You hang a siren on the furniture that is already there. Defender's Ultra Slim, EL00237, is described for hotels, hostels and travel, on plastic or metal, with three LR44 cells in the box. The instructions put the cord on first, over a lever, a knob or a mortise handle. A door with nothing you can loop leaves the siren in the bag. A keycard that already opens the door still opens it. Do not wear it or treat it as a personal alarm. Student halls are a different tenancy and are not this page.

When a wedge is the wrong object

A door-wedge alarm fails when the door does not meet the floor the way the wedge expects. Soolena's door-stop alarm is listed at £12.49. It is a wedge for an inward-opening hinged door, the page claims 120 dB, and the 9 V battery is not included. If the hotel door opens outwards, that wedge has no inward gap to jam. Silverline's wedge page says thick carpet or an uneven floor may need a sensitivity change. In the reviews gathered for this set, one buyer preferred the Ultra Slim because wedges need the right floor gap. DoorJammer and Revere are outside this set. Amazon lists 20 g and about £9.95, with 4.2 from 101 ratings. Defender's page lists 30 g. Keep both weights. EL00002, the top pick for a metal handle at home, travels only on metal. Arm it, then leave

Fit the cord, then use the delay to get your hand off the handle. Defender's instructions for EL00237 give a 7-second delay before the siren is live. Hang it, switch it on, step away, and reverse that order at breakfast. If you arm it while the body is still swinging, you set it off. Keep the pad unused on a painted hotel door. A hanging alarm does not need a gap under the door, so an outward-opening door can still take the cord when a lever, knob or mortise handle is there. Will a door wedge alarm work on hotel carpet?

How do I leave the room without setting the alarm off?
Use the 7-second delay on EL00237. Fit the cord, then take your hand off the handle before the siren is live. In the morning, switch it off before you turn the lever, then unloop the cord. If you arm the unit while it is still moving, the false alarm is yours. A door you cannot disarm quickly should not carry the siren.
