ABUS padlock security level

Updated: October 2026

Security level 5 or 9 on an ABUS padlock is the brand’s own number until a second mark is printed for that model. An ABUS padlock security level runs from 1 to 10. BS EN 12320 grades run from 1 to 6. Sold Secure uses Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond. Prices and shackles are on the [ABUS padlock comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/abus-padlock). What you may quote before you buy is on the [ABUS padlock buying guide](/hub/door-and-window-security/abus-padlock/sub/abus-padlock-buying-guide). Peter F. used the 2023 catalogue, BSI’s description of the standard, Sold Secure’s 2025 list and the UK listings from 19 October 2026. ABUS counts from 1 to 10

ABUS calls the scale its Global Protection System. The 2023 UK catalogue sets it from 1 to 10 and prints no conversion into EN 12320. Quote a number only from the sheet or the listing in front of you. The 145/40 is level 4, at about £15.92. The 64TI/45 and the T65AL/40 are level 5. The 64TI/50HB80 is level 6, at about £18.49. The 83WP/63 is level 9, at about £47.41, for a high risk on ABUS’s own scale. That is not CEN grade 6. The 60/40, at about £6.75, prints no level. One reviewer said an advert claimed level 5 and the box did not. Do not assign level 5 to that 35 g body. The Aqua Safe listing also leaves the level blank. The 70IB/45 sheet says level 5. That sheet fact is not a number the amazon title printed.

BS EN 12320 counts from 1 to 6

BS EN 12320:2021 is the British Standard for mechanical padlocks and padlock fittings. BSI describes six security grades. Hoppe’s buyer-facing note separates a corrosion grade, often 1 indoors or 3 outdoors, from a security digit of 1 to 6. CEN 5 is that last digit. It is not ABUS’s last digit. The T65AL shows both marks at once. ABUS’s page gives it security level 5 and DIN EN 12320 class 2 together. Class 2 would not meet a request for EN class 5. The 83WP/63 prints ABUS level 9 and no EN class. A closed-shackle 83CS/70 is the body people cite for CEN 6, and it is not ASIN B004QXAIRM.

Sold Secure metals are a third list

Sold Secure’s 2025 catalogue maps approved padlocks like this: Bronze is CEN 3, Silver is CEN 4, Gold is CEN 5, and Diamond is CEN 6. That mapping is for products it has approved. Silver is not ABUS level 5. Diamond is not the 83WP/63’s level 9. These seven ASINs were not confirmed on that list. The Aqua Safe’s 4.6 from 1,173 reviews is a weather record, not a certificate. The 4.5 from 4,131 on the two Titalium listings is one family file. If a schedule asks for Sold Secure Gold, you need that model’s name on the list.

What to do with a policy sentence

Match the schedule’s words to paperwork, not to the nearest ABUS number. CEN 3 needs an EN 12320 grade 3, or a Sold Secure Bronze approval where the insurer accepts that metal. The T65AL’s class 2 would not meet a CEN 3 line. The 64TI/45’s ABUS level 5 states no EN grade. A closed shackle or a 5-lever padlock is none of these seven. Cycleplan’s July 2023 document is one closed-shackle example. Velosure’s wording speaks in CEN 3 to 6. A hasp does not inherit the padlock’s level. Fixings and the thin-door limit are on the shed and gate page.

Common questions

What is an ABUS security level?
It is ABUS’s Global Protection System, a scale from 1 to 10 in the 2023 UK padlock catalogue. A higher number is aimed at a higher risk on that scale. It is not, by itself, a BS EN 12320 grade or a Sold Secure rating. The catalogue prints no conversion table. Quote the number only when the sheet or the amazon.co.uk listing prints it.
Is level 5 the same as CEN grade 5?
No. The ceilings are 10 and 6, and ABUS publishes no conversion table. The T65AL/40 prints ABUS level 5 and EN 12320 class 2 together, at about £13.91. The digits differ because they are not the same test. The 64TI/45 also prints ABUS level 5 and does not print an EN grade.
What does level 9 mean on the 83WP/63?
The bullets say ABUS security level 9, for a high risk of theft, on an 11.5 mm shackle and a coated body at about £47.41. They do not say CEN grade 6. A closed-shackle 83-series lock is the one people cite for class 6, and it is not ASIN B004QXAIRM. A larger ABUS digit does not become a CEN grade.
Is Sold Secure Silver the same as ABUS level 5?
No. Sold Secure’s 2025 list maps Bronze to CEN 3, Silver to CEN 4, Gold to CEN 5 and Diamond to CEN 6, for products it has approved. ABUS level 5 is not on that mapping. Diamond is not the 83WP/63’s level 9. These seven listings were not confirmed as Sold Secure approved.
What level is the brass 60/40?
The amazon.co.uk listing does not print one. Do not take level 5 from an advert or from a series table whose dimensions describe a larger body. One reviewer found the box silent where the advert had claimed a level. At about £6.75 and 35 g it can still be a small clasp. That is a different claim from a printed level.
If my insurer says CEN 3, which of these qualifies?
None of them on the paperwork in this set. The only EN class stated here is class 2 on the T65AL, which is below 3. The other locks print an ABUS level or, for the 70IB/45 and the 60/40, no level. CEN 3 has to be on a sheet for that model, or the insurer has to accept a Sold Secure metal they have named.
