Best door chain

Updated: October 2026

You want one chain for a normal timber front door, and the titles on amazon.co.uk all seem to say it is the best door chain. For solid timber, where a screw can reach the lock rail, the Yale V-WS6-CH is the pick because it is the only listing that prints DHF TS 003. Skip it if you need a wide gap, or if you must not drill. Prices are the shelf figures saved on 19 October 2026. Every row is on the [door chain comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/door-chain). Peter F. compared the listings and the UK review notes. Best for a timber front door

The Yale V-WS6-CH is the top pick at about £8.80: polished chrome, a stated 13.5 cm, 4.5 from 659 reviews. Buyers say it is shorter than the photos, and the link count has varied. If the frame gap is wide, this is the wrong pick. ERA describes TS 003 as 200 abuse impacts at 100 N, then three attack impacts, with the gap held to 25 mm at release or 76 mm on guard, and a way out. A UK review says a hard kick pulled the screws out. The title says PVCu and wood. A bullet says wooden doors. Secured by Design showed on a manufacturer table for this ASIN on 19 October 2026, and it is not in the saved listing. The Master Locksmiths Association say a police-approved chain starts at around £10. Checks before a name are on the door chain buying guide.

When the narrow XFORT is the better buy

The XFORT at about £9.99 is 4.5 from 2,220 reviews. UK reviewers call the body chunky and a step up from a thin chain that had broken. One buyer reports a gap large enough for a small parcel. Buy it when you want that narrow chrome shape and you will replace the screws. It has no printed test and no printed length. Heads snap, one pack was a screw short, one bracket arrived bent, and chrome flaked. No uPVC instructions were in the pack. One buyer found it a little short for a dog. DIY Doctor's fixing guide is screws of at least 25 mm into sound timber. Fitting on timber is on how to fit a door chain.

Chains to leave on the shelf

The SOL pack is the best value in a narrow sense: two chains for about £4.99, 4.3 from 162 reviews, called sturdy for the price. One order arrived brass instead of chrome, the chain had fewer links than the photo, and one wooden door would not take them. It is not a quieter way to buy the Yale. Leave FAST-FX and LIAMGUS if you want a chain UK reviews say stays straight. FAST-FX is rank 1 at about £4.99, and the texts describe bending, a break, a loose hook and outdoor rust. LIAMGUS at about £4.59 is called thin, and it broke when a child pushed the door.

Who should leave this shortlist

KIPTVO is 5.0 from one review, and the listing disagrees about whether it is tool-free. ZEQUNAFENG is about £4.13 with a stated length of about 17 cm and no star line. Ainkou is 4.7 from three reviews. The black MOXYOY is 4.6 from seven. None of those files shows the bend pattern already on FAST-FX and LIAMGUS, and none prints TS 003. If the door is uPVC, this shortlist is not permission to drill. For solid timber, with screws that reach the rail, buy the WS6 and accept the short length. If you wanted the narrow body and you will replace the screws, take the XFORT.

Common questions

Which door chain should I buy?
For a solid timber front door, buy the Yale V-WS6-CH at about £8.80 if you want the only chain in this set that prints TS 003, and you can live with a stated 13.5 cm that reviews say is shorter than the photo. If you want the narrow chrome shape and the largest review file, and you will bin the screws, the XFORT at about £9.99 is the alternative. If the door is uPVC, this pick does not transfer.
Is the best seller the best chain?
Not in this file. FAST-FX is rank 1 in Door Chains in the raw data, at about £4.99 and 4.2 from 628 reviews, and UK reviews describe bending, a break when a child opened the door, a loose hook and outdoor rust. A same-day amazon.co.uk best-seller list can put a different chain first. Neither list is a test. The criterion on this page is the printed TS 003 line plus the failure the reviews repeat.
Yale WS6 or Yale P1037?
Take the WS6 when you want TS 003 and a stated 13.5 cm at about £8.80. Take the P1037 when you want the brass finish at about £11.10 and a frame wide enough for the plate, and you accept that this saved listing does not print TS 003. The P1037 reviews describe plating rather than solid brass, a plate a couple of millimetres too wide, and short screws. They are not two finishes of one tested chain.
Does the best chain stop a burglar?
No. West Yorkshire Police say a chain will not secure a locked door against burglary, and you should identify the caller first. TS 003 is a chain-and-limiter test with gap limits and a requirement that you can still get out. A UK review of the Yale says a hard kick pulled the screws out. The lock still does the night-time job.
What if my door is uPVC?
Do not treat the timber pick as a uPVC kit. The Yale title says PVCu and a bullet says wooden doors, and the supplied screws are described as solid-wood screws. FAST-FX and XFORT also claim uPVC in the title without a jack-nut kit in the saved listing. Read door chain for a uPVC door before you drill, and ask the door company if the warranty is still live.
