Multi spindle window handle or one bar you may cut

Updated: October 2026

You have an inline espag, and one amazon.co.uk box says multi-spindle while the next prints 40 mm or 43 mm. A multi spindle window handle is a kit you swap. A fixed handle is one bar, often sawn to length in this set. The Products Compared editorial team used twelve amazon.co.uk listings from 15 October 2026, plus ERA, Home Secure and Toolstation pages where they disagree. There was no lab test. The full set is the [window handle comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/window-handle). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two different purchases

A swappable spindle is a bar you replace from the same pack. A fixed spindle is one bar. Too long, and reviewers cut it. Too short, and it misses the gearbox, and cutting cannot help. Universal does not cover a cockspur, tilt-and-turn, a cranked handle or an 8 mm timber spindle. No listing here includes a reducing sleeve. A 40 mm spindle is the metal. A 43 mm centre is the gap between the screws. Centres and the lock stay on how to measure a uPVC window handle.

Five spindles stated

ERA is about £6.81, with five spindles, a key and 43 mm centres, for uPVC and timber. Lengths are not numbered. Do not paste ERA's shop list of 9, 15, 30, 43 and 55 mm onto this ASIN. The unit count says 3 against one handle. Shield is about £6.99, with five spindles and five screw sets, so those screws should not need cutting. Lengths and centres are not stated. If you have not measured, these two state a count of five. Home Secure is about £7.99, 4.5 from 2,213 ratings, and the lengths are still not printed on the Amazon page.

One bar you may have to cut

Yale YWHLCK40N-WH is about £6.56. The bullet says 40 mm and adjustable. Reviews say the bar is fixed and is sawn. That means cut to length, not a telescopic bar. Toolstation says the centres are 43 mm. Amazon's field says 40 mm. Do not pick one figure. WODSTA states 43 mm for the spindle and the centres, at about £9.99 for two, and reviewers still cut the bar. mwellewm states 43 mm at 7×7 mm, at about £9.69, with no centres. The ten-pack puts 40 mm only in the title, at about £24.80. Cutting a bar you cannot hold is a mistake, and this page does not describe a grinder. When to stop a cut during fitting is on how to replace a uPVC window handle.

Which to order

If you have not measured, order five stated spindles: ERA when you want 43 mm centres on the page, or Shield when you want a screw set for each spindle. Do not treat a shop length list as printed on those Amazon titles. If you have measured, order the stated length and expect to shorten a bar that is too long. WODSTA states 43 mm for both the spindle and the centres. A 40 mm spindle is not 43 mm centres. Bulivora, at about £5.99 with no length, does not answer this page. Who each listing suits overall is on the best locking window handle page.

Common questions

Should I buy a multi-spindle window handle or a fixed length?
Buy stated swappable spindles when you have not measured the bar. In this set that means ERA or Shield, both of which state five spindles, at about £6.81 and about £6.99 on 15 October 2026. Buy one stated length when you have measured, and expect to cut a fixed bar that is too long. A title that only says multi-spindle, without a count, is not five stated spindles.
What does multi-spindle mean if the lengths are not listed?
It means the listing claims more than one bar and does not tell you the millimetres. Home Secure, Fizzix, Blunesta and Lyntrioris are in that group. Home Secure's shop page lists 9, 15, 30, 45 and 55 mm for a universal handle. Those numbers are not on amazon.co.uk for that ASIN. Do not merge the shop list into the order.
Can I cut a 40 mm or 43 mm spindle?
Reviewers cut the Yale 40 mm bar and the mwellewm 43 mm stem because those bars are fixed, and Toolstation says the Yale spindle can be cut down. Shorten from the end only if the bar is too long and you can hold it. A bar that is too short will not reach the gearbox, and cutting makes that worse. Do not cut a piece you cannot hold.
Is a 40 mm spindle the same as 43 mm screw centres?
The spindle is the square bar. The centres are the gap between the two fixing screws. WODSTA states both as 43 mm. Yale's bullet states a 40 mm spindle, Amazon's centre field on that ASIN says 40 mm, and Toolstation says 43 mm centres for the same model number. Measure your own holes before you treat 40 and 43 as one size.
What if the bar is too short to reach the gearbox?
The handle may turn and the cams will not move, because the spindle never reaches the lock. You need a longer bar from a kit, or a different handle, not a cut. ERA and Shield state five spindles for that unknown or too-short case. A fixed 40 mm or 43 mm bar that is already shorter than the old one will not grow in the sash.
