Transparent practice lock

Updated: October 2026

You opened the clear lock in the case on the first evening, and it turned before you had learned a sequence. A transparent practice lock is a plastic body that lets you see pin stacks reach the shear line. It is a diagram. Reviewers of the kits in this amazon.co.uk group say that diagram is too easy, and a cutaway or a repinnable metal lock is a different buy. This page decides whether the lock on your desk is worth keeping. The session itself is on the [how to practise page](/hub/door-and-window-security/lock-picking-set/sub/lock-picking-set-how-to-practise). The [lock picking set comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/lock-picking-set) lists the eight sets. Peter F. used reviewer comments in these listings, plus UK shop prices for metal practice locks. There was no lab, and a clear lock meets no British Standard in these files. Updated 19 October 2026. Shelf prices for the kits are from that amazon.co.uk run. Shop prices below are labelled as shop prices. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Use the included clear lock once, to see the pins, and treat an instant open as the end of that lesson.

What the clear lock is showing you

A pin tumbler holds the plug still until each pin stack is lifted to a split, the shear line, so the plug can turn. The acrylic shell lets you watch that happen. You can see a spool or a standard pin, see the key pins and driver pins, and see which stack you actually moved. Art of Lock Picking’s mistakes article says cutaways and clear locks show the picture and then train the eye instead of the hand, and it tells readers to move on. That is that site’s opinion. It is not a test of these ASINs, and it is not a reason to throw the lock away before you have used the picture once. Across Preciva, IPSXP, Diyife, and Eventronic, reviewers say the clear locks open too easily, sometimes with any tool in the roll. The shell has done its job when you have seen one pin reach the line. It has not become a stand-in for a metal cylinder. Acrylic is not the same as a euro cylinder in a UK door, and none of these listings claims BS 3621 or Sold Secure for the practice lock.

Why it feels too easy

The pattern is repeated, and it is specific. IPSXP reviewers say the locks open with any tool. Eventronic 38-piece reviewers call the locks simplified. One Eventronic 37+5 review, on a set people returned within 24 hours, says two locks turned with no key and no picking. That is a defect in the practice lock, not a sign that you are quick. A Preciva buyer had a practice padlock open in about two minutes, and another clear lock on that ASIN shed plastic and fell apart. Diyife’s file calls the two locks the easy part of a cheap starter. Buying a second acrylic bundle does not fix that. The about £31.99 set with five clear locks was sent back for being no challenge. If your first open took almost no tension, you have finished the diagram. People still on session one, who have not yet felt a bind, should stay with one light attempt. People who have already popped the shell can stop repeating it.

Two locks or five

Diyife and the Eventronic 17-piece include two clear locks, at about £15.99. Preciva, IPSXP, the Eventronic 32-piece, and the Eventronic 38-piece include four. The Eventronic 37+5 includes five, and its piece-count field says 42 against a title about five training padlocks. The folding dkjfei set includes none. Extra clear locks in this table did not read as a difficulty ladder. Reviewers describe the same easy open on the two-lock kits and on the five-lock kit. Preciva’s bullet names four types: a slotted padlock, an AB lock, a flat cylinder, and a cross cylinder. That is a listing claim. The page does not define AB, and those names are not four graded levels confirmed by the reviews. One buyer still found the padlock trivial and the manual no help for the others. If you have not bought yet, four named plastic bodies are a reason to look at Preciva’s contents line, which the best lock pick set page weighs against the about £15.99 kits. They are not a reason to expect a training course inside the case.

The next lock, and the one to avoid

When the clear lock has shown you the shear line, the next object is metal, and it is a separate purchase. A cutaway lock is a metal practice lock with a window machined in the side so you can still see a stack, with more realistic feedback than acrylic. A repinnable lock lets you change the pin stacks so the same body is not one permanent easy combination. A progressive set is several metal locks that add pins. On KSEC, the Sparrows progressive locks are £33.95 for four metal locks with two, three, four, and five pins, in a Schlage keyway. UKBumpKeys’ practice-lock guide lists repinnable metal kits from £36.99, and describes clear acrylic as fixed and less realistic. Those are shop prices from those pages, not amazon.co.uk shelf prices, and not a test we ran. Keep the fitted door out of the lesson. Swift Locksmiths tells hobbyists not to move practice onto a live front door. Skill on a clear lock does not transfer as a promise that you can open a padlock you rely on, still less a cylinder that secures the house. If the only remaining lock in reach is the entrance, stop. A jammed practice attempt on a lock you still need is a locksmith’s job. The acrylic lock can stay in the drawer as a picture. You do not have to bin it because one opinion column said to throw visual locks out, and you do not have to keep picking it after it opens with no sequence.

Common questions

Why did the clear lock open so fast?
Reviewers of these kits say the acrylic locks are easy, and some open with any tool or with no picking at all. The plastic is there so you can see pins at the shear line. A fast open means that picture is finished. On the Eventronic 37+5, a review that two locks turned with no key describes a fault, not progress.
Are four or five clear locks harder than two?
In this group, no. Two-lock kits and the five-lock Eventronic drew the same too-easy comments. Preciva names four lock shapes in the bullet, and those names are not a reviewed difficulty ladder. Paying up to about £31.99 for a fifth acrylic body mostly adds another easy shell.
What is a cutaway lock?
A cutaway is a metal practice lock with part of the shell removed so you can see a pin stack while the rest of the lock feels closer to a real body than a fully clear acrylic padlock. It is the usual next step after one look through plastic. Shop pages price cutaways above the cheapest repinnable sets. This file does not quote one cutaway SKU as a test winner.
What is a repinnable or progressive lock?
A repinnable lock can be rebuilt with different pins so you are not stuck on one easy combination. A progressive set is a row of metal locks that add pins. KSEC lists Sparrows progressive locks at £33.95 for four locks, from two pins up to five, in a Schlage keyway. UKBumpKeys lists repinnable kits from £36.99 on its guide. Both figures are those shops’ prices.
Should I throw the acrylic lock away?
Use it once, so you have seen the shear line, and then stop treating it as practice. You can keep it as a diagram. Art of Lock Picking’s line about moving on from visual locks is an opinion, not a result from these ASINs. A cracked or fallen-apart shell, which one Preciva review describes, is already spent.
Will skill on the clear lock open a padlock I own?
These reviews do not support that leap. The clear locks are easier than the metal locks people compare them with, and some open with no sequence. A padlock you own is a fair desk object only if you can retire it. Expect to relearn tension on metal. Do not treat a two-minute acrylic open as a forecast.
Can I practise on the door after the clear lock feels done?
Leave the door. The next lock is a cutaway or a repinnable metal practice lock, bought as a practice object. The fitted front door, the only entrance, and any rented or shared door stay out of the lesson. If you are locked out, call a locksmith.
