Portable door lock for hotel rooms you cannot drill

Updated: October 2026

A portable door lock for a hotel is a small kit you carry because the room is not yours to drill. The door already has the building's lock, and you want a second thing for the night. Screwed sash jammers, concealed bolts and patio handle clamps stay at home. The [door security comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/door-security) lists the whole set. Three products here are actually packable. A floor bar can be tool-free and still be the wrong object in a suitcase. Peter F. checked the amazon.co.uk listings in October 2026. There was no lab test. Three things you can pack, and the one to pack first

DoorJammer DJ3 is the first pack when the door swings in and you can see a gap. amazon.co.uk lists it at about £22.72 and 210 g, with 4.4 from 2,799 reviews. UK texts mention hotels and Travelodge. There is no battery. Slide the plate under the door and turn the screw until the foot is firm. The emergency release is an upward pull. Secured by Design lists it as a secondary device. That does not certify the hotel door. HNHMT at about £9.14 is a latch plus an alarm wedge. Only five texts in the review notes were labelled United Kingdom, and those say the lock missed a Premier Inn door while the wedge still worked. A 9-volt battery is not included. Mengshen at about £8.98 is the wedge alone. With the alarm off it is only a wedge. Leave a floor bar at home. It weighs about 1 kg.

The gap and the latch decide the night

DoorJammer needs at least 3 mm and, on the maker's FAQ, no more than about 33 mm. A weather strip blocks the plate, and most uPVC doors lack the gap. If your fingers cannot pass under, the jammer will not. UK reviews add skew as you tighten, and a less stable feel on carpet. Tighten until firm, then stop. The HNHMT latch works when the strike matches one of the two hole sizes. A Premier Inn door in the UK reviews did not. If the claw will not sit, use the wedge. Mengshen can still creep on very smooth tile. Types for a door you own are in the door security buying guide.

The battery, the siren, and getting out

Buy the 9-volt battery before you travel. Mengshen and HNHMT both omit it. Until it is fitted, the Mengshen siren does nothing, though the wedge can still sit under the door. The DJ3 has no cell. The siren is a wake-up, not a lock. Treat 120 decibels as print. DoorJammer's emergency release is an upward pull. Practise it once. A wedge lifts out with a toe. If the hotel door opens outward, or it is a slider, none of the three is the right brace.

Halls, rented rooms, and what to leave behind

Halls follow the hotel rule when the agreement forbids holes. DoorJammer, the HNHMT latch and Mengshen leave the door unmarked. A sash jammer, a swing bar or Yale PM444 means screws or a mortice. Leave those at home. A floor bar is a poor three-night kit because of weight and flex at long settings. These devices sit beside the building's lock. If the hall door is a fire door, ask before you add anything that could stop it closing. Pack DoorJammer if you have checked 3 mm, or the wedge plus a 9-volt battery, and test it on night one.

Common questions

Will a portable lock fit every hotel door?
No. DoorJammer fits inswinging doors with at least 3 mm underneath and a flat floor, and weather strips block it. The HNHMT latch missed a Premier Inn door in UK reviews. Test the strike or the gap on night one, and keep the wedge as the fallback if the claw will not sit.
Do I need a battery for DoorJammer?
Not for the DJ3 in this comparison. It is a steel brace with a screw and an upward quick-release, at about £22.72 and 210 g. Mengshen and the HNHMT wedge need a 9-volt battery, and the listings do not include one. Buy the cell before you travel.
Is the alarm wedge a lock?
It is a wedge that can sound if a battery is fitted and the switch is on. Mengshen's listing says it still works as a doorstop with the power off. It will not replace the hotel lock, and the decibel figure was not tested here. Some reviewers kept the wedge and gave up on the siren.
Can I use this in student halls?
Yes, when you cannot drill and the door opens inward with a usable gap or strike. DoorJammer and the wedges leave no screw holes. A sash jammer or a Yale bolt does not belong in a room you must hand back unmarked.
What if the jammer feels crooked?
UK DoorJammer reviews describe skew and a less stable feel on carpet. Loosen the screw, centre the plate under the handle, and tighten only until the foot is firm. If the pile stops the plate sitting flat, use the wedge rather than more force.
What should stay at home?
Yale PM444 bolts, Sandiyago sash jammers, the Defender swing bar and the hzuisst clamp. They need screws, a mortice, or a pair of horizontal handles. A full-length floor bar is a bulky bet in a cabin bag if you have not measured the handle height.
