How to use a door stop alarm

Updated: October 2026

You have the wedge, the door is the one you will sleep behind, and you do not want the first lesson to be a siren in your ear or silence at 2am. How to use a door stop alarm is a short sequence: power off, cell or charge in, thin end to an inward door, one test on the floor, then a low setting. If that test fails, the stop does not belong under that door. Models and prices are on the [alarm door stop comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/alarm-door-stop). Fit the power with the alarm off

Switch the alarm off before the cell goes in. An armed Mengshen can scream while you seat the PP3. KERUI, Mengshen, and Lomuna each take one 9V that is not in the box. If the case gets hot or smells of burning, stop and take the cell out. Jognee names 3 x LR44 and does not say they are included. TECKNET has no PP3. Charge it by USB-C first. Reviewers often needed about two hours, not the one hour on the bullet. Put a spare 9V in the same pocket as a PP3 wedge.

Where it sits

Stand on the side the door opens into. Thin end towards the door, rubber on the floor. You are parking a wedge where a push from outside drives the door onto the plate. An outward door never makes that contact. KERUI asks for at least 8–10 mm. Under that, carpet can let the door shove the wedge along. Jognee states 10–25 mm. A Lomuna reviewer needed about 20 mm. TECKNET states no millimetre gap, so you only learn the fit by this test. Your foot should kick the wedge clear in the dark. Hotel packing is on the hotel door stop alarm page.

One test, then lower the sensitivity

Test once, with the door, on the floor, before you sleep. Stand back from the speaker. The Health and Safety Executive's workplace peak action of 135 dB(C) is not a certificate for a 120 dB or 130 dB bullet. Start on the lowest sensitivity. If the siren starts the moment you arm it, the plate is already loaded. Switch off, ease the wedge back, and try again. If a push slides the wedge and you get silence, the floor or the gap has failed. A higher setting will not create grip.

When to stop using it

Stop if the battery bay is hot, if the siren will not silence, or if you cannot pull the wedge clear. A fault on arrival gives 30 days to reject goods that are not of satisfactory quality under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Do not wedge a fire door open. Practise the kick-aside once while the light is on. Which listing is worth packing, if the test passed, is on the best door stop alarm page.

Common questions

Which way under the door does the wedge go?
On the inside of a door that opens inwards, thin end towards the door, so a push from outside drives the door onto the plate. The rubber face goes on the floor. You are not holding the door ajar. If the door opens outwards, the wedge never takes that push. Leave it where your foot can reach it in the dark.
Should I test it before I go to sleep?
Yes, once, with the door, on the floor you will use. A hand tap is not the same test. One TECKNET review sounded when tapped and stayed quiet on real doors. Stand back from the speaker. If you only discover a missing 9V or a 6 mm gap after the light is out, you have no alarm for that night.
How do I stop the noise?
Switch the unit off and pull the wedge out so the plate is free. On a typical 9V wedge the siren is meant to stop when the door no longer presses it or the switch is off. If it keeps screaming, remove the cell. Do not cover it with a pillow next to your head. TECKNET's low-battery pattern is three beeps and three flashes, which is a warning, not the full siren.
What if it screams as soon as I arm it?
The plate is already loaded, or the sensitivity is high. Switch off, ease the wedge back, and start on the lowest setting. Mengshen reviews include units that sounded as soon as they were armed, and high settings that tripped on a rattle. If it still screams with the door open and the wedge sitting free, treat it as a fault.
What sensitivity should I start on?
The lowest. KERUI, Mengshen, and Lomuna offer three levels. Miangerrn's review describes two volume levels. TECKNET uses a roller. Jognee's listing does not describe a sensitivity switch. High is for a door that did not trigger on low, after you have checked the gap. It is a bad default on a loose frame.
What if the battery compartment is hot?
Stop. Switch off, remove the cell, and do not put the wedge back under the door. The KERUI single has a review of heat and a burning smell as soon as the 9V was fitted. If it arrived that way, you have 30 days to reject it under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. A warm bay is not normal running for these stops.
