Outdoor security camera electrician: the 230 volt test

A 230 volt outdoor lamp-camera on a porch is mains work in the UK. A 5 volt plug-in is a different job. Read the listing before you call an electrician.
On this page

You have switched the porch light off, and the new camera is still in the box. The cable in the wall fed the lamp, and the listing said this model can take its place. An outdoor security camera electrician is who you call when that listing is a 230 volt connection and lighting work is not your trade. A 5 volt plug-in on a normal socket is a different job.
This page uses six ABUS listings from amazon.co.uk, priced on 15 October 2026. Products Compared did not lab-test any camera, and review text in those files is not a United Kingdom sample. Whether a lamp swap must be notified is left open on purpose.
In short
Call an electrician when the camera is 230 volts in place of an outdoor light. In this set that is the PPIC46520. A 5 or 12 volt camera on a BS 1363 socket you already have is a different job, and none of these six is solar.
The listing that says 230 volts
The ABUS PPIC46520, ASIN B0C6626ZL7, states 230 volts and 17 watts. The bullets say it can replace an outdoor light and claim up to 1,000 lumens. On 15 October 2026 the amazon.co.uk price was £239.82, and the weather line prints IP66. That code is the manufacturer's claim. We did not certify it.
Seventeen watts looks like a small LED lamp, so the swap gets underestimated. The work is isolating the circuit, proving the cable dead, and remaking the joint in the old back box. A cracked box or a short cable has already outgrown a bulb change. App2Cam Plus and a no-subscription line are about the app and the card. A fee-free app on a mains lamp is still a mains lamp. Compare the plug-in models on our ABUS security camera page. If the plate does not say 230 volts, this is the wrong product.
Plug-in cameras that are a different job
The other cameras stay off the lighting circuit if the voltage cell matches the plate. PPIC31020 is 5 volts and £96.47, and not water resistant. CASA30500 is 5 volts and £221.23, at 480p. EasyLook BasicSet PPDF17000 is £350.99, with a 12 volt camera and a monitor claim of about two hours. PPIC54520B was £148.66, prints IP66, and is a low-voltage plug-in, not a lamp.
A 5 or 12 volt camera uses a BS 1363 adaptor in a socket you already have. The adaptor is mains. The lead after it is low voltage. Do not fit a 13 amp plug, or a connector block, to the old lamp flex. Wireless on these listings is about the picture. EasyLook reviewers describe a private link to the monitor, and say you cannot watch the set away from home. A window lead is a short trial. A new outdoor socket, a damaged garden cable, or opening the consumer unit is an electrician's job unless that is already your trade. The outdoor security camera comparison includes battery models that never use the porch cable, from £11.89 to £69.99 in the same file.
The older lamp is not the same model
The PPIC36520, ASIN B07H7L825N, was £220.03 on 15 October 2026. The bullets say 1080p and up to 950 lumens. The table says outdoor, IP55 and 6 watts, and it states no voltage. The power-source cell says "hand-operated", which is junk in the table, not a hand-crank. A blank voltage cell is not 5 volts and not 230 volts. The model codes differ by one digit. IP55 and IP66 were not lab-tested here. Leave the light until the plate on the unit you were sent shows volts.
App2Cam Plus is named on the PPIC46520 only. If the plate, the paperwork and the amazon.co.uk table disagree, stop before anyone isolates a breaker. Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9, is the route back to the seller when the unit does not match the description. It does not make an unknown supply safe to connect.
What this page will not decide
Approved Document P on GOV.UK is England's electrical-safety document for dwellings, which is what people mean by Part P. We opened the page and did not extract a notifiable-work table, so this article will not say whether a like-for-like porch-light swap must be notified. If 230 volt outdoor lighting is not your trade, hire someone whose trade it is.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own building rules. An English Part P note is not a guide for a house in Cardiff, Glasgow or Belfast. Ask a local electrician or building control. A sound joint and a notification are related, and they are not the same decision.
The ICO home CCTV guide, read on 15 October 2026, covers fixed cameras and was under review after the Data (Use and Access) Act. Past your boundary it expects a clear reason, no more footage than you need, a sign as the example, and regular deletion. A copy request is usually due within one calendar month. The ICO says it will not usually remove a neighbour's camera. The Surveillance Camera Code was withdrawn on 17 February 2022. A listing voltage is not a survey of your consumer unit.
A solar camera is another comparison
None of the six ABUS cameras is solar. EasyLook's battery line matches the monitor's claim of about two hours. A panel in a photo does not turn 230 volts into a USB lead. Use the solar security camera comparison when there is no light and no socket. Solar avoids the electrician only while the lighting circuit stays untouched. A new spur is mains work again. A battery or solar camera replaces the porch lamp only if its own listing includes a flood lamp.
When you stop and call an electrician
Stop before the old lamp comes off if any of these are true.
- The listing or the rating plate says 230 volts and lighting work is not your trade.
- The sheath is split, the back box is crumbling, or you cannot see a sound earth.
- You do not already know how to prove the circuit dead, and buying a tester the same afternoon does not close that gap.
- You rent the house, or the wall is listed, and you do not yet have permission to change the fitting.
- The light serves a communal stair or a shop, so the circuit and the footage may not be yours to alter.
- You want the clips for an insurer or the police, and you have not decided how long they will be kept or who else will appear in them.
Plug a real 5 or 12 volt camera into a BS 1363 socket you already use, and keep the adaptor dry. A lead shut in a window is not a winter install. For a permanent outdoor lead, ask an electrician about that socket rather than opening the porch light to see how the old lamp was jointed.
We used the six ABUS amazon.co.uk files, the ICO home CCTV guide, the withdrawn surveillance-camera code, Consumer Rights Act 2015 section 9, and the Approved Document P page. There is no laboratory test and no visit to a house. Prices can move after 15 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. The PPIC46520 is on amazon.co.uk.
