Home alarm system with camera: what to check first

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are choosing a first kit for a UK flat or house. A home alarm system with camera arms and disarms, senses a door or a person, sounds a siren and includes a camera in the box. The five kits on the [alarm system with camera comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/alarm-system-with-camera) are two Ring packs, two SimpliSafe kits and an XNY host. Count the openings, the backup path and a year of the plan before you compare resolution. This page is from Peter F., editor for DIY & tools.

What has to be in the box

Ring M at £229.99 states two contacts, two motion detectors, an outdoor siren and a Ring Indoor Cam (2nd Gen). Ring XL at £329.99 uses the same hub with six contacts and three motion detectors. The 13-piece at £304.99 names glass break, a panic button and a 1080p SimpliCam on top of three entry sensors. The 7-piece at £184.99 does not itemise all seven parts. The XNY at £149.99 lists six door sensors, three PIRs and a 1080p pan/tilt camera. The Ring or SimpliSafe page is the brand choice after the box list is right.

Openings, then the picture

Glass break is a different sensor from a magnet on the frame. UK reviews say Ring sensors are Ring's own, so a third opening on Pack M is an extra Ring part. Which home each kit fits is on the best alarm system with camera page.

The path when Wi-Fi fails

A siren can still make a noise if the broadband dies. A phone alert cannot, unless another path is stated. Ring's bullets put cellular backup inside Assisted Monitoring at £8 a month. The plans page lists Solo at £4.99 and Multi at £7.99. Do not treat those as one fee. XNY can dial up to five number groups on a 2G, 3G or 4G SIM, not 5G, and not on 5 GHz Wi-Fi. That is a phone list you choose, not a named UK centre.

Price the year, not only the box

A year of SimpliSafe at £29.99 is about £360, more than the 7-piece box at £184.99. Ring Multi is £7.99 a month, about £96 a year, while the amazon bullets still say £8. Who is phoned is on the monitoring guide.

Pets, pads and the camera's view

UK reviews describe adhesive pads that let sensors fall. Keep the lens inside your own home, including a pan and tilt head. If a lease wants a grade or a certificate, use an NSI or SSAIB firm. None of these listings states PD 6662.

Common questions

How many door sensors do you actually need?
Count openings a person can use. Two contacts, as on the Ring M pack, cover a front door and a patio door. Six contacts, on the Ring XL and the XNY, suit several ground-floor doors. The 13-piece SimpliSafe names three entry sensors plus glass break. The 7-piece title mentions an entry sensor and does not give a count.
What still works if you refuse a monthly plan?
A keypad and a siren can still work as a local alarm. On these SimpliSafe listings, UK reviews say app arming, recorded clips and Alexa sit behind a paid plan. Ring's cellular backup is listed with the paid option, not as a free extra. XNY can use Wi-Fi without a monitoring centre, and the SIM dial-out still needs a SIM. Recorded SimpliSafe footage needs a paid plan. A refused plan is a real choice. It is not the same product as the monitored one.
Does the hub still signal if the broadband is unplugged?
Only if that listing states another path. The SimpliSafe 7-piece states 4G. Ring states cellular backup on the paid option. XNY states a 2G, 3G or 4G SIM if Wi-Fi drops. The 13-piece SimpliSafe listing does not state 4G, so do not infer it from the smaller kit. A siren beside the base can still sound. An alert on your phone cannot, once the router is dead and no backup is stated.
Is a pet claim on the box enough?
SimpliSafe states up to 27 kg on the listing. That is the manufacturer's wording, not a lab result, and Ring and XNY do not state a figure. A heavier dog can still trip the sensor. Home mode leaves motion sensors off while you are in, which is a setting, not a promise about the animal.
Should the camera see the street?
No. These kits are indoor cameras sold with an alarm, and the ICO treats filming beyond your boundary as your responsibility under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. Point the lens at your own hall or landing. A pan and tilt head, as on the XNY, needs the same limit, because you can swing it after installation. Outdoor coverage of a garden or a pavement is a different product and a different set of duties.
When is a DIY kit the wrong product because an insurer wants a grade?
When the policy, the lease or the broker asks for a grade, a certificate or a police unique reference number. BIBA treats a grade such as 2E as the usual note for many lower-risk audible homes, and a URN is how a receiving centre requests police. None of these five amazon.co.uk listings states PD 6662 or a URN. An NSI or SSAIB installer is the path for that paperwork. A self-fitted siren does not become graded because the app looks professional.
