Locking window handle comparison 2026

The best locking window handles, compared.

Top pick: Mont Hard universal espag handle, polished chrome, five spindles Best value: Yale YES-WINH-WH Essentials inline window handle, white, 40 mm – About £5.97 for a named 40 mm inline Yale, 4.5 from 569 reviews. The 40 mm title and 43 mm item depth still need a tape. Updated October 2026.

A locking window handle on a UK uPVC casement is usually an espag lever. A 7 mm square spindle turns a gearbox and a multi-point bar, and a push button plus a key stops the lever moving. Cockspur handles are the other family: a nose on a wedge and no spindle. Buyers on amazon.co.uk are replacing a broken lever or a lost key, not upgrading a window to 24. A useful listing states the spindle, or includes a real multi-spindle kit, prints the screw centres, and has a lock that reviews say still needs the button. Measure type, spindle, centres and hand first, using the [locking window handle buying guide](/hub/door-and-window-security/locking-window-handle/sub/locking-window-handle-buying-guide). Tilt-and-turn is a third pattern, and it is not what these 17 listings are. Inline espag, non-handed, is most of this set.

A locking window handle on a UK uPVC casement is usually an espag lever. A 7 mm square spindle turns a gearbox and a multi-point bar, and a push button plus a key stops the lever moving.

The best locking window handles in detail

Mont Hard universal espag handle, polished chrome, five spindles

Rank 1

Mont Hard universal espag handle, polished chrome,…

∼£10

Our view

The Mont Hard PTR92102CP is a polished chrome espag handle at about £9.99 with five spindles, a key and screws, made of zinc. The only rating is 5.0 from one review, with no text on the saved listing, so it cannot carry a pick. Screw centres and spindle lengths are missing, and the attachment field says magnetic.

Pros

  • Chrome zinc handle at about £9.99
  • Five spindles, key and screws listed
  • Push-to-release lock named

Cons

  • One review and no text
  • Spindle lengths and screw centres missing
  • Attachment field says magnetic
  • Brand Mont Hard and manufacturer Crescent Hardware

Best for: A chrome casement only after you confirm spindle lengths on the live pictures.

Less suitable: Anyone using a single five-star rating as evidence.

Common questions

How many reviews are there?

The listing line says 5.0 from 1 review. The saved listing has no review text.

What is included?

Five spindles, a cap, a key and screws. The spindle lengths are not listed.

Why is the attachment field odd?

It says magnetic, while the title describes an espag spindle handle. That conflict is unresolved.

Lubastia 2-pack window handle replacement

Rank 2

Lubastia 2-pack window handle replacement

Our view

The Lubastia 158422 is about £4.99 and the title says a locking two-pack with screws and covers. The listing has no spindle, no material, no colour and an item weight of 20 g. The included-components field says 1. There is one star and no review text. It is in the table so the gap is visible, not because it is a buy.

Pros

  • About £4.99
  • Title names screws and covers

Cons

  • 20 g listed weight
  • No spindle or screw centres
  • One review and no text
  • Included field says 1

Best for: Not recommended from this listing.

Less suitable: Any window you still need to lock tonight.

Only that the title says locking. The mechanism, spindle and screw centres are not on the listing.

20 g, for a pack the title calls two handles. That figure is recorded as printed.

How many reviews have text?

None. The star line says 5.0 from 1 review.

Bulivora 2-pack white locking window handles

Rank 3

Bulivora 2-pack white locking window handles

Our view

The Bulivora two-pack is about £5.99 with a key lock claimed and 4.7 from 13 reviews. Only two review texts are on the saved listing, both a few words of praise. Spindle length and screw centres are missing, the material line contradicts itself, and the bullet says one left and one right while the table says ambidextrous. The price is low because the listing does not tell you what fits.

Pros

  • About £5.99 for two
  • Keys and fittings claimed
  • Two short reviews are positive

Cons

  • Spindle length missing
  • Plastic versus brass
  • Handing contradicts itself
  • Only two review texts

Best for: Not a first choice until the live listing shows a spindle length.

Less suitable: Anyone who has not removed the old handle and measured it.

