How to fit an ABUS padlock

Updated: October 2026

The usual failure is ordinary. The shackle will not pass, the four-digit code was set with the bar not fully down, or oil and rain have gummed the lock. This is how to fit an ABUS padlock from the seven amazon.co.uk listings: measure, test it open and shut, then use the key or the code the way that model works. Which model suits the job is on the [ABUS padlock comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/abus-padlock). Why the hasp may need a second fitting is on the [shed and gate page](/hub/door-and-window-security/abus-padlock/sub/abus-padlock-shed-gate). Peter F. followed the listings and ABUS’s 145 sheet in October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Measure, then test on the staple

Measure before you shut the door. You need the hole diameter, the thickness the shackle must pass, and the clear height and width so the body sits against the hasp. Lockshop Direct then asks for the shortest shackle that still fits, because leftover bar is a lever. The 64TI/45 is 7 mm with 24 mm of clear height. The 64TI/50HB80 is 8 mm and 80 mm, which reaches a deep staple and leaves a long bar outside. The 70IB/45 is 8 mm, 24 mm high and only 20 mm wide. The 83WP/63 is 11.5 mm. The 60/40 prints no diameter. If it only fits when you force the bar, return it. Change model in the buying guide.

Keyed locks that snap shut

The T65AL/40 and the 70IB/45 lock when you press the shackle. The 83WP/63 uses a Z-bar so you can choose key locking or press-to-lock. Set that choice while the door is open. Automatic mode is a poor habit on a shed if the spare key is inside. Count the keys first. The 64TI/45 highlight says two keys. Aqua Safe reviews also say two, and only two comes up often. These amazon units are not keyed alike, so a second lock from the same page will not take the first key. Keep one key outside. Turn the key, then pull the body. Do not use the key as a handle.

Set the 145/40 code

The 145/40 is the only combination lock here. Open it on the factory code 0000. Turn the shackle into the notch and hold it fully down while you set four digits. Release, scramble the wheels, and test before you hang it. If the shackle was not fully down, the new code was not saved. One amazon unit would not leave the zeros and was replaced, so test that first open. The ABUS sheet describes 90 degrees into the notch. A Hornbach drawing for some 145 versions shows 180 degrees. Use the notch on the lock you are holding. Write the code somewhere that is not the locker door. A forgotten code cannot be reset from the reviews.

Stiff, wet, or jammed

A stiff key or a stuck wheel is usually dirt, alignment or water. Oil is the wrong first move. Notes that circulate with the 145/40 say graphite or silicone, because oil holds grit. Treat that as a buyer note, not an ABUS laboratory result. Aqua Safe reviewers use a water-displacing spray because water enters from the top. If the 145 digits sit off the line, press the body, line them up, and pull. Stop if the key has snapped, including the 83WP/63 review of a key snapped in a new barrel. Do not drill the body. A locksmith is the next step for a snapped key, a forgotten 145 code, or locks you need keyed alike.

Common questions

What do I measure on the hasp?
Measure the hole, the thickness of the stack, and the clear height and width. Then pick the shortest listed shackle that still passes. The 83WP/63’s 11.5 mm bar and the 64TI/50HB80’s 80 mm clear height are the two that most often surprise a photo order. The 70IB/45 is only 20 mm wide inside 24 mm of height. The 60/40 listing prints no diameter.
How do I set a new code on the 145/40?
Open it on 0000, turn the shackle into the notch, hold it fully down, set four digits, release, scramble, and test. The ABUS sheet shows 90 degrees. Some drawings show 180. The notch on your lock decides. If the shackle was not fully down, the new code was not saved. Test the first open, because one unit never left the factory zeros.
What if I forget the code?
You cannot reset a 145/40 whose code you no longer know. The sheet and the review notes both stop there. A locksmith, or a lock that has to be destroyed to come off, is the way off the locker. Writing the code on the door is not a backup. Amazon replacing a lock that never left 0000 is not ABUS recovering a code you set and lost.
How does a press-to-lock shackle work?
On the T65AL/40 and the 70IB/45, pressing the shackle down locks it without the key. On the 83WP/63 the Z-bar chooses that behaviour or key locking. Try it with the door open, and keep a key outside the shed. These amazon units are not keyed alike, so a second lock from the same page will not take the first key.
What should I put on a stiff lock?
Graphite or silicone, not oil, is the combination-lock note buyers repeat, because oil holds grit. It is not an ABUS laboratory result. A water-displacing spray appears in Aqua Safe reviews when water still enters from the top. The catalogue guarantee excludes lack of lubrication, tool attack and salt water. If the key has already snapped, stop.
The key snapped. Can I force it?
No. Forcing a snapped key, including in the jammed 83WP barrel one reviewer described, seats the stub deeper. A locksmith should take it from there. Drilling the lock is not a step on this page. The same stop applies to a forgotten 145 code and to a set you need keyed alike.
