Sliding barn door kit buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are about to order a rail for a bathroom, cloakroom or pantry door you already have. A sliding barn door kit buying guide is the order of those checks, not a finish chart. Width comes first, then the printed load, then thickness, then whether the wall can carry the rail. The eight amazon.co.uk kits on the [sliding door comparison](/hub/door-and-window-security/sliding-door) are interior top-hung hardware, priced on 19 October 2026. If the opening is a patio or a labelled fire door, read [sliding patio door security](/hub/door-and-window-security/sliding-door/sub/sliding-door-patio-security) before the basket. Peter F. read those listings and public UK fitting notes, with no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

The box is a rail, hangers and stops, and usually a floor guide. It is a way to slide a timber door you already have along the wall, so a small room keeps the floor space a hinged door would steal. Every kept listing either says the door is not included or never describes a leaf in the box. You still need that leaf, and you still need a wall that can take screws into studs or masonry. The first number is therefore your door, not the colour of the steel. Häfele’s UK barn-door guide asks for the leaf to overlap the opening by at least 50 mm on each side, so the leaf is at least 100 mm wider than the hole, and for the track to be at least twice the leaf width. Arborfield Joinery’s 2026 guide uses a tighter overlap of about 25–30 mm each side. Those are two published figures, not a regulation. When they disagree, the kit’s own maximum door width is the limit you can order against. The sums that turn an opening into a rail length are on the barn door track length page. A floor guide is a separate idea from a bottom track. Häfele says the guide stops the leaf swinging off the wall and that it carries no weight. The weight sits on the rail, so the wall still has to take screws into structure.

Width, then load, then thickness

Read the stated maximum door width before the kilogram line. A high load on a short rail still misses a normal internal leaf. In this set the caps are printed as follows. The 152 cm WOLFBIRD stops at 76 cm, with 150 kg and 30–50 mm, at about £56.99. CCJH’s 167 cm silver kit stops at 83.5 cm, with 100 kg and 35–40 mm, also at about £56.99. TSMST’s 183 cm kit stops at 92 cm, with 150 kg and 30–50 mm, at about £29.99. WINSOON’s two 92 cm rails are for a door under 92 cm, at 105 kg and 35–45 mm, for about £39.99. The black WOLFBIRD at about £28.99 allows a door up to 91.5 cm, and the about £29.99 version allows up to 100 cm. Neither of those two prints a load. Signstek’s 183 cm J-hanger prints 220 lb, which is the listing’s own figure, and it prints no door width. A blank field stays blank. The 150 kg bullet on the dearer WOLFBIRD files does not transfer to the about £28.99 or about £29.99 black kits, and Signstek’s 220 lb stays in pounds. Runners UK’s rule of thumb, which is not a test of these rails, puts hollow-core under 40 kg, solid interior timber at 40–80 kg and solid hardwood at 80–120 kg. Thickness is the third check, and only some files state it. TSMST and the 152 cm WOLFBIRD say 30–50 mm. WINSOON says 35–45 mm. CCJH says 35–40 mm. The other three files do not state a band. A 44 mm oak edge against a 35–40 mm clamp is a return, even when the width looks comfortable. Measure the edge with a tape before you sort by stars.

Wall, floor guide, and what the stars do not prove

The rail works as a beam. Häfele and The Sandwich Handyman both say plasterboard on its own is not a fixing. You need studs, a timber header taken into studs, or plugs into masonry. Several kits here supply wooden dowels as wall plugs. Reviewers on the cheaper WOLFBIRD files and on CCJH replaced those dowels in brick or on a hollow wall. That is a parts problem you can see in the reviews. It is also a reason to stop if you cannot reach structure at all. Prefer a listing that names a floor guide and anti-jump blocks. The about £28.99 and about £29.99 WOLFBIRD kits name both. WINSOON names a guide and two anti-jump pads. TSMST names an adjustable floor guide and does not name an anti-jump block. CCJH does not name a floor guide in the bullets. A missing line is not proof that every box is empty of that part. You still cannot order on a part the listing does not promise. Stars are listing data. WINSOON’s 4.7 from 6,140 reviews is the longest trail here, and it is still not a security test or a British Standard result. The two cheap WOLFBIRD files both show 4.6 from 721 reviews, and the written texts overlap, including notes about 10 ft and 3 m rails that are not these titles. Treat that as one shared sample. None of the eight listings prints PAS 24, BS EN 1527 or a fire rating. BS EN 1527 is the hardware standard for sliding door gear. It is not a sticker on these pages. Once your width, load and thickness already match, the best sliding barn door kit page names which file to open.

When this guide is the wrong product

Leave the set if the door is an external patio, a new-build entrance, or a labelled fire door. A barn rail does not lock a patio panel, and rehanging a fire door on this track drops the certificate that belonged to the tested doorset. A trade-counter kit is the honest next step when you want a named UK specification these Amazon files omit. SD Hardware lists the Henderson Rustic 100, a 2 m track, at about £213.13 including VAT, rated 100 kg, with soft close published at 80 kg rather than 100 kg. None of the eight Amazon bullets states a damper. If the leaf is wider than every maximum, or heavier than every printed load, go back to the opening and to a product whose own page prints the numbers you measured.

Common questions

Does the kit include the door?
No. The kept amazon.co.uk listings sell the rail and the hangers. The door is a separate timber leaf, either the one you are taking off its hinges or one you buy elsewhere. Budget for that leaf before you compare about £28.99 with about £59.99. A blank box description is not a hidden door.
How wide a leaf will a 5 ft, 5.5 ft or 6 ft rail accept?
Read the listing’s own maximum, not the rail length alone. In this set the 152 cm kit stops at 76 cm, the 167 cm kit at 83.5 cm, and the 183 cm kits at about 91.5–92 cm where they print a width. The 200 cm WOLFBIRD prints 100 cm. Signstek’s 183 cm file does not print a width, so the rail length alone is not a door cap.
What if the listing prints no kilogram rating?
Leave the load blank rather than copying 150 kg from a different WOLFBIRD page. The about £28.99 and about £29.99 black kits do not state a load. If you are hanging solid oak, or you cannot weigh the leaf, choose a listing that prints a figure you can stay inside. A blank field stays blank.
What thickness do these kits state?
TSMST and the 152 cm WOLFBIRD state 30–50 mm. WINSOON states 35–45 mm. CCJH states 35–40 mm. Three files state nothing. Measure the door edge before you order, because a blank thickness is not a promise that any internal door will clamp. A 44 mm edge against a 35–40 mm band is a return.
Is a floor guide a bottom track?
No. It keeps the leaf from swinging away from the wall, and Häfele says it carries no weight. These kits have no threshold rail. The door still needs a clear floor along the whole travel, including carpet and any hump at the opening. The weight stays on the rail and on the wall fixings.
Should I trust the star rating if two ASINs share it?
Use it as one pool. The 183 cm and 200 cm black WOLFBIRD files show the same 4.6 from 721, and the written sample overlaps, including other rail lengths. Judge each title by the door width it prints, not by counting the stars twice. Stars are listing data, not a British Standard result.
When is a trade-counter kit the honest next step?
When you need a printed soft close, a one-piece track around 2 m, or a load and thickness the Amazon file leaves blank. Henderson Rustic 100 at about £213 including VAT is that contrast, and it is not in this Amazon table. A patio or a fire door is a different product again. Soft close on that range is published at 80 kg.
