Combination padlock for a shed

Updated: October 2026

You want one code on the garden gate, or on a shed that holds hand tools, because keys keep vanishing into coat pockets. A combination padlock for a shed can do that job only as a shared-access deterrent, and only after the hasp is bolted and you have accepted an open shackle with no printed grade. The ten locks in the [combination lock comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/combination-lock) were read from amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026 by Peter F. None states BS EN 12320 or Sold Secure. A gate code is not a shed rating

The honest job is a family code on a gate that keeps the dog in, or on a shed of hand tools, where a forced door is annoying rather than serious. You are solving lost keys. You are not buying a rating. Lichfield District Council asks for a closed-shackle padlock, or a Sold Secure or similar rated lock, and says a bike should not rely on the shed door alone. Kelvedon Parish Council wants the hasp coach-bolted. ProtectUK points padlocks at BS EN 12320 and concealed shackles. A grade still has to be printed, and these listings do not print one. If the shed holds a bike or tools that would open the house, read combination padlock vs keyed padlock.

None of these ten is a closed shackle

Every lock in this set is an open shackle, so the bar stands clear of the body. Council sheets ask for the closed shape on a shed. A closed-shackle Squire exists in UK trade and is not one of these ten ASINs. The Squire CP40 at about £13 refuses the job in plain words: lockers, bags, and cabinets, not gates, sheds, or continuous outdoor use. The NovLock NLCL003 at about £14.99 states an 8 mm shackle and aims at gates and sheds. The Squire CP50/2.5 at about £22.99 states a 2.5 inch shackle for wide hasps and says it is not high security. The XShield at about £3.77 is best value when a stated 6.2 mm bar fits, which in this comparison is a locker until you have measured the hole. Checking the hole is the combination padlock buying guide.

Rain is the failure mode in the reviews

British weather shows up as rust, stuck wheels, and buttons that stop, and the samples disagree. On the NLCL003, the first 50 UK reviews include gates and a bin store, with no repeated seized-shut cluster. That is the kindest outdoor sample here. It is still buyers, not a salt-spray certificate. The 180-hour figure stays the seller's. GRIFEMA reviews say the numbers stick unless you lubricate them. The CP50/2.5 sample includes a seized button and a beach hut where the coating wore in about two months. The listing already excludes coastal sites. A weatherproof title is the wrong line to buy on.

Fix the hasp or do not bother

A sound lock on a hasp screwed into soft timber is a hasp problem. Kelvedon's sheet wants coach bolts through the door and the frame, nuts on the inside. If the door is thin ply or the frame is rotten, the padlock is theatre. The NLCL003 is the listing whose review sample is kinder on rust, if the hole takes 8 mm and you can see the wheels in daylight. The CP50/2.5 is the reach option on a sheltered inland site. Stop when the shed is remote, the contents are a bike, or you need a closed shackle. The locker comparison is the best combination padlock page.

Common questions

Can I put a combination padlock on a garden gate?
Yes, if the gate is low risk, the hasp is bolted, and you accept an open shackle with no printed grade. In this set the NovLock NLCL003 is the listing aimed at that job whose first 50 UK reviews do not show a repeated seizure cluster. The Squire CP50/2.5 fits when you need 2.5 inch of reach and the seller's limits on value and coastal weather are acceptable. The CP40's listing tells you to leave it off the gate.
Do I need a closed shackle on a shed?
Council sheets from Lichfield and Kelvedon ask for a closed shackle, or a Sold Secure-style rated lock, with the hasp coach-bolted. Every lock in this amazon.co.uk set is open, so the bar stays exposed. A closed-shackle combination lock is on sale elsewhere in the UK, including Squire models that are not these ASINs. If the council line is the standard you want, this set does not meet it.
Which listing tells me not to use it on a shed?
The Squire CP40. The text points it at lockers, bags, and cabinets, and it sets gates, sheds, wide hasps, and continuous outdoor exposure aside. It is about £13 and 3.9 from 230 reviews, and outdoor jams in the file arrived within days or about two weeks. The larger CP50/2.5 will name a shed, then says it is not high security and not for harsh or coastal weather.
What about the hasp screws?
Coach-bolt the hasp through the door and the frame, with the nuts on the inside, as the parish shed sheet describes. Short screws into soft timber pull out, and the padlock never gets a chance to matter. If the door is a house door, or you are unsure the frame will take bolts, ask a carpenter. A combination lock does not repair a weak door.
Is this enough for a mower or a bike?
No. Lichfield's sheet says a bike should not depend on the shed door lock alone, and it points tools that could open the house at proper securing. An open, ungraded combination padlock is a deterrent for hand tools you can stand to lose. A mower or a bike belongs with a keyed lock that carries a grade you can name, or with the bike locked in its own right. The versus page is where that choice is set out.