GB DIY Store 10 x Yale inline window handles, white, 40 mm

Rank 4

GB DIY Store 10 x Yale inline window handles,…

∼£25

Our view

This is ten white Yale inline handles at about £24.80, listed as 40 mm, with 4.6 from 967 reviews. The price per handle is low if every window really is 40 mm. Material, screw centres and a key count are missing from the table. Reviewers praise the click and the matching set. The repeated job is shortening the square pin. A review also describes white and green key-hole covers, which matters on an escape window.

Pros

  • 4.6 from 967 reviews
  • Ten handles for about £24.80
  • 40 mm inline, used as a universal swap
  • Click on close praised

Cons

  • About £2.48 each only if 40 mm suits every window
  • Spindles often need cutting
  • Key and screw counts not in the table
  • Inline shape differs from an offset original

Best for: A house of matching white 40 mm inline handles.

Less suitable: Mixed spindle lengths, a cockspur, or a single window.

Common questions

How many handles are in the pack?

The title says a pack of 10, each described as a 40 mm inline locking handle.

Does the listing confirm a key?

The specification table does not. One review describes white and green key covers.

Do buyers cut the spindle?

Yes. Several say the 40 mm pin is long and is sawn down, or the old pin is reused.

Yale Quartus inline espag handle, chrome, 40 mm

Rank 5

Yale Quartus inline espag handle, chrome, 40 mm

Our view

The Yale Quartus YBI40CH is a chrome inline espag handle at about £8.87, die-cast zinc, 40 mm spindle, 4.6 from 352 reviews. It is the chrome option with a real review count. The included-components field is empty, though reviews mention one key. Bolts that need a trim are the main fitting note. There is no repeated report of a snapped lever in the sampled reviews.

Pros

  • 4.6 from 352 reviews
  • Die-cast zinc, chrome, model YBI40CH
  • 40 mm spindle
  • Buyers used it after losing the old key

Cons

  • Included parts not listed in the table
  • Bolts often too long
  • Only one key in reviews
  • Handing not stated

Best for: A chrome 40 mm inline replacement on a uPVC espag window.

Less suitable: A white-only scheme, an unknown spindle, or a cockspur.

Common questions

Do the screws fit as supplied?

Reviewers often trim the bolts or reuse the old screws because the new ones are a little long.

Home Secure universal locking uPVC window handle, white, multi-spindle

Rank 6

Home Secure universal locking uPVC window handle,…

Our view

The Home Secure HS13285 is a single white locking espag handle at about £7.99 with a multi-spindle kit and 4.5 from 2,213 amazon.co.uk reviews. That volume is the strongest evidence in this set, and the kit is the practical answer when you have not measured the spindle. The listing does not name each spindle length or the screw centres. Reviewers who found a matching spindle finished the job in about ten minutes. Screws that are too short, missing covers, and one seized handle are the repeated complaints. It is the top pick when the window is an espag and the spindle length is unknown.

Pros

  • 4.5 from 2,213 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • About £7.99 with a multi-spindle kit
  • Reversible left or right
  • Ranked 1 in Window Fittings on the listing

Cons

  • Spindle lengths are not itemised
  • Screws sometimes too short
  • Screw covers missing on some orders
  • One seized handle reported

Best for: A uPVC or aluminium espag window when you do not yet know the spindle length.

Less suitable: A cockspur window, or a sash whose gearbox has already failed.

Common questions

Does this handle include more than one spindle?

The listing says it is a multi-spindle fit for most uPVC and aluminium espag windows. It does not list the individual lengths.

Is it left- or right-handed?

The title says it is reversible for left or right.

What do reviewers say about the screws?

Some reused the old screws because the new ones were too short, and some packs were short of screw covers.

Yale YES-WINH-WH Essentials inline window handle, white, 40 mm

Rank 7

Yale YES-WINH-WH Essentials inline window handle,…

Our view

The Yale YES-WINH-WH is a white inline key-locking espag handle at about £5.97, with 4.5 from 569 reviews, an aluminium body and one key. It is the best value in this set when you already know the spindle is about 40 mm. The table also prints an item depth of 43 mm, so the two figures need a tape, not a guess. Reviewers like the flush sit and the simple screw fit. A cut spindle, an all-white keyhole surround, and a failed push button are the faults that show up more than once.

