ABUS padlock buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You already want an ABUS padlock, and the staple decides whether it will close. Prices on these seven amazon.co.uk listings run from about £6.75 to about £47.41. This ABUS padlock buying guide is the order: measure the staple, read an ABUS security level only if this listing prints one, separate rain from theft, then choose a key or a code. The seven cards are on the [ABUS padlock comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/abus-padlock). How those numbers sit next to BS EN 12320 is on the [ABUS padlock security level](/hub/door-and-window-security/abus-padlock/sub/abus-padlock-security-level) page. Peter F. checked the listings in October 2026, not in a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Measure the hole and the clearance

Start with the staple, not the price. The shackle has to pass the hole, clear the hasp and the door edge, and leave the body against the hasp. Lockshop Direct’s order is the hole, that stack and both clearances, then the shortest shackle that still fits, because spare bar is leverage. The 64TI/45 has a 7 mm shackle, 24 mm of clear height and 25 mm of clear width, at about £6.99. The 64TI/50HB80 is an 8 mm shackle and 80 mm of clear height, at about £18.49, for a chain or a deep staple. Skip it when 24 mm would already close. The 83WP/63 is 11.5 mm, with 35 mm of clear height. If that bar will not pass, the printed ABUS security level 9 does not help.

Read the ABUS level only if it is printed

ABUS’s scale runs from 1 to 10. It is not a BS EN 12320 grade. Use the number only when this listing or the sheet prints it. The 145/40 is level 4, at about £15.92. The 64TI/45 and the T65AL/40 are level 5. The 64TI/50HB80 is level 6. The 83WP/63 is level 9, at about £47.41. ABUS’s page gives the T65AL security level 5 and EN 12320 class 2. Level 5 there is not class 5. The 60/40, at about £6.75, prints no ABUS level. One reviewer said an advert claimed level 5 and the box did not. The Aqua Safe listing also leaves the level blank, even though the 70IB/45 sheet says level 5.

Separate rain from theft

A higher ABUS number is about theft. A cap, drainage or a coated body is about rain. Neither Titalium listing describes a cap. Shared reviews include a back gate with no early rust and a lock that seized after showers. Treat that as one family of 4,131 reviews. The 70IB/45, at about £19, describes a cap, drainage and an encapsulated brass body. Across 1,173 reviews, several buyers say water still reaches the mechanism from the top. The 83WP/63 adds a coated body, a cylinder cover and sealed shackle holes when the risk and an 11.5 mm hole justify about £47.41. Leave the 145/40 indoors. Reviews include rust and a seized wheel within two months outside. Hasp screws are on the shed and gate page.

Keys, codes, and what Amazon does not supply

These amazon units are not supplied keyed alike. Alike keying is an ABUS sales-office order, not a second click on the same ASIN. Two 64TI/45 locks can need two keys until a locksmith rekeys them. The highlight says two keys. Aqua Safe reviews also say two, and only two is a repeated complaint. The 145/40 starts at 0000 on ABUS’s sheet. There is no recovery if you forget the new code or set it with the shackle not fully down. One review describes a combination felt out in minutes. The T65AL/40, the Aqua Safe and, with the Z-bar set that way, the 83WP/63 lock when the shackle is pressed. Count the keys before you shut the shed.

Common questions

What should I measure before I compare prices?
Measure the staple hole, the thickness the shackle must pass, and the clear height and width so the body can sit against the hasp. Then take the shortest shackle that still fits. A cheaper lock that will not enter the hole is not a saving. The 11.5 mm bar on the 83WP/63 and the 80 mm clear height on the 64TI/50HB80 are the two sizes that most often fail a photo order.
Is ABUS security level 5 the same as CEN grade 5?
No. ABUS counts from 1 to 10. BS EN 12320 grades padlocks from 1 to 6. The T65AL/40 is printed as ABUS level 5 and EN 12320 class 2 together, so the digits are not interchangeable. A 5 on an ABUS title is not CEN grade 5 and not Sold Secure Gold.
Which of these locks is actually for rain?
The 70IB/45 listing describes a cap, drainage and an encapsulated body, at about £19. The 83WP/63 adds a coated body and sealed shackle holes at ABUS level 9, about £47.41. Aqua Safe reviews still report water from the top, so neither listing means waterproof. Keep the 145/40 indoors.
Will two of the same Amazon listing share a key?
Do not assume it. These units are not sold keyed alike. Alike keying is an ABUS sales-office order. Two 64TI/45 padlocks from the same page can need two different keys until a locksmith rekeys them. Two keys in one box are a spare for that lock, not a match for the next one.
When is the 80 mm shackle the wrong upgrade?
When the staple would already close on the 64TI/45’s 24 mm of clear height. The 64TI/50HB80, at about £18.49, reaches a deep staple or a chain and prints ABUS level 6. It also leaves much more bar outside the body, and that extra bar is leverage.
Is the 145/40 a shed lock?
The listing points it at bags, lockers, cupboards and toolboxes, at ABUS level 4 and about £15.92. Reviews include rust and stuck wheels after outdoor use. A wet shed door is a poor match. A forgotten code cannot be recovered. The factory code on ABUS’s 145 sheet is 0000.
