 lock.