Pros

  • About £5.97 with 4.5 from 569 reviews
  • Named Yale model YES-WINH-WH
  • Aluminium, one key, two-year warranty line
  • Ambidextrous inline lever

Cons

  • 40 mm title and 43 mm item depth disagree
  • Screw centres not stated
  • Button failed to release in more than one review
  • Only one key

Best for: A known 40 mm inline uPVC espag when you want a named Yale handle under £6.

Less suitable: An unknown spindle, a cockspur, or a window that needs a chrome or offset lever.

The included-components line says one key.

Can the button fail?

Two reviews describe a button that would not release the lever, including one that failed within a month.

Shield Hardware inline espag handle, white, 40 mm

Rank 8

Shield Hardware inline espag handle, white, 40 mm

Our view

The Shield Hardware handle is a white non-handed inline espag at about £4.99, with 43 mm centres, a 40 mm spindle and 4.5 from 124 reviews. Blanking caps are named for child or fire safety, which is unusual in this set, but the claim is a bullet, not a certificate. Screws that are too short, a useless cap, and one report of a loose insecure lock are the faults. The material line contradicts itself.

Pros

  • About £4.99
  • 43 mm centres and 40 mm spindle both stated
  • Non-handed
  • Blanking caps named for child or fire safety

Cons

  • Screws often too small
  • Material listed as both PVC and ABS
  • One review says the lock feels insecure
  • Only one key

Best for: A measured 40 mm white inline handle when price matters and you can reuse the old screws.

Less suitable: A window with unknown centres, or a buyer who needs a documented key count and one material.

ERA Maxim offset window handle, white, right hand, 40 mm

Rank 9

ERA Maxim offset window handle, white, right hand,…

Our view

The ERA Maxim on this listing is a right-hand offset white handle at about £7.59, 40 mm spindle, 4.4 from 52 reviews. It is the only clearly handed crank in the set. Fourteen review texts are almost all about a smooth two-screw fit. The repeated complaint is a single key. Buy a left-hand window a different handle.

Pros

  • Right-hand offset with knuckle clearance
  • 40 mm spindle that the listing says you can cut
  • 4.4 from 52 reviews, smooth in the texts
  • About £7.59

Cons

  • Right hand only
  • Screw centres not stated
  • Material not stated
  • Only one key in reviews

Best for: A right-hand cranked espag where the inline lever catches your knuckles.

Less suitable: A left-hand window, an inline window, or a cockspur.

mwellewm 2-pack espag handles, white, 43 mm spindle

Rank 10

mwellewm 2-pack espag handles, white, 43 mm spindle

∼£10

Our view

The mwellewm pair is about £9.69 with a 43 mm spindle in the title and 4.3 from 204 reviews. The useful complaint is that the stem does not come out and is too long for windows around 30 mm, so buyers return them. Caps do not fit. When the length happens to match, the screw swap is quick.

Pros

  • 4.3 from 204 reviews
  • Two handles at about £9.69
  • Push-button lock and key listed
  • Easy when the length matches

Cons

  • Spindle not removable in reviews
  • Too long for shorter gearboxes
  • Caps do not fit
  • Finish field says unfinished

Best for: A uPVC window you have measured at about 43 mm and you can return it if the stem will not seat.

Less suitable: An unknown or short spindle, because this one does not swap.

Reviewers say the supplied caps do not fit.

What is the finish field?

The table says unfinished, and the title says white aluminium.

WODSTA 2-pack lockable window handles, white, 43 mm

Rank 11

WODSTA 2-pack lockable window handles, white, 43 mm

∼£10

Our view

The WODSTA WTA009 is two white aluminium handles at about £9.99, listed with a 43 mm spindle and 43 mm centres. The 4.2 from 1,185 reviews is the same text pool as the four-pack, so it is not separate proof. One review describes a lever that opens without the button, which means the key does not lock the window. Other texts say the fit was easy when a spindle matched.

