uPVC security door handle: 92 mm is only half the fit

Updated: October 2026

The chrome lever looks like the one on your uPVC front door, and the screw holes sit away from where the new plate wants them. A uPVC security door handle has to match two measurements, plus the way you already lock. 92 mm PZ is usual on modern plastic doors. It is not a guarantee, and it says nothing about whether the screws are near 122 mm or near 215 mm. The wider checklist is the [buying guide](/hub/door-and-window-security/security-door-handle/sub/security-door-handle-buying-guide). Prices are on the [security door handle comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/security-door-handle). Peter F. used amazon.co.uk listings and UK measuring notes in October 2026. The two measurements on a uPVC door

PZ is the distance from the centre of the spindle to the centre of the keyhole. On a modern uPVC multipoint lock it is often 92 mm. Home Secure Shop said about 82 per cent of the uPVC handles it sold were 92 mm PZ. That is one retailer’s mix, not a claim that 82 per cent of UK doors are 92 mm. If your lock is a different centre, every handle in this set will miss the keyhole. Screw centres are the holes the plates bolt through. On the same shop’s sales, roughly four in ten were 122 mm and about one in three were 210–215 mm. A handle can be correct at 92 mm and still miss every screw. Write both numbers on the old handle before you throw it away. Drilling new holes in the uPVC face is the failure. Security wording does not move the holes.

215 mm, 122 mm, or adjustable

The Yale MK3, the top pick at about £30.43, is the fixed 215 mm pattern. Yale’s page states 92 mm PZ, 215 mm centres, a cylinder guard and a backplate of 245 × 32 × 14 mm. It is 4.4 from 111 reviews. It suits a door already drilled to that long pitch. It does not suit 122 mm holes. A retailer title that adds PAS 24 is not adopted. The manufacturer page does not say PAS 24, and that mark tests a whole doorset. The UAP Signature, at about £25.99, puts 219 mm, 92 mm PZ and 122 mm centres in the title. The bullets also say 243 mm and 210 mm, and only three reviews support it, at 3.2. The Yale adjustable set, the best value at the same about £30.43, keeps 92 mm and slides the screws. One review used it at 204 mm. Yale calls it standard security. Who should skip each set is on the best security door handle page.

How the door locks

If you lift the lever to throw the hooks, then turn the key, you need a lever on the outside as well as the inside. A lever-pad set puts a fixed pull outside. That pull will not lift. If the outside is already a fixed pad and you enter with the key, a second lever is the mismatch the other way. Stand outside once and copy what your hand does. Lever-lever if you lift. Lever-pad if you use a key and a pull. Neither Yale set becomes a pad because the screws happen to line up.

Thickness and what still will not fit

Many PVCu doors sit around 60–70 mm through the leaf. ERA treats a screw pack of about 70 mm as the usual one for that band, and a pack of about 44 mm as the usual one for timber or composite. One review of the adjustable Yale rejected a door over 70 mm. An old Wickes pattern did not line up, and another buyer returned the set because the backplate was too big. None of the three sets includes a euro cylinder, and none prints a TS 007 star. Fitting, once the numbers match, is how to fit a security door handle. Why a security adjective is not a star is on the 2 star handle or 3 star cylinder page.

Common questions

Are all uPVC handles 92 mm?
No. 92 mm is the common PZ on modern uPVC locks, and one UK shop said about 82 per cent of its own online uPVC handles were that size. If yours is not 92 mm, the MK3, the adjustable Yale and the UAP title in this set are the wrong centre.
What screw centres does a Yale MK3 use?
The MK3 in this set, and Yale’s own chrome page for it, use 215 mm fixing centres with a 92 mm PZ. The backplate on that page is 245 × 32 × 14 mm. It will not land on 122 mm holes. The listing does not print a TS 007 star.
When do I need 122 mm?
You need 122 mm when that is the distance between the screw holes on the door. The UAP Signature title claims 122 mm and a 219 mm backplate. Its bullets also mention 210 mm and 243 mm, so confirm the door rather than the longer bullet.
Can one handle fit every old uPVC door?
No. The adjustable Yale slides its screws and has been used at 204 mm, and it still missed an old Wickes pattern and a door over 70 mm. Fixed 215 mm and fixed 122 mm sets miss each other completely.
Lever or pad on a uPVC front door?
Use a lever outside if you lift the handle to throw the multipoint hooks. Use a pad outside if the outside is already a fixed pull and the key does the locking. A pad will not lift a handle-operated lock.
How thick is a typical uPVC door for these sets?
ERA’s usual PVCu screw pack is about 70 mm, for doors around 60–70 mm thick. A review of the adjustable Yale said a door over 70 mm did not suit the set. A UAP family page quotes 40–80 mm for composite and timber. That range is not a fire rating for this ASIN.
