Disc padlock for a shed or gate

Updated: October 2026

The shed door is shut, the disc is locked, and the hinge screws on the outside still take a normal screwdriver. A disc padlock for a shed or gate helps only when the hasp and the hinges are as awkward to attack as the shackle. Series choice stays on the [buying guide](/hub/door-and-window-security/abus-disc-padlock/sub/abus-disc-padlock-buying-guide). Prices are on the [ABUS disc padlock comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/abus-disc-padlock). We did not test a shed. The disc hides the shackle

A conventional padlock leaves a loop of shackle that cutters can bite. The Diskus hides that loop. ProtectUK asks for closed-shackle padlocks on wooden shed and garage doors. An angle grinder does not need a proud loop, and these listings do not say the lock is grinder-proof. Measuring is on the how to fit an ABUS disc padlock page.

Two fixing points, not one

ProtectUK suggests two hasps on a wooden shed or garage door, one high and one low. One hasp in the middle leaves the other end as a lever. Hasp 140 is written for a Diskus of about 60–80 mm. A 70 mm body sits in that band. A 50 mm 24IB does not. A side gate often has only one place for a hasp, so the hinges still count. Which listing to hang is on the best ABUS Diskus padlock page.

Hinges and the frame

If the hinge screws face the garden, the door can be lifted off with the disc still locked. ProtectUK asks for security screws on external hinges. Baptist Insurance says the same with security screws or coach bolts, on every hinge you can see. If the screws spin in damp timber, the plate is decoration. When the frame crumbles, stop and get a joiner or a locksmith. Baptist also says not to keep the best tools in the shed if you can avoid it.

Shackle thickness on this comparison

Baptist’s shed note treats an unshielded shackle under about 10 mm as the thin one, unless something shields it. The disc is that shield, not a waiver for a 6.5 mm shackle on a wide staple. In this set the 24IB/50 is 6.5 mm, the 24IB/60 is 8 mm, and the 220/70, the best value 24IB/70 and the top pick 20/70 are 10 mm. The 6.5 mm lock is the right stainless disc only when the eye will not accept 10 mm. None of these diameters is a CEN grade.

What to tell the insurer

Ask what the policy names, and quote that rather than the ABUS house number. A closed shackle is what a Diskus has. EN 12320 Grade 3, or Sold Secure Bronze or above, is a certificate these listings do not state. Home Security 7, 8 or 9 does not convert into that grade. A disc on a shed is not a BS 3621 lock for a home’s final exit. The spare key stays in the house, because these locks are key-retaining.

Common questions

Will a disc padlock stop bolt cutters on a shed?
It makes the usual cutter attack harder, because the shackle sits inside the body and there is little metal to bite, which is the closed-shackle point Churchill and ProtectUK describe. It does not stop an angle grinder, and it does not help if the staple stands proud of a slot that was too small. Fit the hasp so the disc actually covers the shackle. Then look at the hinges, which cutters never needed.
Do I need one hasp or two?
Two, on a wooden shed or garage door: one high and one low, which is the ProtectUK suggestion. One hasp leaves a lever at the other end of the leaf. A single gate may only have one honest place for a hasp, in which case the hinges and the slamming edge have to do the rest. Hasp 140 suits a Diskus of about 60–80 mm, not the 50 mm body.
What about the hinges?
Replace outside screw heads with security screws or coach bolts, on every hinge you can reach. A locked disc is still locked to a door that can be lifted off its hinges. That is the failure Baptist and ProtectUK are pointing at. Do it before you congratulate yourself on the padlock. If the screws are on the inside of an inward-opening door, the job is smaller, and the hasp side still matters.
Is a 6.5 mm shackle enough on a gate?
Only when the eye is too small for 8 mm or 10 mm and the disc fully shields what remains. Baptist’s under about 10 mm line is a rule of thumb for an unshielded shackle. The 24IB/50 is 6.5 mm and opens about 8 mm by 13 mm. It is the tight-eye lock. It is a poor match for a wide shed staple and for hasp 140. The 10 mm shackles are the 70 mm models in this set.
Does this satisfy my home insurance?
Only if your wording asks for something these listings actually state. A closed shackle is visible in the product. EN 12320 and Sold Secure are not stated on these ASINs. ABUS level 8 is not CEN grade 3. Read the schedule, and do not assume a dearer disc prints a mark that is absent. The MLA note is an example of what some policies ask for. It is not a promise of cover.
What if the timber is rotten?
Stop drilling. Screws that spin will not hold hasp 140, and a second padlock on the same soft frame fails the same way. A joiner or a locksmith needs to see whether there is sound timber to fix into. Until then, do not store the tools you would mind losing in that shed. A stiffer cylinder does not stiffen rotten wood.