Pros

  • Two handles at about £9.99
  • 43 mm centres stated
  • Aluminium, left or right
  • Easy screw fit when the spindle matches

Cons

  • Review pool shared with the four-pack
  • A loose lever can bypass the button
  • Spindle contents disagree with the 43 mm title
  • Less solid than original handles

Best for: A pair of uPVC windows only after you check that the lever will not move without the button.

Less suitable: A window where the lock must hold, or a buyer treating 1,185 reviews as unique to this ASIN.

Common questions

Are the 1,185 reviews only for this two-pack?

No. The same review texts appear on the WODSTA four-pack B0DQDRT2BT. Treat them as one pool.

Can the lock be bypassed?

One review says the lever is loose enough to open without the button, so the key cannot lock it.

What spindle is listed?

The title says 43 mm. A review says four lengths were supplied and none fitted.

WODSTA 4-pack window handles, spindles 10 to 55 mm

Rank 12

WODSTA 4-pack window handles, spindles 10 to 55 mm

∼£23

Our view

The WODSTA WTA022 is a four-pack at about £22.99 with spindles listed as 10, 15, 30, 40 and 55 mm. The star line is the same 1,185-review pool as the cheaper two-pack, and a shared review talks about a price under £10, so this page is a weak guide to this ASIN. The loose-lever complaint in that pool still matters. Screw centres are not stated.

Pros

  • Five spindle lengths named
  • Four handles, eight screws and four keys in the bullet
  • Left or right
  • Aluminium

Cons

  • Review pool is not independent
  • A shared review describes a lock you can bypass
  • About £22.99 against a two-pack at about £9.99 with the same stars
  • Manufacturer spelt WODTSA in one field

Best for: Only if you need four handles and those five lengths, and you accept the shared reviews.

Less suitable: Anyone treating the 1,185 reviews as proof of this four-pack alone.

Common questions

Which spindle lengths does the title list?

Is the review count independent?

No. The texts match the two-pack B0C543LY9T, including a line about paying less than £10.

What is in the box according to the bullet?

Four handles, eight screws, four keys and multi spindles. The included-components field only says UPVC window handle.

Kamtop 4 inline window handles, white, 43 mm spindle

Rank 13

Kamtop 4 inline window handles, white, 43 mm spindle

∼£15

Our view

The Kamtop HG098 four-pack is about £14.99, white inline handles with a 43 mm spindle and 43 mm centres, 4.1 from 230 reviews. That is about £3.75 each if 43 mm is your length. Aluminium and zinc both appear as the material. A wobbling keyhole and poor caps are the repeated faults. One review talks about a ten-pack, which is not this title.

Pros

  • Four handles for about £14.99
  • 43 mm spindle and 43 mm centres both printed
  • Left or right
  • 4.1 from 230 reviews

Cons

  • Keyholes wobble
  • Caps do not fit
  • Aluminium and zinc both listed
  • A review mentions spindle lengths this listing does not claim

Best for: Four matching windows that already use a 43 mm spindle.

Less suitable: Mixed spindle lengths, or a buyer who has already had a wobbling keyhole.

Common questions

Is the 43 mm figure the spindle or the screw spacing?

The title says 43 mm spindle length. The centre-to-centre field is also 43 mm. Measure both on the old handle.

What lock does the listing claim?

Key lock and push-button lock. A bullet says the key deadlocks the handle.

What do reviewers complain about?

A wobbling keyhole on every handle in a pack, and screw covers that do not fit.

Neoteck 2-piece white espag handles with 5 spindles

Rank 14

Neoteck 2-piece white espag handles with 5 spindles

∼£14

Our view

The Neoteck pair is about £14.24 for two white key-locking handles, 43 mm centres and a spindle kit, with 4.1 from 177 reviews. The lengths in the kit are not printed. Reviewers like the two-minute fit once the pin is chosen. Screw covers that fall out are the common complaint, and a minority report a collar or lock that failed early.

