Extra door lock UK: choose the job before the brand

Updated: October 2026

You typed extra door lock UK and the first page mixes white arms, cabin hooks, a red brace and a sticky block for a toddler's lever. They fasten something, but they do not do the same job. A hook at about £4.99 that holds a gate open will not stand in for the lock an insurer names. This page matches the type to the door, and to whether you are home when it has to work. Prices and the twelve listings sit on the [additional door lock comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/additional-door-lock). What extra means on a UK door

An extra door lock is a second fastening, not a new euro cylinder and not a replacement multipoint. A sash jammer swings across the meeting of a door and a frame. Some jammers lock with a key. The white packs here do not. Master Locksmiths Association advice is two jammers on a single door, and a locking version only if you need it from outside. Their hardware guide starts around £12 before labour, a rule of thumb, not a quote for these listings. Lichfield District Council calls a sash jammer a low-cost extra. Shelf prices here run from about £4.99 to about £22.72.

Five jobs, five different products

Name the job before you look at stars. Extra resistance while you are in, on a hinged uPVC, timber or composite door, is a non-locking sash jammer. You twist the arm and swing it back before you leave. Two horizontal levers take a handle clamp. It needs no drill, and it only works while it sits on the handles. A room you cannot drill takes a portable brace, and only on an inward door with a gap. The DoorJammer maker says most uPVC doors have none, and you take the brace with you. A bolt on a door edge you own can stay slid shut when you are out. A cabin hook holds a gate open. A child lever lock is ranked in Baby Products, not as a night lock.

What insurers and fire rules still require

On uPVC, West Yorkshire Police still prefers a TS 007 3-star or Sold Secure Diamond cylinder, and treats a sash jammer as an addition. None of the twelve listings is that cylinder. A PAS 24 line on a portable brace is a claim about the device, not a certificate for your doorset. Cheshire Fire and Rescue expects an HMO escape door to open from the inside without a removable key. Park a jammer arm so it cannot fall across the door while you sleep. On a fire door or a flat entrance, do not add a fastening until the exit still works.

When to stop buying an accessory

Stop when the cylinder is not a known anti-snap rating, the uPVC frame is hollow and you cannot feel steel, the only way out is a fire route, or the multipoint has failed. Those are locksmith jobs. A white arm is a stopgap while you wait, and the reviews that use it that way still treat it as temporary. Swing, handles and the cylinder on uPVC, composite, French or patio doors are on the uPVC extra lock page. A brace in a bag against a screw-on jammer is on the portable or fixed page. This guide does not rank a winner.

Common questions

Is a sash jammer the same as a BS 3621 lock?
No. BS 3621 is a thief-resistant lock, keyed both sides, of the kind insurers cite for a timber final exit. BS 8621 is the thumb-turn version ProtectUK points to on flats, so you are not searching for a key on the way out. A sash jammer is an arm across the sash. The white packs here have no key. Lichfield District Council and West Yorkshire Police both describe jammers as a cheap extra beside the main lock. Fitting one does not turn the door into a BS 3621 door.
Will a hook and eye count as an extra security lock?
Not in the sense a front door needs. The hooks in this set are cabin hooks. UK reviews use them to hold shed doors, gates and French doors open, and one dog still pushed a gate after a hook slipped. A hook only works if you leave it in the eye. It is a fair buy for a gate. It is the wrong object if the job is night-time security.
Do I need a key if I am only at home at night?
If you are in, and you can reach the fastening, a non-locking jammer or a handle clamp can be enough as a second layer. You set it when you are in and you clear it before you need to leave. If you also leave the house, that layer does nothing unless it stays locked without you. A keyed jammer, operated from outside, is a locksmith product this shelf does not contain.
Can a child lever lock replace a door lock?
No. The adhesive lever lock in this set is sold to stop a toddler pushing a handle down. Reviews include a pad pulled off on day one, and residue when you peel it off. It is ranked in Baby Products. It does not secure an empty house, and it does not meet a lock standard. Use it for the child, and keep the real lock for the door.
What should I buy if I cannot drill?
You need a door that opens inward, a flat floor, and a gap of at least 3 mm with no seal in the way. That is the portable brace, and the maker says most uPVC doors fail the gap. A handle clamp is the other no-drill option, and only if you have two horizontal levers. A hook still needs screws. If neither shape matches, do not force a screw into a frame you do not own.
Does any of this satisfy my insurance schedule?
Nothing on this shelf can be read as meeting a named policy. The AA describes BS 3621 or a multipoint as the usual contents minimum. Some locksmiths say a jammer alone will cause a claim to fail. That is their warning, not your schedule. Read the schedule, or ask the insurer, before you treat an accessory as the lock.
