Electronic surveillance comparisons for UK homes

Updated: October 2026Hub page

Electronic surveillance here is the kit around a UK front door, a drive, a flat block or a room. That includes cameras and doorbells, door locks and door-entry systems, alarms, motion and presence sensors, and trackers for keys or a child.

Each card is one comparison of amazon.co.uk listings. It says what that product is for, how it is powered, and what the carton or the plan includes. Shelf prices and makers stay on the comparison. None of these pages is a laboratory test.

Three guides for a UK home: what changes when a camera films past your boundary, how long to keep footage, and what a security camera without a subscription covers on the listing.

Common questions about electronic surveillance

Did you laboratory-test these products?
The comparisons read amazon.co.uk listings and public UK sources. The score on a page is the captured star rating multiplied by 20. A listing with no Customer Reviews line scores 0. We did not run a laboratory test, and a star average is not a British test. Prices are the captured shelf prices in GBP.
Can I point a home camera at the street?
The Information Commissioner's Office says UK data protection law generally does not apply if you only film your own property. It does apply if the picture includes a neighbour, the pavement or a communal area. You then need a reason, a limited view, a sign, secure storage, regular deletion, and a reply if someone asks for a copy. The same guidance covers smart doorbells.
Will a smart door lock meet a UK home insurance policy?
None of the eleven smart door lock listings prints BS 3621 or TS 007. Allianz says most insurers still want a traditional BS 3621 lock alongside a smart lock. The electronic door lock comparison has the same gap: none of those twelve listings states BS 3621, BS 8621, TS 007 or Secured by Design. Ask the insurer before you remove a lock the policy names.
Is a wireless doorbell the same as a video doorbell?
No. A wireless doorbell on these pages is a radio chime. It rings a receiver in the house and it does not show a picture. A Wi-Fi doorbell uses the home network and an app, and saved clips may sit on a card you buy or on a plan. A doorbell extender is a third job: it repeats a bell you already have.
Does a door-entry kit include the electric lock?
Often it does not. A kit for one house, two flats or a larger block can list monitors and an outdoor station while the release is a separate part. Check the included-components line, the voltage the release expects, and whether the cable is 2-wire or 4-wire before you order.
What is the difference between a presence sensor and a PIR?
A PIR watches for a change in heat, which is the usual detector on a floodlight, a path light or a plug-in socket. A presence detector is meant to notice someone who is sitting still, often with a radar frequency named on the listing. They are not the same part for a desk or a hall that should stay lit while you are still.
Will a dummy camera record video?
No. A dummy camera is a housing that looks like CCTV. It does not store clips, and it does not replace a camera that records. If a real camera can see a neighbour, the pavement or a communal area, UK data protection guidance applies in the same way as for any other home camera.
Does every camera in this hub need a monthly plan?
No. Some listings describe a memory card you buy, or a recorder that comes in the kit. Others tie saved video to a plan after a trial. The comparison for that camera says which. A card is often not in the box. Live view and a stored archive are different things.