Pros

  • Two handles and a spindle kit
  • 43 mm centres stated
  • 4.1 from 177 reviews
  • Keys and caps listed

Cons

  • Spindle lengths not numbered
  • Screw covers fall out
  • Some collars and locks fail early
  • About £7.12 each before you know the lengths

Best for: Two uPVC espag windows at 43 mm centres when you want spare spindles.

Less suitable: A buyer who needs named spindle lengths, or who cares about screw covers staying put.

Common questions

What is in the box?

The bullet says two handles, four screws, two keys, four caps and ten spindles. The spindle lengths are not numbered.

What screw spacing does it claim?

43 mm, for uPVC, aluminium and balcony doors.

What fails in reviews?

Screw covers fall out. Some locks and collars fail after a short time.

YAOSHENGUP 4-pack window handles, cockspur

Rank 15

YAOSHENGUP 4-pack window handles, cockspur

∼£10

Our view

The YAOSHENGUP four-pack is about £9.99 and the table calls it a cockspur, so it is not a substitute for an espag spindle handle. A review says it is not key locking. Another says the holes are 62 mm rather than 60 mm. Covers fall out and strike plates failed for one buyer. It stays in the comparison only as the cockspur example.

Pros

  • Four handles for about £9.99
  • Aluminium cockspur when the holes already match
  • Some buyers refitted with the old screws

Cons

  • Not an espag
  • Key-lock claim disputed
  • 10 mm in the table versus about 62 mm in reviews
  • Covers fall out
  • Strike plates failed

Best for: An existing cockspur only after you measure the hole pitch yourself.

Less suitable: Any espag window, or a buyer who needs a key lock.

Common questions

Is this an espag handle?

No. The specification table says cockspur. There is no spindle.

Does it lock with a key?

The table says key lock. A verified review says they are not key locking.

What hole spacing should you measure?

The table says 10 mm centre to centre. Reviews say the outer holes are about 60 to 62 mm and a 2 mm error stops a clean fit.

eSynic 2-pack window handles, white, five spindles

Rank 16

eSynic 2-pack window handles, white, five spindles

∼£13

Our view

The eSynic pair is about £12.95 with 43 mm centres, a five-spindle kit and 3.8 from 54 reviews. The kit idea is right. The reviews are not: handles shear, the nose fouls the frame, and one pack was mixed-hand against the photo. Model ESYHG967 and part ESYHG194 do not match each other.

Pros

  • Five spindles and snap-off screws in the listing
  • 43 mm centres
  • Two handles, two keys
  • Restored a lock for some buyers who had lost keys

Cons

  • 3.8 from 54 reviews
  • Handles sheared in more than one review
  • Nose fouls the frame
  • Handing disagreed with the picture
  • Two model numbers

Best for: Only if you can return it easily and you need a spindle kit at this price.

Less suitable: A window you cannot easily send parts back from, or a frame that sits close to the handle nose.

Common questions

Are both handles the same hand?

The table says ambidextrous. One review says the picture showed two left-hand handles and the pack was one of each.

What spindle lengths are included?

Five sizes are claimed. The millimetre lengths are not listed.

What broke?

Reviews describe handles that sheared off, and a nose that fouls the frame unless it is filed.

Kamtop window handles with 10 to 55 mm spindles

Rank 17

Kamtop window handles with 10 to 55 mm spindles

∼£26

Our view

This Kamtop listing is about £26 and names spindles of 10, 15, 30, 43 and 55 mm, with 3.7 from 33 reviews. The title says four handles and the bullet says two. Reviews describe snaps at fitting and within weeks, plus caps that fall out. A multi-spindle kit at this price is the wrong way to buy the idea the Home Secure listing sells for about £7.99.

Pros

  • Five spindle lengths named
  • Push button and key described
  • Left or right

Cons

  • 3.7 from 33 reviews
  • Pack count contradicts itself
  • Handles snap in several reviews
  • About £26
  • Caps do not stay

Best for: Nobody in this comparison, unless the pack count and the snap reports are resolved on the live listing.

Less suitable: A buyer who wants a reliable multi-spindle handle.

Common questions

How many handles are in the pack?

