Door security bar buying guide

Updated: October 2026

This door security bar buying guide is the check before the basket. A telescopic pole can add resistance from inside once the lock is already shut. A small under-door plate is a different object, and neither replaces the lock. The [door security bar comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/door-security-bar) lists the amazon.co.uk lengths and shelf prices, taken around 19 October 2026. Peter F. did not test the bars in a lab. Swing, handle height and floor decide whether a listing is worth opening. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

Most listings here are handle-to-floor poles: a yoke under the lever and a foot on the floor, for an inward door you can release without screws. The DoorJammer is the other object, about 210 g, and it needs roughly 3 mm under an inswing door. A weather seal can block that plate. Travel, or a room with no useful lever, is on the door security bar versus portable jammer page. Entry listings are about £12.99 to £16.99, the middle band about £18 to £24, and the AceMining two-pack about £35.99.

Measure swing, handle and track

A handle-to-floor brace and the under-door plate are for doors that open towards you. An outward leaf leaves the yoke with nothing to sit under. On a slider the pole usually goes in the track, and lift-out stays separate, on the sliding door security bar page. Measure the finished floor to the underside of the lever. Defender runs about 73–113 cm and Amazon Basics about 73.6–114 cm. Pindex at about 110–140 cm reaches a high lever and misses a low one. AceMining’s 21–46 inch claim is about 53–117 cm, yet one review describes a pin near 53 cm and the next near 70 cm. The setting sequence is on the how to use a door security bar page.

Floor, joints and the load line

The kilogram figure is a seller claim. Defender’s listing names laminate, lino, vinyl, wood, marble, carpet and concrete, yet reviews on AceMining, Defender, Amazon Basics and HOMGEN still describe slip on smooth floors. A loose rug is worse, because the foot walks with the rug. Reviews also mention flex, pins that pop out, and a plastic bolt in the foot. HOMGEN is called weak near full extension. Defender, eSynic and HOMGEN state 250 kg, and AceMining states 400 lb, with no UKAS report in the extracts. Shared star lines on AceMining, eSynic and LuLobtg repeat one review text across colours.

What the bar does not certify

Approved Document Q and PAS 24:2022+A1:2024 apply to new doorsets. BS 3621 is the lock standard. Secured by Design lists the DoorJammer against relative clauses of that PAS in report TR2340-Doors at Winkhaus, and that note does not cover the other eleven listings. An ANSI line on Amazon Basics has no standard number. Ask the Police question Q1098 treats a security bar as an extra. In a rented flat, choose a brace you can remove without drilling, and leave a flat entrance fire door unaltered. A track bar must not block escape. Call a locksmith if the frame moves or the multipoint lock has failed.

Common questions

What do I measure before I buy a door security bar?
Measure whether the door opens towards you, then the distance from the finished floor to the underside of the lever. On a slider, measure the clear track and treat lift-out as a separate fitting. A lever at 60 cm can sit between pin holes even when the carton says about 53–117 cm. If the frame moves or the leaf lifts, call a locksmith.
Does a door security bar work if the door opens outwards?
Handle-to-floor braces and the under-door plate in this set are for inward-opening doors. When the leaf swings away, the yoke has no lever to sit under and the plate has no inward gap to wedge. A patio slider is different: the pole goes in the track, and lift-out still needs its own device. A longer pole does not change an outward swing.
Is 250 kg or 400 lb a test of the bar?
Those figures are seller claims: 250 kg on Defender, eSynic and HOMGEN, and 400 lb on AceMining. The extracts include no UKAS report, and the bars were not loaded for this page. Reviews mention flex, pins coming out and feet that slide. Treat the load line as advertising until a named test says otherwise.
Will a door security bar slip on laminate?
It can. Defender’s listing names laminate, and reviews on AceMining, Defender, Amazon Basics and HOMGEN still report slip on smooth floors. A rug under the foot is worse, because the foot and the rug move together. Set the foot on the bare board and see whether it walks before you rely on it overnight.
Is a removable door security bar allowed in a rented flat?
A brace you can remove without screws avoids drilling a rented frame, and you still use the lock already fitted. Leave a flat entrance fire door unaltered, and practise releasing the bar so it does not block the way out. In a shared house, keyless exit from inside is the landlord’s job. If the tenancy forbids extra fittings, ask before you mark the wood.
Does PAS 24 apply to a door security bar?
PAS 24:2022+A1:2024 tests a doorset, alongside Approved Document Q for new homes. A telescopic pole under a handle sits outside that test. Secured by Design notes the DoorJammer against relative clauses of that PAS, and that note does not cover the other braces here. A tested doorset is a job for a locksmith or a door fitter, and BS 3621 still belongs to the lock.
