How to install a wireless alarm without a wasted evening

Updated: 22 October 2026

The first night is when a contact falls off or a sensor never joins the hub. You are fitting a Ring or SimpliSafe kit, or checking whether the XNY is a fair afternoon. This is how to install a wireless alarm in the order the UK reviews support: power and account, pair beside the hub, then place, then test. The [alarm system with camera comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/alarm-system-with-camera) is the parts list. This page does not rank the kits. If a pad will not hold, screw the part. If the panel still will not join, stop. This page is from Peter F., editor for DIY & tools.

Power and account before any sticky pad

Power the hub on a decent 2.4 GHz signal before you peel a pad. SimpliSafe's fit article and the XNY listing both exclude 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and XNY is not a 5G SIM. Finish the hub in the app while the sensors are still in the tray, and pair the camera near the base. XNY's USB-C lead was described as about 500 mm, and UK texts describe a set-up that appeared in the app but would not finish. Contact the seller before you stick six sensors. Whether a backup path is stated is on the buying guide.

Contacts and the magnet gap

Name the main door and give it an entry and exit delay. Add sensors one at a time. Fit the magnet on the moving leaf and the sensor on the frame, and test shut and ajar before you commit to the pad. Gloss and dusty uPVC are where pads fail. A missing part is a different fault: two 13-piece orders in the UK texts arrived short.

Motion sensors, pets and Home mode

Place a motion sensor high in a corner, off heaters and a south-facing window. A sensor aimed at a boiler trips when the heating comes on. Put the keypad near the door you use, at least 10 feet, about 3 metres, from the base, so the exit delay matches the walk. Ring's range extender sits between the base and the far sensors.

Camera, siren and the first test

Aim the camera at your own hall, then pair it near the base before you move it. SimpliSafe reviewers found the indoor camera is mains powered. The neighbour rules are on the monitoring page. One XNY sounder lead is short, so the siren stays near the host unless you screw it. Before the first night away, confirm the entry delay, walk the motion sensor in Away mode, and trigger the siren once. One SimpliSafe base had no sound until an overnight update. Stop if parts are missing, or if the insurer wants an NSI or SSAIB certificate.

Common questions

Do you pair the sensor before you stick it?
Yes. Ring's guide says to add the sensor in the app before you mount it, one device at a time. Pair beside the hub so a failure is the device, not the wall. Stick it only after the app shows open and closed. XNY reviews describe the alarm visible in the app and the set-up never finished.
How close do the magnet and the contact have to be?
Ring's installation guide says no more than 2.5 cm, with a green flash when the magnet separates. Align them on the closed door, then test a small gap. A sensor that works in your hand and fails on the frame is usually height or distance, not the hub. Other brands in this set do not print that 2.5 cm figure, so use the gap in the manual that came in your box rather than copying Ring's number onto an XNY contact.
Where does the keypad go?
Near the door you use, so you can leave inside the exit delay. SimpliSafe's article also says at least 10 feet, about 3 metres, from the base. A keypad in a spare room means the delay and the walk do not match. Codes only help if each person can reach that keypad or the app.
Where does a motion sensor go if you have a dog?
High in a corner, away from heaters, and not at the dog's bed. On SimpliSafe, Home mode leaves motion sensors off while you are in, which is the practical answer for a pet in the evening. The listing's 27 kg claim and the fit article's note about dogs over 2 stone are different sources. Do not treat either as a lab result, and do not expect a pet weight on Ring or XNY, because those listings do not state one.
What do you do if the pad will not hold?
Screw the sensor, the keypad or the siren. SimpliSafe UK reviews describe pads failing in the first week, and reviewers asked for screws. Gloss, dust and a heavy sounder are the usual causes. A fresh pad on the same dusty spot fails again. If the part has no screw holes and the pad will not hold, that fitting is not finished, and a sensor on the floor is not protecting the door.
What do you check on the plug before you power the hub?
That it is a UK BS 1363 plug, with a fuse, and that the lead reaches a socket without strain. One Ring reviewer found European plugs in the box. XNY's USB-C lead was put at about 500 mm by a reviewer, so measure before you commit to a shelf. Do not power a two-pin plug by bending the socket. If the listing and the carton disagree, treat that as a fault under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
