Security escutcheon vs cylinder guard

Updated: October 2026

You have typed both names because a listing promised to stop drilling, and a locksmith page is talking about stars. Security escutcheon versus cylinder guard is that fork. A rose tidies the hole. A tested guard, or a tested cylinder, is what the snapping routes actually name. The ten amazon.co.uk plates, and what they cost, are on the [security escutcheon comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/security-escutcheon). Peter F. used the Door and Hardware Federation's TS 007 note, the Master Locksmiths Association, Sold Secure's domestic brochure, and the listings in this set, updated 19 October 2026. There was no attack on any cylinder. A qualifying purchase through an amazon.co.uk link can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What each one is

A security escutcheon, in UK locksmith language, is protective furniture around a euro cylinder, often fixed from the inside. When it is certified, it can be TS 007 2-star hardware or Sold Secure SS 301 Bronze hardware. On amazon.co.uk the same words mostly mean a thin key rose. The ten listings kept here, from about £5.29 to about £12.90, are that second group, plus Ultion's finger pull and one Victorian mortice flap. None shows those marks. A cylinder guard is the tested surround, or a higher-tested cylinder that does not rely on a separate plate. Lock snapping grips a vulnerable euro cylinder and breaks it at a weak point. A decorative plate can cover the hole and still leave that point reachable, especially if the cylinder stands proud. XFORT and Livawnd both carry a drilling bullet. The listings do not show a certificate. Absence of a mark is not a failed test. These plates were not shown to have been tested at all. Bolt-through furniture in the Master Locksmiths Association domestic guideline is part of a security specification. Face-fixed screws on a rose only hold a cover on. If you cannot find a star count, a Kitemark, or a Sold Secure line on the listing and on the maker's page, you are buying the rose.

The two tested routes

The Door and Hardware Federation describes TS 007 as a test against five attacks. The Carlisle Brass guide to TS 007:2014 + A2:2018 sets out the arithmetic. One star is a cylinder. Two stars are protective furniture. Three stars are a higher-tested cylinder. A 3-star cylinder is one route. A 1-star cylinder plus 2-star furniture is the other. The Master Locksmiths Association says a 1-star cylinder alone is not anti-snap. You do not add a decorative rose and call the sum three. An SS 312 Diamond cylinder stands alone. An SS 312 Gold cylinder needs SS 301 Bronze hardware, a handle or an escutcheon. PAS 24 uses those routes for doorsets. BS 3621 does not turn a key rose into a guard. Door Controls Direct listed the Eurospec AEB1750, a Kitemarked 2-star pair, at about £28.18 including VAT, for 44 mm or 55 mm doors. It is not one of the ten ASINs. Ultion's Sweet pull, about £12.90, is described as suited door furniture. The page used here does not give that pull a TS 007 star. A UK review on a composite door with an Ultion cylinder does not transfer the cylinder's test onto the plate.

What still matters after you buy the cylinder

A 3-star or Diamond cylinder still has a length. ERA's measuring sheet and the Master Locksmiths Association both cap the outside projection at 3 mm beyond the handle or the door face, with the security side outward. The 2023 joint installation guide says not to force the cylinder and not to power-drive the retaining screw. A good cylinder fitted proud is a poorer result than the certificate suggests. AXS states 10 mm projection for its own rose. That number is the plate, not a new allowance on top of the 3 mm cylinder limit. Approved Document Q is the Building Regulations security requirement for new dwellings in England, including a material change of use. It does not, by itself, order a retrofit when you are only replacing a rose. An insurer or a landlord can still name TS 007 or Sold Secure in writing.

When to buy which

If the job is snapping on a euro cylinder, buy an SS 312 Diamond cylinder or a TS 007 3-star cylinder, or buy a 1-star cylinder together with Kitemarked 2-star furniture. The condition is the job. If the job is appearance, and the cylinder is already specified, a rose from the main table can be enough. This set shows finishes, pack sizes, and review faults. It does not show a guard you can specify. Do not buy the rose first and hope a later sticker will upgrade it. How the plate goes on is on the how to fit a euro escutcheon page. Which listings say euro is on the euro profile escutcheon page.

Common questions

Is a cylinder guard the same as an escutcheon?
In locksmith use, a security escutcheon can be the guard, if it is the tested 2-star or SS 301 Bronze furniture. In the amazon.co.uk listings in this set, escutcheon means a key rose or a pull. The word on the title is not the test. Look for the star count or the Sold Secure line, on the listing and on the maker's page.
Will any metal plate stop snapping?
No. Snapping attacks the cylinder, often where it stands proud of the door. A metal ring with no certificate can hide the hole and still leave the cylinder exposed. Livawnd and XFORT say their plates help with drilling. That is a listing sentence. It is not a TS 007 result, and these listings do not show the mark.
Do I still need a guard if I fit a 3-star cylinder?
A TS 007 3-star cylinder, or an SS 312 Diamond cylinder, is the route that stands without 2-star furniture. You still fit it to the 3 mm projection limit, with the security side outward, and you still avoid forcing it. A rose after that is a finish, unless the cylinder you actually bought is the 1-star or Gold grade that needs the matching furniture.
What is the 1-star plus 2-star pairing?
One star is the cylinder and two stars are the handle or the lock surround, and together they are the alternative to a 3-star cylinder. The Master Locksmiths Association says the 1-star cylinder on its own is not anti-snap. The 2-star half has to be the tested furniture, not a rose that merely looks similar.
What is SS 312 Diamond versus Gold?
Diamond is the Sold Secure cylinder grade that stands alone in the domestic brochure. Gold is the grade that needs SS 301 Bronze hardware, such as a handle or an escutcheon, before the pairing is complete. A Gold cylinder with a decorative amazon.co.uk rose is not that pairing.
Does Part Q make me retrofit a guard?
Approved Document Q applies to new dwellings in England, including material change of use. It does not by itself require a new guard on an existing home when you are only refreshing a rose. A warranty, a landlord, or an insurer can still set a higher bar in writing. Ask them which standard they mean.
