Best soft close cabinet hinges

Updated: October 2026

A kitchen cupboard that slams is usually the hinge, and you hear the last few degrees. You want a damper, and a search for the best soft close cabinet hinges mixes that damper with a spring that only pulls the door shut. Five listings in our [hinges comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/hinges) claim a damper. The pair with the most reviews says it has none. Peter F. read those amazon.co.uk pages in October 2026. We did not lab-test them, and none of the pages prints a cycle count or a noise figure. Prices are GBP as Amazon showed them, and they move. A damper is not a spring

Soft close and self close do different jobs, even when a title uses both. A soft-close hinge uses a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder to slow the door over the last part of the travel. BuildWiz UK puts that damped stretch at roughly the last 15 to 20 degrees, which is what stops the knock on the carcase. A self-close hinge uses a spring that pulls the door shut once it passes a point in the arc, and that spring does not cushion the impact. Häfele's UK guide separates that cylinder from a spring which only pulls the door shut, and notes that sellers mix the names. Trust the bullet, not the word soft in the title. If the name says soft close and a bullet says there is no soft-close function, that denial is the description. None of these listings prints a BS EN 15570 level, so there is no class to quote.

The listings that claim a damper

The top pick, the HBL clip-on, states soft close, 110° and full overlay only. The title says 10 pieces and the unit count says 2. If the door is half overlay, skip it. Screws will not convert the crank, which is the point of the full overlay or half overlay page. The best value, the APACALI 24-pack, states soft close. The title says full overlay and one bullet says inset, and one review said a pair in the pack did not damp. Test one hinge before you fit a run. AOLISHENG states a slow pull at about 90° for a blind corner. That is the seller's phrase, not a figure we measured. Two Furniware surface packs claim a damper and need no 35 mm cup. Reviews of the 90° pack say there is no gap adjustment. The 170° pack states 15 kg and doors of 16–30 mm. Fitting a cup is in how to fit cabinet hinges.

The pair that is not soft close

The biggest review file here is not a soft-close pick. Furniware's 110° pair is a sprung full-overlay hinge for a 35 mm cup, depth 11.5 mm, for doors of 14–22 mm. It was about £10.99 with 4.5 from 640 reviews, and the listing states that it has no soft-close function. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 says goods should match their description, and that denial is the description. Nearby Furniware packs do claim a damper. This one does not. The spring can still draw the door shut if you do not mind the knock. It is slide-on, while the HBL hinge is clip-on, so a damped replacement often needs its own plate. Those 640 reviews describe a hinge the seller says does not damp.

What a named soft-close hinge costs beside them

Blum CLIP top with BLUMOTION is the trade name for an integrated damper, and it is not in this set. In October 2026 a 10-piece CLIP top BLUMOTION pack was about £39.51 on amazon.co.uk. Stay with this set if the overlay, angle and thickness already match a stated damper. A damper does not add capacity. The only stated load here is 15 kg, on the Furniware 170° surface hinge. None of these listings is fire-door hardware. The wider shelf is in the hinge buying guide.

Common questions

What is the difference between a soft-close and a self-close cabinet hinge?
A soft-close hinge damps the last part of the swing, about the last 15 to 20 degrees, with a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder. A self-close hinge uses a spring that pulls the door shut, and that spring does not soften the impact. Häfele's UK guide says sellers often confuse the two on a product title.
Which hinges in this set actually say they have a damper?
Five do: HBL (soft close, 110°, full overlay only, about £20.99), APACALI (soft close, about £22.55), AOLISHENG (slow pull, about 90°, blind corner, about £8.68), Furniware's 90° surface pack (about £12.99) and Furniware's 170° surface pack (hydraulic damper, 15 kg, about £20.99). Figures are from amazon.co.uk in October 2026 and they move. Slow pull is the seller's wording.
Why is the Furniware 110° pair not a soft-close pick?
Furniware's 110° pair is sprung and full overlay, for a 35 mm cup, at about £10.99 with 4.5 from 640 reviews, and the listing says it has no soft-close function. The spring can finish the close. It will not slow the impact. The large review file shows that people buy it, not that it damps. Follow the bullet that denies the damper.
Is the HBL pack 10 hinges or 2?
The HBL clip-on states soft close, 110° and full overlay at about £20.99, with 4.8 from 89 reviews, and the quantity disagrees with itself. The title says 10 pieces and the unit count says 2. Buy it only if you can live with that, and count the hinges on arrival. It is not a reliable written pack of ten.
Can I put a soft-close hinge on a half-overlay door?
Only when the hinge is made for half overlay. HBL says full overlay only, so it is the wrong crank if the door shares a stile. APACALI says full overlay in the title and inset in a bullet, which contradicts itself rather than specifying half overlay. Adjustment screws will not change the crank. Match the overlay first, then look for a damper.
Do I need a 35 mm hole for every damped hinge here?
No. Cup hinges need the 35 mm hole. Furniware's 90° and 170° surface packs state a damper and screw to the face, which is the route when you cannot bore. Reviews of the 90° pair say you cannot tweak the gap, and the 170° pair is stated for 16–30 mm doors and 15 kg. A surface hinge will not adjust like a cup hinge on a plate.
