Locking window handle buying guide

Updated: October 2026

The white lever on the spare-room casement has cracked, and every amazon.co.uk photo looks like the same handle. A locking window handle buying guide is the order of the checks, not a star chart. Decide the family, then the spindle, then the screw centres, then the hand and the button. The [locking window handle comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/locking-window-handle) ranks 17 listings Peter F. read on 19 October 2026. This page does not name a winner. There was no lab test. A purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. If you cannot tell a square hole from a nose on a wedge, use [cockspur vs espag window handle](/hub/door-and-window-security/locking-window-handle/sub/locking-window-handle-inline-or-cockspur) first.

Espag or cockspur first

The first split is the family, and price is useless until that is settled. An espag handle has a square spindle that turns a gearbox and a locking bar inside the sash. A cockspur has a nose that drops onto a wedge on the frame, and it has no spindle. ERA's window-handle guide and Handle Store treat the two as different replacements. Most modern UK uPVC casements are espag. Older timber and some early uPVC are still cockspur. A square rod means espag. A hooked spur means cockspur. A cranked lever with a square hole is still an espag, so the ERA Maxim at about £7.59 stays on the espag side.

Spindle length and screw centres

Once the window is an espag, spindle length and screw centres still decide the listing, and both can be 43 mm. Screw centres are the distance between the two fixing holes. Trade guides, including Handle Store, treat 43 mm as the usual espag centres. Measure yours anyway. Spindle length is how far the square rod sticks out of the back of the handle. Too short and it will not turn the bar. Too long and the handle will not sit flat. The Home Secure listing says multi-spindle and does not itemise the millimetres. Yale YES-WINH-WH, at about £5.97, prints 40 mm in the title and 43 mm as an item depth. A kit is the buy when you have not measured. A fixed 40 mm pin is enough when you have.

Handing, button and key

Most inline espag handles in this set are non-handed. The same body can go on a left or a right casement. You need a handed handle when the lever is offset. The only clearly handed crank here is the ERA Maxim, and the listing is right-hand. A left-hand window needs a different handle. The Bulivora two-pack, at about £5.99, claims one left and one right while the table also says ambidextrous, and it omits the spindle length. A key-locking espag should need the push button before the lever moves. One WODSTA review, in a pool shared with the four-pack, describes a lever that opens without the button, so the key does not hold the window.

What the price bands are actually buying

The shelf prices on 19 October 2026 fall into three bands, and the band is not a security grade. About £5 to £9 buys one handle: Shield at about £4.99, Yale YES at about £5.97, the ERA offset at about £7.59, Home Secure at about £7.99, and Yale Quartus chrome at about £8.87. Lubastia is also about £4.99, with a listed weight of 20 g and one review with no text. Pairs sit around £10 to £15. The upper end is the WODSTA four-pack at about £22.99, the Yale ten-pack at about £24.80 and a Kamtop multi-spindle listing at about £26. A ten-pack only pays if every window is that length. PAS 24:2022+A1:2024 tests a complete window or doorset, not a lever.

Common questions

What do I measure if I cannot remove the handle yet?
You can still see the family. A square rod in the back of the lever is an espag. A nose sitting on a wedge is a cockspur. Centres are the two screw holes once the cover is off, which means opening the handle so the hidden screw is exposed. Spindle length is the rod that sticks out, measured with a tape, not guessed from the item depth on the Amazon table. If the screws are painted in or the sash has dropped, that measurement is a fitter's job.
Is 40 mm the same as 43 mm?
No. On these listings, 40 mm is usually a spindle length and 43 mm is usually the screw centres, except when a page prints 43 mm for both. Yale YES-WINH-WH prints 40 mm in the title and 43 mm as item depth, so you need the old spindle on a tape. Kamtop HG098 states 43 mm spindle and 43 mm centres separately. A pin that is a few millimetres too long will stop the handle sitting flat against the sash.
Do I need a left-hand and a right-hand handle?
Only if the lever is cranked, or if the window is a cockspur with a handed nose. An inline espag is normally non-handed, and the Home Secure title says left or right. The ERA Maxim in this comparison is a right-hand offset at about £7.59 with a 40 mm spindle. Buy a different handle for a left-hand crank. Do not assume a two-pack is one of each if the table also says ambidextrous.
Will a multi-spindle kit fit a cockspur?
No. The extra pins are square espag spindles of different lengths. A cockspur locks with a nose on a wedge and has no gearbox for those pins to turn. Ordering the Home Secure kit, or any other multi-spindle espag, will not give you a cockspur step. Measure the hole pitch and the step height on the old cockspur, then look only at cockspur listings.
Can I lock a bedroom escape window?
In England, Approved Document B volume 1, paragraph 2.10, allows locks with or without a removable key on an escape window. The opening still has to be at least 0.33 square metres and at least 450 mm by 450 mm, with the bottom no more than 1,100 mm above the floor, and it must stay open without being held. A handle lock holds the sash shut. A restrictor limits how far it opens. Keep the key where an adult can reach it.
