ABUS 24IB or 26

Updated: October 2026

The two 70 mm discs look like the same lock in different boxes. ABUS 24IB or 26 is the choice between a marine stainless shackle and a cylinder the listing says is protected against drilling and pulling. Both state level 8. The cards are on the [ABUS disc padlock comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/abus-disc-padlock). How the rest of the range fits this fork is on the [buying guide](/hub/door-and-window-security/abus-disc-padlock/sub/abus-disc-padlock-buying-guide). We did not run a lab test. Same size, different job

Each body is about 70 mm, each shackle is 10 mm, and each slot is about 17 mm by 20 mm. Each title states ABUS level 8. What changes is the shackle metal and the cylinder claim. The 24IB/70 is all-stainless, with a covered pin cylinder and marine wording. The 26 adds drill-and-pull resistance and a hardened alloy shackle. Neither listing states BS EN 12320 or Sold Secure. If salt air is the priority, take the 24IB, the best value. If the page must say drill and pull, take the 26. If you need the ABUS-Plus cylinder, leave both.

Choose the 24IB for salt

The 2023 UK catalogue marks the 24IB marine Yes: a stainless body, inners and shackle. On amazon.co.uk the 70 mm is B0001MQQQY at about £36.00, with a cover and sea and harbour wording. The 50 mm and the 60 mm stay in that family at stated level 7, for a staple too short for 17 mm. The 4.3 from 715 ratings is a shared pool with those smaller pages. Reviewers praise the stainless build and also describe jamming. That is not a reason to switch to the 26 on the coast. The bullet weight of 320 g disagrees with the item line of 200 g.

Choose the 26 for the cylinder claim

Take the 26/70, B000P5RS6Y at about £43.77, when the listing must say the cylinder is protected against drilling and pulling. It is stated level 8, 4.4 from 90 ratings. One anecdote of an attempted attack is one story, not a grade. The ABUS series page describes a hardened alloy shackle. The highlight says a stainless body and a special-steel shackle, and the attribute block says hardened steel and zinc. Do not describe the 26 as the marine lock. Some UK retailers call it a CEN 3 lock. That claim is not on this ASIN.

Leave both when you need the Plus cylinder

Leave the pair when you need the ABUS-Plus cylinder. That is the top pick, the 20/70, at about £49.65 and stated level 9. The catalogue marks it marine No, and the lock-type line says Combination Lock while the box includes a key. Named picks are on the best ABUS Diskus padlock page. The 220/70 at about £19.60 is stated level 7, and the wrong saving if you were choosing the 24IB and the 26 for a reason. Fitting is on the how to fit an ABUS disc padlock page.

Common questions

If both say level 8, what is the real difference?
The shackle metal and the cylinder claim. The 24IB/70 is the all-stainless marine lock with a covered pin cylinder. The 26/70 adds drill-and-pull protection in the bullet and a hardened alloy shackle on the ABUS series page. Body size, stated level, shackle diameter and clearance are too close to separate them. Choose from the weather or from the attack you are trying to slow, not from the digit 8.
Is the 26 shackle stainless?
Not in the way the 24IB sheet means stainless. The ABUS 26 page describes a special-alloy hardened shackle. The amazon highlight on B000P5RS6Y says a stainless body and a special-steel shackle, and the attribute block says hardened steel and zinc. The marine all-stainless description belongs to the 24IB. If that description is why you are buying, the 26 is the wrong side of this fork.
Does the 24IB/50 count as the marine choice?
Yes, if the gap is too small for a 70 mm body. The 50 mm and the 60 mm are still the 24IB, which the catalogue marks marine Yes, and they are stated level 7 rather than 8. The 50 mm opens only about 8 mm by 13 mm on a 6.5 mm shackle. A small staple does not push you onto the 26.
Is the 26 a CEN 3 lock?
Not on the evidence used here. Retailer pages have used that phrase. This amazon.co.uk listing and the ABUS 26 page we used do not state EN 12320 or Sold Secure. Home Security 8 is the ABUS scale. CEN grades run from 1 to 6 under BS EN 12320:2012. Do not tell an insurer that level 8 is grade 3 unless your paperwork for that exact model says so.
When do I leave both and take the 20?
When the Plus cylinder is the requirement and you can accept marine No. The 20/70 is about £49.65, stated level 9, with about the same 70 mm clearance as these two. It is the wrong exit for a harbour. It is also the wrong exit if you only wanted the cheaper of two level 8 discs. The combination-lock attribute on that page conflicts with the key cylinder in the bullet.
When is the 220 enough?
When stated level 7 and about £19.60 are acceptable for a 70 mm closed shackle, and you do not need marine stainless or drill-and-pull wording. The clearance is 17 mm by 19.5 mm, close to the 17 mm by 20 mm of the level 8 pair. Skip it if those missing claims were the reason you compared the 24IB and the 26 in the first place.
