How to fit an ABUS disc padlock

Updated: October 2026

The disc is in your hand, the hasp is still in the packet, and the key will not come out of the plug. How to fit an ABUS disc padlock is a measuring job first and a drilling job second. This page does not rank the seven listings. Series choice stays on the [buying guide](/hub/door-and-window-security/abus-disc-padlock/sub/abus-disc-padlock-buying-guide). Measure before you drill

Close the lock on the staple before you mark a screw hole. The 24IB/50 is about 8 mm by 13 mm with a 6.5 mm shackle. The 70 mm models, including the best value 24IB/70 and the top pick 20, are about 17 mm high on a 10 mm shackle. Hasp 140 suits a Diskus of about 60–80 mm. Leave the 50 mm off that hasp.

Flush door or overlay

The 120 mm hasp 140 is the flush door. The 190 mm hasp is the overlay or the corner. Pick the length from the door you can see. Offer the hasp up with the lock clicked onto the staple, then mark the holes. If the disc fouls the door edge, you are on the wrong length or the wrong body size. Do not pack the gap with washers. Two hasps on a wooden shed are on the shed and gate page. One hasp is still one fixing.

The key stays in until you lock

The ABUS sheets say the key is needed to lock and that it stays in the plug while the shackle is open. That is key-retaining. You unlock, the shackle pops, and the key remains. Only after you lock does the key come out. Try it once at the kitchen table. If that works on the bench and fails on the door, the staple is holding the shackle short of fully closed. Keyed alike is not stated on these ASINs. Hang the spare in the house before you close the door.

When the keyway goes stiff

A new Diskus is often stiff. Reviews on the 220, the shared 24IB pool and the 20/70 mention keys that bend or snap when they are forced. Use a PTFE spray, such as GT85, or a dry lock lubricant. UK lock guides treat WD-40 as a water dispersant, not the lubricant you leave in the plug. Graphite mixed with oil turns into a paste. Locks Direct names ABUS PS88, which these Diskus sheets do not print, so treat it as a trade suggestion. If the key starts to twist, stop.

Stop and get help

Stop when the key has already broken in the cylinder. Do not drill the plug. Stop if the frame is rotten, or if the door is a home’s final exit. A disc does not stand in for a BS 3621 lock. Which model replaces the wrong series is on the best ABUS Diskus padlock page.

Common questions

Which hasp length is for a flush door?
The 140/120. ABUS describes the 120 mm hasp for a flush door and the 140/190 for an overlay or a corner. Both are meant to shield a Diskus of about 60–80 mm, with concealed screws and a hardened staple. The length follows the way the door meets the frame. A longer hasp does not add a security grade the lock does not state.
Will hasp 140 take the 50 mm Diskus?
Not in the sense ABUS wrote the hasp. The note is for bodies of about 60–80 mm. The 24IB/50 has an 8 mm vertical opening and a 6.5 mm shackle, so the staple on a 140 is often too tall, and the shield is drawn around a larger disc. Use the 50 mm on a short eye. Use a 60 mm or 70 mm body when you are fitting a 140.
Why can I not remove the key when the lock is open?
Because these Diskus models are key-retaining on the ABUS sheets. The key stays in while the shackle is open, and it comes out after you have locked. That is the design on the 220, 24IB, 26 and 20 sheets, even when the amazon.co.uk bullet only says key lock. Try the sequence on the bench before you decide the cylinder is jammed.
What should I put in the keyway?
A PTFE spray or a dry lubricant, used sparingly, then worked with the key. WD-40 is a poor long-term lubricant for a lock that lives outside. Do not mix graphite with oil. If the key begins to twist, stop. A cover that is slow to fall shut, which reviewers mention on the shared 24IB reviews, is a prompt to keep the plug clean, not a reason to flood it.
What if the key has already snapped in the plug?
Leave it. Do not drive the broken piece in with another key, and do not drill the cylinder as a home repair. A locksmith is the person who extracts a snapped key without destroying the hasp. The reviews that describe soft keys and outdoor seizure are the warning, not a method. Once the door is open again, keep the spare in the house.
When do I stop and call someone?
Call when the key is snapped, when the timber will not hold screws, when the insurer’s wording names a grade these listings do not state, or when the door is the final exit of a home. A stiff new keyway that eases with a dry lubricant is still your job. A frame that moves when the hasp is pulled is not. Replacing the model comes after that, and only if the staple measurements still match.
