Arlo doorbell wired or battery

Updated: 22 October 2026

You already have a doorbell push, and you want to know whether those two thin wires can feed a 2nd-generation Arlo or whether the battery is the safer plan. Wired, on AVD3001 and AVD4001, means a trickle charge from a doorbell transformer. It does not mean the battery comes out, and it does not mean you have built a mains CCTV camera. This page is the Arlo doorbell wired or battery choice: measure 8–24 V AC and at least 10 VA, or stay on the battery. The [Arlo doorbell comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/arlo-doorbell) is where the five shelf prices sit. If you cannot measure the transformer, you stop. What “wired” means on a 2nd-generation Arlo doorbell

The battery stays in the doorbell. Arlo’s hardwire article for the 2nd generation uses the existing low-voltage pair to trickle-charge that battery, not to delete it. A busy door can still run it down if the transformer is weak or the wires are not actually feeding the unit. Hardwiring does not unlock continuous recording. Arlo lists that add-on from £12.99 per camera per month and says it needs a mains-powered camera. Connecting 8–24 V AC does not turn the doorbell into that mains camera. Arlo’s hardwire steps assume you are replacing the old button. The wires at the door are the power feed. Only one listing in this set itemises a Chime V2 with a UK plug.

The voltage test before any wire touches the plate

AVD3001 and AVD4001 want 8–24 V AC and at least 10 VA. AVD1001 wants 16–24 V AC and is not in this set. Read the transformer label with the power isolated, or measure AC volts, not DC, on the low-voltage side. Do not probe 230 V mains to see if it is a doorbell. Turn the breaker off before the old button comes off. The old button must not ring once the circuit is dead. Either wire can go to either terminal. If you are not confident that breaker feeds this button, stop and call an electrician. The how to install an Arlo doorbell page owns the battery sequence up to the moment the app asks you to choose power.

When the battery on its own is the better plan

Stay on the battery if you have no transformer. A flat with a building entry phone, or a door that never had a bell, does not grow an 8–24 V supply because the Arlo listing says hardwired is possible. Select battery in the app, charge by USB, and take the doorbell off the plate with the release pin when the cell needs a top-up. Stay on the battery if you will not measure. “It worked for the old push” is not a voltage. The cost of guessing is a damaged doorbell or a shock. If you later add wires, you can, provided you leave the cable alone until it is proved.

Which listing in this set even offers both

B0CRVJ79LB at £84.00 and B0CRVPBRC8 at £67.00 both list battery and corded electric. The chime is on the £84.00 components line only. B0CRVN1RTX at £49.00 lists battery powered only. A UK review that prefers hardwiring is not the power field offering corded electric. B0H41CWMC5 says battery powered in the power field and wireless or hardwired in a highlight, and calls the battery non-removable. B0CZPGFP5L has no model number. Wires are not a cloud library. That split is on the Arlo doorbell subscription page. The transformer only feeds the battery.

Common questions

Does wiring the Arlo remove the battery?
No. On a 2nd-generation Arlo the existing doorbell pair trickle-charges the battery that stays inside. Hardwiring does not give you an empty shell or a mains camera. A review of a 2K unit still describes a sealed battery failing to hold a charge after about a year. Budget for that cell even if you connect wires.
What voltage do you need for AVD3001 and AVD4001?
8–24 V AC, and at least 10 VA. That is Arlo’s figure for every Arlo doorbell model number except AVD1001, which wants 16–24 V AC and is not in this set. Read the transformer label or measure AC volts on the low-voltage side with the circuit identified.
What if the transformer is only 8 V?
8 V AC is the bottom of Arlo’s stated range for AVD3001 and AVD4001, provided the transformer is also at least 10 VA. If the label says 8 V and the VA figure is missing or lower, do not connect it to see what happens.
Is a UK mains cable ever the right supply?
No. These doorbells are not powered from 230 V at the button. Mains feed a transformer, and the transformer feeds the button. If you cannot find that transformer, or the cable looks like a lighting circuit, stop and call an electrician.
Will a busy street door still last six months on battery?
Do not plan on it. “Up to 6 months” and “4–6 months depending on use” are listing lines. On the white HD page, reviewers say life is shorter unless the doorbell is hardwired. On the 2K page without a chime, one account is about a week per charge after about a year. A quiet door can do better.
Can the old mechanical chime stay?
Not as a promise. You are replacing the old button, and the wires become a trickle feed. The plug-in Arlo chime is a separate indoor unit. In this set only B0CRVJ79LB itemises a Chime V2 with a UK plug. The other pages leave you with phone alerts unless you add a chime yourself.
When do you stop and call an electrician?
When you cannot prove 8–24 V AC and 10 VA, when the breaker you switched might not be the right one, when the cable looks damaged, or when you might be holding 230 V. Also when the door is communal and you are not sure you may change the button.