The title says four. The bullet says two handles, four screws, two keys, ten spindles and four caps. The number-of-items field says 44.

What spindle lengths are named?

10, 15, 30, 43 and 55 mm.

What failed?

Several reviews say handles snapped while being fitted, after a few uses, or after a few months.

How we compared

Scores use the 17 amazon.co.uk listings and the review notes already on those cards, checked on 19 October 2026. There is no lab test, no burglary test and no check that a handle keeps a particular window shut. A bullet that says locking, child safety or universal is scored as a claim. The highest score is the top pick. The strongest low price for a clearly stated 40 mm inline job is the best value. The weights below sum to 100.

1

Evidence

35%

Star rating, then a hard cap when the count is one review or the text is missing. A 5.0 from one review does not outrank 4.5 from 2,213. The WODSTA two-pack and four-pack share the same review texts, so the 1,185 count is one pool and the four-pack does not receive a second full evidence score.

2

Specification

40%

A real espag scores for a stated spindle or a real multi-spindle kit, screw centres when printed, a key or push button that reviews do not contradict, and handing that matches the shape. A cockspur scores only as a cockspur. A loose lever that opens without the button is a deduction. Conflicting pack counts and a 20 g weight are deductions.

3

Value

25%

Shelf price against what the listing actually states. About £7.99 with 2,213 reviews and a spindle kit beats about £26 with 33 reviews and snap reports. About £5.97 for a named 40 mm Yale handle beats about £4.99 with no spindle figure.

Locking window handle buying guide

Buy the family that is already on the window, then the spindle length, then the screw centres. An espag and a cockspur do not swap. A kit is the practical buy when the length is unknown. A named 40 mm Yale is enough when you have measured about 40 mm. A ten-pack only pays if every window is that length. None of these listings is a PAS 24 window.

What is a locking window handle?

A locking window handle on a UK uPVC casement is usually an espag lever. A 7 mm square spindle turns a gearbox and a multi-point bar. A push button plus a key stops the lever moving. Cockspur handles are the other family. They have a nose on a wedge and no spindle. The two families do not swap. Tilt-and-turn is a third pattern, and it is not what these 17 listings are. Inline espag, non-handed, is most of this set. The ERA Maxim is the offset: right hand only, 40 mm, about £7.59.

Best for

  • A uPVC espag window with a broken lever or a lost key
  • A measured 40 mm inline handle, or an unknown spindle where a kit is safer

Not ideal for

  • A cockspur window if the handle you bought has an espag spindle
  • A sash whose gearbox has already failed

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Buying the wrong family

A square spindle is an espag. A hooked nose on a wedge is a cockspur. They do not interchange. The YAOSHENGUP pack is the cockspur in this set, and a review says it is not key locking.

  2. 2

Treating 40 mm and 43 mm as the same

Too short will not drive the lock. Too long will not sit flat. The Yale YES title says 40 mm and the item depth also says 43 mm. Measure the old pin. A kit beats a guess when the length is unknown.

  3. 3

    Trusting one five-star review

A 5.0 from one review with no text does not outrank 4.5 from 2,213. The WODSTA 1,185 reviews are one shared pool, not two samples. A lever that opens without its button means the key cannot lock the window.

What to weigh up

Type, spindle and centres

High

Square spindle means espag. A hooked nose on a wedge means cockspur. ERA's handle guide and the UK trade measuring pages use that split. Inline espag is normally left or right. Cranked espag and cockspur are handed. The ERA Maxim in this set is right hand only, so a left-hand crank needs a different handle. For an espag, measure the exposed square from the back of the handle base to the tip. Trade guides put the usual range at about 10 mm to 55 mm. Too short will not drive the lock.

Lock behaviour and review evidence

High

The key should stop a button the lever actually needs. A WODSTA review says the lever opened without the button, so the key could not lock it. That complaint sits in a review pool shared by the two-pack and the four-pack, so the 1,185 count is one sample, not two. Prefer 4.5 from hundreds of reviews over 5.0 from one review with no text. The Lubastia and Mont Hard listings are both 5.0 from one review, and the saved listings have no review text.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Known 40 mm inline

You have already measured about 40 mm on a white inline espag. The Yale YES-WINH-WH is the best value at about £5.97, with 4.5 from 569 reviews. The title says 40 mm and the item depth also says 43 mm, so check the old pin before you rely on either figure.

