Door hinge buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are replacing a dropped bedroom door, or a cupboard that no longer sits, and a door hinge buying guide on amazon.co.uk mixes butts, flush hinges and 35 mm cups. Those are not substitutes. Name the job, then the size, then the finish, and only then the stars. Shelf prices are on the [door hinges comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/door-hinges). If the leaf is FD30 or FD60, use [fire door hinges](/hub/door-and-window-security/door-hinges/sub/door-hinges-fire-doors), because none of these packs print BS EN 1935. Which hinge family you are buying

The first split is the door, not the finish. A butt is two leaves and a pin, morticed into a timber door and the frame. The XFORT packs are that family. A small flush butt is different: LLRY and Cretty-Meet belong with cupboards, boxes and gates. A concealed hinge is a third object. Furniware is a 110 degree full overlay. AOLISHENG is 135 degrees for a blind corner. A rising butt is refused on fire doors, and a loose pin is wrong on an outward-opening external door.

Size and stated load

The 3 inch XFORT pack states 40 kg and the 4 inch XFORT packs state 80 kg. The MSC 4 inch listing also states 40 kg, and reviews say those hinges feel lighter than the heavy-duty title. If no weight is printed, do not invent one. GBACHOOSE, LLRY and Cretty-Meet leave the load blank. AOLISHENG states 20 pounds, about 9 kg. None of these listings print a BS EN 1935 code. Grade 13, on a hinge bought elsewhere, means a 120 kg test door at 200,000 cycles.

Finish, screws, and pack count

Polished brass and polished chrome on steel are indoor finishes here. The XFORT listings say internal wooden doors. One review of the 4 inch chrome pack reports rust after the hinges got wet. Outside, you want a stainless grade the bullets name. Only the Cretty-Meet pair states 304. A review of the 3 inch pack describes screws of about 25 mm, short of the 30 mm No. 8 length used on timber fire doors. The LLRY pack includes none. Cretty-Meet says 2 sets and packs two hinges. Bearings are a separate choice, on the ball bearing or plain butt page.

What to measure before you order

Measure the hinge you are taking off. A 3 inch pattern will not land in a 4 inch recess. The Leshmido title says 4 inch and the specification says 100 by 79 cm on a 90 g pack. Those cannot both be the leaf. The LLRY title says 75 by 50 mm, and a review says the listing also prints 58 mm and 3.4 inches. For a cupboard, measure the cup. Listings here that state one use 35 mm, bored 11.5 mm deep. Furniware suits a door 14 to 22 mm thick and says there is no soft close. GHLIANGZHOU claims 90 degrees and states no cup diameter. Then match a pack on the best door hinges page.

Which pack follows from the measurements

If the holes are 3 inch and 40 kg is enough, the top pick is the XFORT 3 inch chrome three-pack at about £9.99. If the leaf is heavier and the finish stays indoors, the best value is the XFORT 4 inch brass three-pack at about £12.99. A frameless cupboard wants a 35 mm cup, not a butt. An FD30 or FD60 leaf is outside this set.

Common questions

Do I need a 3 inch or a 4 inch hinge?
Many 35 mm internal doors are hung on a 3 inch leaf, and many 44 mm or heavier doors on a 4 inch leaf, but the stated weight still decides. Here the 3 inch XFORT pack states 40 kg and the 4 inch XFORT packs state 80 kg. A 4 inch MSC pack also states 40 kg, so the inch size alone is not the load. Match the old hole pattern, or you will be filling and redrilling.
Is a 35 mm hinge the same as a 3 inch hinge?
No. A 3 inch hinge is about 76 mm along the leaf of a butt for a room door. A 35 mm figure on a cabinet hinge is the diameter of the cup bored into the back of the door. They do not fit the same hole, and they do not carry the same door. If the listing says 35 mm and 110 or 135 degrees, you are buying a cupboard hinge.
How many hinges should I buy for one door?
A domestic room door is often hung on three hinges, and a three-pack is one door. A pair is two hinges, which is one cupboard door if each is a cup hinge, or a very light leaf if they are butts. The MSC title says two hinges and the unit count says one, so check the carton. A fire door's hinge count comes from its evidence, not from this habit.
Are the screws in a cheap pack long enough?
Often they are not. One XFORT review describes screws of about 25 mm, and Cretty-Meet reviews describe heads that stand proud. Timber fire-door practice wants at least a No. 8 screw at 30 mm, which is also a sensible length on a heavy ordinary door. The LLRY pack includes no screws. If the supplied screw does not bite sound timber, use a longer one of the same gauge.
What if the listing does not state a weight?
Treat the load as unknown. Do not borrow 40 kg or 80 kg from a different ASIN, and do not treat heavy duty as a figure. Small butts in this set, and the GBACHOOSE ten-pack, leave the kilogram line blank. A cupboard hinge that states 20 pounds is telling you it is for a cabinet door of about 9 kg.
