Bathroom door lock: privacy without locking someone in

Updated: October 2026

You want the bathroom or WC door shut, and you need to know whether a bolt from the [room door lock comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/room-door-lock) is acceptable. The usual UK pattern is a latch, plus a privacy bolt with a thumbturn inside and an emergency release outside. Every slide bolt in this set, and the QWORK rotate bolt, is inside only. None of those listings includes a coin slot. If anyone who cannot free themselves might fasten the door, do not rely on that hardware. Peter F. compared the amazon.co.uk listings in October 2026 and did not lab-test them. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The bathroom pattern

On a door with backplate handles, T.H. Wiggans fits a mortice bathroom lock: the handle works the latch, and a thumbturn works a separate privacy bolt. With rose handles, the same guides use a tubular deadbolt. MacBlair describes the outside piece as an emergency release and says the lock is not for an external door. Suffolk Latch Company sells the turn-and-release as a thumbturn on the bathroom side and a slot on the landing. You open it with a coin or a screwdriver. BS 8621 is the entrance standard for a key outside and a thumbturn inside. It is not a certificate for a bathroom bolt, and none of these listings claims it. A Union 2226 is the sort of case those guides mean. It is not in this ASIN list. Backset and case depth are on the internal door lock buying guide.

What the slide bolts in this comparison actually are

Jelken, lmytdo, YUOIP and All-Pie slide. QWORK turns. All five screw to the face of the door and leave the landing with nothing to operate. QWORK, the top pick at about £5.95, has 4.6 from 1,833 reviews. Reviewers use the turn as a bathroom snib. One review says a boot would still open it. That is forcing the door, not using a slot the maker provided. Jelken, the best value at about £3.79, has a review of a bolt that stuck and locked the writer in. YUOIP draws comments from adults who use it to keep children out while they are inside. That is privacy for the adult who can still slide the bolt. A rotate bolt is not safer than a slide bolt for someone locked in. A child who is already inside can still fasten a bolt their hand can reach. The stick-on lever lock is a different control, on the child proof door handle lock page, and it does not open a bolt from the landing.

Keyed handles are a different risk

A key on the outside of a lever feels like an emergency release. It is not. BaBahuanhuan, Faankiton and Movstriker are keyed tubular levers. A coin release does not need the household key. A keyed handle needs the key, and the mechanism has to work. Faankiton, at about £16.99, claims a turn inside. A review of a 40 mm door said the inside thread was too short. Movstriker, at about £13.99, includes a jam that left people locked in until the lock was broken. The key also does not reach a QWORK or Jelken bolt screwed above the handle. If you need to enter in a hurry, the fastening has to be openable from the landing without breaking it.

When to leave it to a joiner

Leave it if the bathroom door might be a fire door. GOV.UK says the door must close fully into the frame. A bolt that stops the door meeting the stop is the wrong ironmongery. The XFORT fire sentence is not a certificate, and that sashlock is a 3-lever key lock rather than a bathroom thumbturn. Leave it if the door has dropped. If the privacy bolt misses the keep, check that the door still hangs square before you recut the frame. The screw sequence for a plain internal door is on how to fit a bathroom door lock. Leave it, and call someone, if a person is already locked in. An inside-only bolt has nothing on your side.

Common questions

What lock should a UK bathroom door have?
A latch to hold the door shut, and a privacy bolt with a thumbturn inside and an emergency release outside. T.H. Wiggans and MacBlair both describe that pattern. A slide bolt is the option they treat as the one to avoid when someone else may need to enter.
Can I open a slide bolt from the landing?
Not with the bolts in this comparison. Jelken, lmytdo, YUOIP, All-Pie and the QWORK rotate bolt do not list an outside release. If the bolt is across, the person inside has to move it. Do not assume a coin slot on the QWORK listing.
Is a rotate bolt any safer than a slide bolt if someone is locked in?
No. The QWORK turn is easier for the person inside than a sticky slide, which is why reviewers use it as a snib. The landing side is still blank. A review that says a boot would open it describes forcing the door, not a designed release.
What is an emergency release?
It is the slot on the outside of a bathroom privacy bolt, so you can undo it with a coin or a screwdriver if the person inside cannot. Suffolk Latch Company sells that turn-and-release as a piece separate from the latch. It is not a feature of these slide bolts.
Will a keyed handle let me in if a child bolts the bathroom?
Only if they fastened that keyed latch, and the key and spindle both work. It will not open a separate slide bolt. Faankiton and Movstriker reviews include jams that left people locked in, so a key outside is not a reliable rescue.
What if the bathroom door is also a fire door?
Stop and check the doorset before you fit a bolt or cut a mortice. The door has to close fully, and a modification can undermine the fire evidence. None of the bolts here has that evidence, and the XFORT wording is not a certificate.
