Window handle alarm: what to check before you buy

Updated: October 2026

You want a noise if someone tries a handle tonight, and you still mean to lock the door. A search for a window handle alarm mixes glass pads, magnetic contacts, keyed handles and a battery siren that hangs on the lever. This page chooses the hanger: the sensor, the fixing and whether the cells are in the box. The matrix stays on the [window handle with alarm comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/window-handle-with-alarm). Shelf prices on 15 October 2026 ran from about £8.39 to £10.99. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

A window handle alarm here is a battery siren you hang or strap on a door or window handle so it sounds when the handle is touched or moved. It does not throw a bolt or hold a sash shut. A glass pad, or a chime with a magnet on the frame, is a different product. UK pages still mix them. LockMonster lists a MINDER hanger at about £15.82 including VAT, outside our five. A Solon page prints the slim set at about 90 g with LR44 cells, while the Safety Supply Company page for SO-EL00237 prints about 90 g and three AAA, which is the other body. Keep those figures apart.

Sensor, fit and batteries

Match the sensor to the handle, then the fixing and the cells. EL00002 reads a magnetic field on metal only, at low, medium or high. A plastic uPVC lever gives it nothing to read, and the dial will not add metal. Window use is not claimed, so the category name is a weak reason to hang it on a casement. EL00237 trips on vibration, so the lever has to move. The listing states a 7-second exit delay, and Defender offers a cord or a pad. Adhesive can reduce detection, so the cord is the stronger fixing when the lever will be turned. On 15 October 2026 DOUQIFEI was about £8.39, components marked no, with no review line. JUHUTONG was about £8.98 at 3.8 from 24 ratings, cell unstated. HERCHR at about £10.99 left batteries out, and UK reviews say the hook slides off. Both Defenders were about £9.95 with cells included: three AAA on EL00002 and three LR44 on EL00237.

The two Defenders at about £9.95

Both were about £9.95 on 15 October 2026. EL00002, the magnetic unit for metal handles, is the top pick: three AAA cells, 4.1 from 1,380 ratings, and no Sold Secure bullet. Defender lists 79 g and a 6-second exit delay. Amazon prints 90 g and omits the delay. Keep both weights. EL00237, the vibration Ultra Slim, is the best value at that price: a cord or pad, three LR44 cells, a 7-second delay, a Sold Secure Gold bullet, and 4.2 from 101 ratings. Defender lists 30 g; Amazon lists 20 g. Neither gram figure is chosen here. Assessed - Other is not PAS 24. A plastic lever leaves EL00237.

When to buy a lock instead

Buy a lock, or a keyed window handle, when the sash must stay shut. The siren will not stop the turn. These listings show neither Approved Document Q compliance nor insurer acceptance. The split is in window handle alarm versus a lockable handle. A glass pad is for the pane. A two-part magnetic contact watches an opened frame and will not report a hand on a handle that is still shut. Keep the siren for a portable noise after you have locked up. Fitting is in how to fit a window handle alarm, and a conditional pick is in the best window handle alarm.

Common questions

Is a window handle alarm the same as a glass-break pad?
No. A window handle alarm here hangs on the handle and reacts to touch, a magnetic field or vibration. A glass-break pad sticks to the pane. Parkers treats pads and two-part contacts as a different purchase. If the listing has no hanger, cord or hook, it sits outside this choice.
Which sensor trips on a finger, and which needs a shake?
EL00002's magnetic field is for a change around a metal handle, which a hand on a steel lever is meant to cause. EL00237 needs the handle to move, and the listing includes a 7-second exit delay. Plastic gives EL00002 nothing to read. A lever that stays still can leave a vibration unit silent.
Are the batteries in the box?
On 15 October 2026 both Defenders included cells: three AAA for EL00002 and three LR44 for EL00237. DOUQIFEI at about £8.39 had included components marked no. HERCHR at about £10.99 did not list batteries. JUHUTONG left the cell type unstated. Check that line before you assume you can hang it the night it arrives.
Does Sold Secure Gold on the slim unit mean the window is PAS 24?
No. Sold Secure Gold on the EL00237 listing is a claim about that alarm, not your frame. Secured by Design records the entry as Assessed - Other, which is not PAS 24. A scheme mark on a siren does not hold the sash shut, and it is not Approved Document Q compliance.
What should I buy if the sash must stay shut?
Buy something that holds the sash. A hanging alarm only makes a noise and will not stop the handle turning. A key-locking window handle is the buy when the window must stay closed. Hang a siren only after that opening is already locked.
