ABUS padlock for a shed or gate

Updated: October 2026

A shed door usually fails at the screws, not at the brand on the padlock. You can hang a sound ABUS padlock for a shed on a hasp whose fixings are still visible, and the lock will still end up in the flower bed. This page is the door, the hasps, and what a policy might add. The cards are on the [ABUS padlock comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/abus-padlock). Measuring and a 145 code are on [how to fit an ABUS padlock](/hub/door-and-window-security/abus-padlock/sub/abus-padlock-how-to-use). Peter F. used the listings from 19 October 2026. The door decides before the padlock

Look at the leaf before security level 9. Secured by Design says a door of at least 44 mm may take a BS 3621 mortice. A thin ledged-and-braced door cannot, so the bolts go through the frame. A padlock does not thicken a 12 mm board. A typical garden shed means a hasp and staple, then a padlock that fits. A gate often has only a bolt or a chain in the rain. ProtectUK still asks for hasps on a wooden garage door. If the timber flexes, fix the door first.

Two hasps, hidden bolts

Secured by Design wants a pair of hasps that hide the fixings, coach-bolted or fixed with security screws. ProtectUK asks for two hasps and closed-shackle padlocks, one high and one low, and for exposed hinge screws to be replaced. You can follow the pair of hasps. You cannot follow the closed shackle. Every lock in this set has an open shackle. Bolt through the frame so the closed hasp covers the heads. A coach bolt with the nut inside beats a short screw in cladding. The 64TI/50HB80’s 80 mm of clear height is for a deep staple. On a flat hasp that would take 24 mm, that long bar is leverage. Two open-shackle locks do not become closed shackles.

Which ABUS listing is for a wet gate

The outdoor candidate is the 70IB/45 Aqua Safe, the top pick for rain, at about £19, with a cap, drainage and an 8 mm shackle. Water can still get in from the top, and the listing prints no ABUS level. The 83WP/63 is the step up when the hole takes 11.5 mm. It is about £47.41 at ABUS level 9, 4.1 from 85 reviews. One text says the bar is too thick for a small staple. A key snapped in a new barrel. One buyer fitted it because an insurer asked for a strong lock. The 64TI/45, the best value at about £6.99, can still suit a toolbox inside the shed. Named picks are on the best ABUS padlock page.

What a policy might add

There is no single UK rule that every shed must have a closed-shackle padlock. Cycleplan’s document of 1 July 2023 asks for a closed-shackle or 5-lever padlock on a shed door, separate from the bike lock. Velosure accepts a 5-lever mortice, a 5-lever padlock, or CEN 3 to 6. ABUS level 5 or 9 is not automatically either sentence. None of these seven was confirmed as Sold Secure approved. That 2025 ladder runs Bronze to Diamond as CEN 3 to CEN 6 for products it has tested. If the schedule says CEN 3, you need paperwork that says CEN 3. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers a faulty lock. It does not force an insurer to accept an open shackle the schedule excluded.

Common questions

Is an ABUS padlock enough for a shed door?
It can be the lock on the hasp. It is not enough if the door is thin, the screws are visible, or the policy asks for a closed shackle these listings do not have. A door of about 44 mm may take a BS 3621 mortice instead. A heavier padlock does not thicken a 12 mm board. If the timber flexes when you pull the hasp, fix the door first.
Do I need two locks?
ProtectUK and Secured by Design both describe two hasps, one high and one low. Two open-shackle ABUS locks can sit on that pair. They are still not the closed shackles ProtectUK names. Every lock in this set has an open shackle. Buying two does not change the shape. Hide the screw heads when each hasp is shut.
Does insurance require a closed shackle?
Some policies do. Cycleplan’s July 2023 document asks for a closed shackle or a 5-lever padlock on the shed. Velosure’s wording includes CEN 3 to 6 and still wants the bike locked to an immovable object. Yours may say something else. It is not a national rule. ABUS level 5 or 9 does not automatically meet either sentence.
Which of these seven is the outdoor one?
The 70IB/45 is the rain listing, with a cap and drainage, at about £19 and 4.6 from 1,173 reviews. The 83WP/63 is the coated level 9 body if the hole takes 11.5 mm. The 145/40 is a poor outdoor fit on the reviews. The 64TI/45 has no drainage cap and suits a toolbox inside the shed. Water can still enter the Aqua Safe from the top.
Will the 83WP shackle fit a small staple?
Often it will not. The bullets give 11.5 mm diameter and 35 mm of clear height. One reviewer says to check the hole because the bar is large. Measure before you spend about £47.41. Level 9 does not shrink the shackle. A key snapped in a new barrel is already in that review file.
Is the Aqua Safe Sold Secure?
It was not confirmed as a Sold Secure approved padlock, and the amazon listing does not print that mark. It is a weather-designed open-shackle lock at 4.6 from 1,173 reviews, about £19. Sold Secure Bronze to Diamond is a separate list, mapped to CEN grades for products it has tested. The listing also leaves the ABUS level blank.
