ABUS door bolt for a uPVC door

Updated: October 2026

The multi-point handle on a uPVC back door is stiff, or the patio door feels thin once it is dark. An ABUS door bolt for a uPVC door is, at most, an extra slide on the inside while you are in. It is not the lock you leave on, and a screw in the wrong place can wreck the door. Timber pilot holes are on the [how to fit an ABUS door bolt](/hub/door-and-window-security/abus-door-bolt/sub/abus-door-bolt-how-to-fit) page. Prices are on the [ABUS door bolt comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/abus-door-bolt). Peter F. used police and locksmith guidance, updated 19 October 2026, and did not drill a uPVC door. What the bolt adds

People add a surface bolt because the handle is awkward or a French door feels thin after dark. In the SR30's UK notes, one use is a uPVC handle that is hard to push down. A UK review also ties that to rheumatoid arthritis. It is still an extra while you are at home. The bolt does not repair a failing gearbox. The listing that names this door is the white SR30, at about £20.13, with spacer plates and a cover. ABUS puts it on the handle side of French doors, at level 3 on its own scale, not PAS 24 and not VdS-approved. The 40 mm SR40 and the 60 mm nickel bolt do not name uPVC. Screwing the brass bolt into plastic because it is cheap is the expensive mistake. Screws in PVC have a reputation for working loose. If you want the SR30, you are accepting holes.

Leave the multi-point lock in charge

When you leave, police.uk says lift the handle, lock, and remove the key. A bolt you can only slide from the inside does not do that job. If the cylinder is the weak part, the upgrade is a TS007 three-star cylinder, or Sold Secure SS312. Hinge bolts, not a face-fixed slide, are the outward-opening extra. Keep using the multi-point on the nights you also slide the bolt. A handle left up, with only the ABUS bolt across, is screws in plastic. If you have stopped lifting a stiff handle, the bolt is hiding a gearbox fault. The best ABUS door bolt page still names the SR30 as the covered extra while you are in. The SR30 has no outside release. Do not fit it on the only way out, or on an HMO exit that must open without a knob on the inside only.

Patio doors and French doors

ABUS and the listing both mention a patio or French door. West Yorkshire Police talks about proper locks and hinge bolts on the hinge edge. A slide at handle height is one extra, not that set. If the doors open outwards, a bolt on the handle stile does not hold the hinges. SR30 plates help only a small depth step. They do not bridge a proud frame or bite hollow plastic. Many patio frames sit proud of the sash. A straight 40 mm bolt will not shoot into that offset, and that listing has no plates. The 60 mm nickel bolt is the same shape, and a rust note from an uninsulated room is a poor omen for a cold conservatory. Flush faces on timber are on the buying guide.

When to stop drilling

Stop before the drill touches the door if you cannot see the steel reinforcement or the multi-point strip. A screw that meets them can bind the lock or crack the plastic. This page will not give a drilling pattern copied from timber. If the only solid bite is the reinforcement, a locksmith should decide. The same stop applies if extra holes would void a warranty. Ask the installer before you mark the face. On uPVC, those holes are the risk, not a step you finish by habit.

Common questions

Can I screw an ABUS bolt to a uPVC door?
You can only if the screws bite something solid that is not the lock strip, and if you accept that screws in PVC have a reputation for working loose. The SR30 is the listing that names patio, balcony and windows. That sentence is not a fitting diagram and not a PAS 24 result. If you cannot see the reinforcement, stop and ask a locksmith.
Will a slide bolt replace the multi-point lock?
No. When you leave, you still lift the handle, lock, and remove the key. The bolt is an inside extra for while you are at home. A TS007 three-star cylinder is the usual upgrade if the cylinder is the weak part. ABUS level 3 does not stand in for that.
What about a patio or French door?
ABUS describes the SR30 for the handle side of French doors, and the amazon.co.uk bullets name patio and balcony doors. Hinge bolts, on an outward-opening door, are a separate fixing on the hinge edge. A straight bolt still needs nearly flush faces. A proud frame is the wrong shape for the SR40 and for an unspaced SR30.
Is the SR30 meant for this?
It is the only one of the three whose listing and maker page mention this sort of door. UK reviewers include people who wanted an extra because the handle was hard to push down. It remains keyless, inside-operated, and outside BS 3621 and TS007. The stiff cover and the sometimes long screws are the fitting complaints to expect.
When should a locksmith take over?
Before you drill, if the steel, the multi-point strip, or the warranty is in doubt. Also if the insurer has named a cylinder or a timber-door standard, if the frame is loose, or if the handle no longer throws the hooks. Fitting a surface bolt on top of a dead gearbox leaves you with both problems.
