How to fit a security door handle with the door held open

Updated: October 2026

You have a matching set and a Pozidriv driver. How to fit a security door handle is about which plate faces the street, which way the spindle sits, and whether the key works before you close the leaf. The job goes wrong when the blank plate ends up inside, the springs fight, or a guard is forced over a barrel that sticks out. Prices and the three listings are on the [security door handle comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/security-door-handle). Peter F. followed ERA's external-handle guide and the Master Locksmiths Association's projection note in October 2026. There is no lab test. Before the screwdriver

Leave the door open, and blocked open, until the key works from the outside. Checkatrade uses that rule for a uPVC cylinder change, and it applies to the handle as well. A door that closes on you with the plates half on becomes a locksmith call. Keep the old handle, screws and spring cassettes. One MK3 reviewer refitted the old cassette when the new one squeaked. ERA's guide is the spine: the outside plate has no screw holes, the lever is set before the spindle goes fully home, and the screws stay finger-tight until the spring is tested. A hacksaw is for a screw that is too long, not for a new hole pattern. If the holes do not meet, you have the wrong handle. Drilling the uPVC face to force a fit is the failure, not the method. If you have not measured, use the uPVC security door handle page first. A pitch mismatch should have been caught in the security door handle buying guide. Reviewers time a straight swap, not every door. Adjustable Yale reviews describe about 10 to 20 minutes with a Pozidriv driver. MK3 reviewers who already had 215 mm holes describe about 10 minutes. Those reports are not a timer if the cylinder is proud or the hooks feel wrong.

Outside plate and spindle

The plate with no screw holes goes outside. The screws come through from the inside, which is also how the Master Locksmiths Association wants security furniture bolted: from the inside, so the street side does not offer a head to turn. ERA marks the external side on its own cylinder sheet in the same spirit. If you reverse the plates, the screw heads sit outside and the blank face is wasted on the hall. ERA's spindle rule is concrete. Set the lever at 90 degrees, towards the hinges, before you push the spindle in. That orientation is what lets the spring cassette return the handle to horizontal instead of leaving it drooping or binding. Try the lever with the screws only finger-tight. It should fall back level. If it binds, the cassette is the wrong way up or the spindle is one flat out. Undo it now. Tight screws will not teach a spring which way to turn. Keep the old cassettes until that return is clean. A squeaky new MK3 spring was cured in one review by refitting the old cassette, not by forcing the screws. Wipe metal shavings out of the spindle hole before you decide the spring is at fault. Bring the screws up only after the lever returns, and leave enough play to test the key.

Screws and thickness

Bring the screws up evenly, a little at a time, so one side does not cock the plate. If a screw bottoms out before the plates meet, it is too long and ERA's guide allows you to shorten it with a hacksaw. One MK3 review cut screws on a door around 44 mm, ERA's usual timber or composite pack. uPVC around 60–70 mm usually wants the 70 mm pack. A screw that is too short will not pull the halves together, which is a repeated MK3 complaint. You only see that once both plates are on the door. Finger-tight, then the spring test, then snug. Driving the screws home first hides a cassette that is fighting the lever. If the plates rock, the screw may be in the wrong hole of an adjustable set. Sliding those screws to a guessed centre, rather than the old holes, is how that Yale gets called universal and then fails. An old Wickes pattern in the reviews did not fit. Stop and re-measure rather than ovalising the plastic. The pack is not a lock. The MK3 bullets name spring cassettes, screws and a spindle. A euro cylinder is not in the box, so the next section decides whether the old barrel is fit to reuse.

The cylinder must not stand proud

A security handle with a guard needs the cylinder close to the door face. The Master Locksmiths Association's January 2025 note says the outside cylinder should not protrude more than 3 mm beyond the door face or the furniture. ERA's Fortress cylinder sheet uses the same 3 mm maximum so the cylinder sits against the handle. Those two sources agree on 3 mm. One MK3 review is a separate complaint: the lock cannot protrude even by 5 mm before that guard objects. If the barrel is past 3 mm, you are outside the association's guidance. Reviewers who still could not seat the guard ground the opening or gave up. Grinding is a modification, and a cylinder of the right length is the proper fix. Leave the cylinder in if it already sits flush and the key turns. Take it out, or have it taken out, if the guard will not pass over it. With the door still open, try the key from both sides, then lift the handle and watch the hooks. They should move as they did before. Only then close the door. A new handle does not include a cylinder. Call a locksmith if the hooks do not move, if the cylinder is snapped, if a certified door's maker forbids the swap, or if this is the only exit and you cannot keep it safely open. Do not drill a uPVC face so a 215 mm set meets 122 mm holes. That is a different handle.

Common questions

Which plate goes outside?
The plate with no screw holes goes outside. Screws pass through from the inside, which matches the Master Locksmiths Association's bolt-through advice and ERA's external-handle guide. If the screw heads would face the street, the plates are reversed. Undo them before you close the door. The blank outside face is part of the point of a security backplate.
Which way does the spindle go?
ERA's guide sets the lever at 90 degrees, towards the hinges, before the spindle is pushed home. That gives the spring a chance to return the handle to level. Test it finger-tight. If the lever droops or binds, the cassette or the spindle flat is wrong. Tighten only after the return is clean. Forcing a binding lever with the final screws bends the cassette rather than fixing the direction.
Do I take the cylinder out?
Leave it in if it already sits within the 3 mm projection the MLA and ERA describe and the key turns with the door open. Take it out, or have a locksmith take it out, if a cylinder guard will not sit over it. One MK3 review treated even 5 mm of stick-out as too much for that guard. The new handle does not contain a replacement cylinder.
Can I cut the screws?
Yes, if they are too long to let the plates meet. ERA's guide uses a hacksaw for that. One MK3 review shortened screws on a door around 44 mm. Do not cut screws that are already too short to pull the halves together. A short screw is a different pack, often the 70 mm uPVC length rather than the 44 mm timber or composite length. Cutting plastic out of the door is not the same job.
How do I know the spring is right?
With the screws only finger-tight, the lever should return to horizontal when you let go. If it stops at an angle or squeaks and sticks, the cassette is wrong or, on an MK3, noisy enough that one reviewer refitted the old cassette. Wipe metal shavings out of the hole before you decide the spring is faulty. Snug the screws only after that test.
What if the guard will not sit over the cylinder?
The barrel is standing too far out for that furniture. The MLA limit is 3 mm past the face or the furniture. A separate MK3 review says the lock cannot protrude even by 5 mm. Shorten or replace the cylinder so it sits against the handle. Do not grind the guard as the normal fix. If the barrel will not unscrew, stop. These sets do not include a new cylinder.