Common questions about locking window handles

Which locking window handle is the top pick in 2026?
The Home Secure multi-spindle handle is the top pick in this set. It scores 91 at about £7.99, with 4.5 from 2,213 amazon.co.uk reviews, for a uPVC or aluminium espag when you have not measured the spindle. The listing does not name each spindle length or the screw centres. Screws are sometimes too short. It is not the pick for a cockspur, or for a sash whose gearbox has already failed.
How much does a locking window handle cost?
One handle in this set sits at about £5 to £9: Shield about £4.99, Yale YES about £5.97, the ERA offset about £7.59, Home Secure about £7.99 and Yale Quartus about £8.87. Pairs and a four-pack sit around £10 to £15. The upper end is the WODSTA four-pack at about £22.99, the Yale ten-pack at about £24.80 and the Kamtop multi-spindle listing at about £26.
What should you measure before you buy?
Measure the family first. A square spindle is an espag. A hooked nose on a wedge is a cockspur, and they do not interchange. For an espag, measure the exposed square from the back of the handle base to the tip. Then measure the screw centres. Espag guides say 43 mm is usual. Inline handles are normally left or right. A cranked handle and a cockspur are handed. The ERA Maxim here is right hand only.
Can an espag handle replace a cockspur?
No. An espag handle drives a gearbox with a square spindle. A cockspur has a nose on a wedge and no spindle. The YAOSHENGUP four-pack is the cockspur in this set, at about £9.99. Its table says a key lock, and a review says the handles are not key locking. The table prints 10 mm centres, and reviews talk about 60 to 62 mm. Measure the old holes. Do not buy it for an espag window.
Does a new handle make the window PAS 24?
No. PAS 24:2022+A1:2024 tests a complete new window or doorset, not a replacement handle. BSI and the GAI ironmongery guide both say that. None of these 17 listings cites a BS EN 13126 part number. The National Protective Security Authority prefers lockable multi-point espagnolettes over a single cockspur, and says a poor window may need replacing rather than a new lever. A handle lock holds the sash shut. It is not a child restrictor.
Can you fit a key lock on an escape window?
Approved Document B volume 1, for English dwellings, allows locks with or without removable keys on an escape window. The opening still has to be at least 0.33 m² and at least 450 mm by 450 mm, with the bottom no more than 1,100 mm above the floor, and it must stay open unaided. A restrictor limits how far the sash opens. A handle lock holds it shut. Keep the key where adults can reach it.
When should you call a fitter instead of swapping the handle?
A matching swap is two screws, tested with the sash open. Call a fitter when the gearbox is dead, the sash has dropped, the screws are seized, you would drill a frame you do not own, or you would block an escape window. A new lever does not repair a bar that does not move. A separate bolt or a hinge-side lock is a different product. See the ABUS window lock comparison.
Why is a five-star handle with one review not the top pick?
The Lubastia listing is about £4.99 with 5.0 from one review and no review text. It lists a 20 g weight, and it has no spindle, no material and no screw centres. Mont Hard is also 5.0 from one review, with no text, and the attachment field says magnetic. The score method caps that evidence. A 4.5 from 2,213 reviews outranks a single five-star line. The WODSTA 1,185 reviews are one shared pool across two ASINs, not two samples.

Our verdict

The Home Secure multi-spindle handle is the top pick. It scores 91, the highest in this set, at about £7.99, with 4.5 from 2,213 reviews, for an espag window when the spindle length is unknown. The listing does not itemise each length, and screws are sometimes too short. The Yale YES-WINH-WH is the best value at about £5.97 when you already know the spindle is about 40 mm, with 4.5 from 569 reviews. The title says 40 mm and the item depth also says 43 mm, so measure before you rely on either figure. A cockspur does not replace an espag. None of these handles is a PAS 24 window or a child restrictor.
